SACCORD slams violent CBU students

Share

FLASHBACK: Armed police officers unbundling Copperbelt University students who were arrested after staging a protest in Kitwe

The Southern African Center for Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has condemned Copperbelt University (CBU) students for damaging vehicles and beating up some members of the public on Saturday evening after the institution experienced a power failure.

SACCORD Information Officer Obby Chibuluma said the violence by the CBU students was very unfortunate and should be condemned at all levels.

Mr. Chibuluma told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that the students should have used the right channel to air their grievances.

He added that it was unfair that they ended up damaging vehicles and beating up some innocent members of the public.

Mr. Chibuluma said the students should have instead acted like professionals as expected of them every time they were aggrieved.

He said it was surprising that the students did not learn from their past mistakes when they have engaged themselves in violent activities and got arrested by the Zambia Police Service (ZPS).

He said SACCORD would continue discouraging any form of violence across the country as violence was not a solution to any problem.

Mr. Chibuluma added that what people needed to realise and understand was that any form of violence endangered the lives of people in the country.

On Saturday evening CBU student damaged vehicles and beat up members of the public after the institution experienced a power failure and two students were arrested by University security officers and were detained at Riverside police post.

  1. Stone throwing future mothers, fathers, uncles, grandfathers, grandmothers, role models and leaders.

  2. I seriously don’t even know what to say about the future of black race as a whole. there is just no direction at all. go to london, paris new work or even south africa. it is our black youths who are violent, troublesome and dull.

  3. sad reading. i wonder how the students would feel if their own mothers or sisters were the ones being aasaulted?

  4. stupid *****s .leakage boys and girls. BRING THEM TO THE UNIVERSITY OF “SOCIETY” WERE I WENT.THEY WILL STOP THIS NONSENSE .

  5. # 1 Stop acting foolish, yourself you are an African living in the developed world. Is it not because of the education you have received in Zambia that you are there? So many Black Africans have made strides and advancement in all areas, go to U.S,Europe, Australia so many Africans are working in all sectors!

  6. Can MMD Chief Bootlicker tell me what makes these CBU i.d.i.o.t.s better than the ‘Kulima tower’ or ‘Matero University’ students?

  7. well 89% of managers/directors and highly paid individuals in Zambia and multinationals have these students working for them. or are graduates of these institutions themselves. We condemn such actions but why are we better than kulima tower call boys? maybe our accents and suits. and 4×4’s and all expense paid trips. not forgetting our ability to actually blog….

  8. I regret having smashed tax payers cars on great east road 12 years ago. The culture of beating members of the public is new. These bastards should be caged, tried for crimes against humanity.Maybe the Hague would be the right place.

  9. sad behavior indeed.was at unza for 5 yrs. i nevar stoned any car but enjoyed the services of footbridge constructed after a few cars were stoned, enjoyed meal allowance raised after some cars were stonned.wat does that make me? unza has over 7000 students. less than 100 go to the raodside to stone cars, tarnishing the name of over 6500 innocent(some self sponsored) students. I guess it the same even with CBU.God help the African child

  10. Viva Students’ consciento, we will not be cowed by your ***** comments. Speak to boma in the language it understands best i.e ichi viva.

  11. I youngsters feel are very educated by parading their ignorance in such a retrogressive manner. I can imagine how these students behave when their parents do not give them what they want;bash household goods. It is crap to beat innocent peace loving people because Zesco never performed. It is shameful standards are falling at a higher learning institution where we expect a dregree holder Presido to come from. My old school has gone to the ….s and I will think thrice before I employ a CBU graduate!!!!!!!!!

  12. How i wish the Zambia Army and Zambia Air-force can get involved in clearing these fullish Tax Consumers for nothing………….

  13. You know what! This student’s behaviour reminds me of one guy during my time at CBU. Th chap was naughty and used to smoke daga a lot. One day during the weekend when he went visitng his parents in Chimwnemwe township after some smokes, he was served a meal with his parents but before he could start eating , he kept quiet for while to the amazement of the parents and started say loudly, ” Bafikala balemona kwati ninkolwa” thinking it was happening in his minds without realising that he was actually talking.

  14. To all CBU students.
Be reminded that from now onwards we ll be moving with firearms and any nonsense you do to ordinary citizens will cost you lives. We will not wait for the police to come and waste time caging you. This warning should be taken extremely serious. You may look at life to be so cheap because either Government, your employer or your relative is paying for you.All you know is to eat ,study and go to the toilet. After all your first degree is not the most important in one’s life. Never make a mistake of attacking innocent pedestrians or motorist again! You may not even graduate as long as you continue thinking worse off than a grade seven chap.

  15. #15, I have a similar tale. Parents suspected the son of being a weed smoker so they tested him. The boy was unde pressure to hide e was a weed smoker. One day his father made him a cup of coffee and put salt instead of sugar. The boy drunk the coffee without complaining that there was no sugar in coffee but salt for fear of being called weed smoker. After he finished taking the coffee his father told him he smoked weed. Suprisingly he denied and told his father actually enjoyed the correct quantity of sugar his dad put in the coffee. I think something must be done to stop the CBU thuggery mentality.

  16. IMAGINE ONE OF THE CHAPS GETS A DEGREE AND FINDS A JOB TO MANAGE COMPANY RESOURCES AND OTHER HUMAN RESOURCES ? NO WONDER ZAMBIA-NAISATION BROUGHT DOWN THE ECONOMY TO ZERO.

  17. #18 – Many of the guys that were at CBU & UNZA damaging cars are now in managerial positions. Look at Joe Kalusa, UPND youth chairman, he was also at the forefront leading guys to jambo when he was in COBUSU. Its a tricky topic this one. As a student we think like animals, when we get to society we realise the responsibilities we have and act like intellectuals. If companies viewed our campus lifestyles b4 employment trust me 1/2 would not have been employed. Funsa na mau.le pa kitwe they will shimikila u nicely.

  18. @ghostrider…you hit the nail right on the head. the id..iot who said he would carry a gun is an i..diot. he will just end up commiting suicide because violence does not end violence. simply put, it will result in a NIG.GA MOMENT!!! he is just as foolish as those monks or students stoning cars

  19. This is sad, but it works especially with governments like the current MMD government. I was a once student like them. I never threw a stone but whenever they threw it worked for me too since I never rejected the benefits that followed, and so do most of you who just benefit from the actions of others.
This particular incidence is rather unfortunate. But please do not bring in racial overtones when discussing such topics. I dont know whether it makes you feel more civilised than the students. I feel you just expose a complex inside you, most likely inferiority complex, which you should rather deal with alone. Just attack the wrong one does and NOT THE RACE. During my visits or stay in other places, I’ve also met people from other races, including the so called civilised ( sorry to say…

  20. This is cadre mentality which is a learned behavior from UNIP to MMD and UPND. It’s a pothole which will be hard to remove. Can you imagine if these students graduate and go into politics, violence will continue and will be more intense.
