‘Current Mining tax regime, Malfunctioning’

Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) law maker has charged that the current mining tax regime is malfunctioning.

Mazabuka central Member Of Parliament, Garry Nkombo said only the windfall tax would bring sanity to the mining remittance of taxes.

Mr Nkombo said that revenue collection from the mining sector would continue to remain a stumbling block and a serious huddle on the part of government because the current tax regime is defective.

Mr Nkombo said that the windfall tax is a docile law until the mining companies start to rake in supper profits.

He said it is not useful for government to become diplomatic and favour more of the foreign and new mine owners at the expense of its own people.

Mr Nkombo said it is vital that government allows its people to benefit more when the companies are making profits by activating the windfall tax at whatever points the prices and profits are high.

He said with such a scenario t every stakeholder would benefit from the proceeds of the mining industry at the same time.

  1. Thanks to Lusaka times for reporting on UPND when they comment on national productive issues, not like the post who are sata’s candres who report on negative issues and the likes of dail mail & times for RB.

  2. Both of you above@1 & @2,Tiye & Wanzelu, You have misplaced your kanongobilities! Why for once cant we just praise or denounce any story based on our good judgment than bring in partisam & politics? Thats the reason we cant even reason when issues are tabled before us, let alone see what benefits are their in terms of underhand methods. Bana mibosha!

  3. Fred m’embe’s directives on the postnews is killing the PACT because of the reporting by the newspaper of supporting PF and decampaigning UPND. Its common knowledge for someone to know that these two parties want to work together hence we should support the PACT as one.

  4. UPND IS NOW ONLY HEARD ON QFM A SMALL LUSAKA RADIO STATION THEN COVERED BY LUSAKA TIMES. THE PR DEPT IN UPND NEED TO DO SOME SOUL SEARCHING. WHY HAS MMEMBE ISSUED INTRUCTIONS NOT TO VUVUZELA FOR UPND GUESS TO MAKE PF APPEALING AND ITS WORKING SO FAR

  5. indeed can someone from PF and UPND explain why fred membe is snubbing HH and upnd. isnt membe the vuvuzela for the pact. why do we only read about sata and pf not HH and upnd.

  6. I never thought the post will sink so low as to start deciding which destination zambians should follow. They cant just be reporting on sata and leave out the pact. Can someone really tell us what fred mmembe is up to.

  7. WHEN WE TELL YOU THAT MEMBE IS A SNAKE JUST LIKE SATA, YOU ACCUSE US OF BEING BAD AND SUPPORTERS OF MMD. IN FACT RIGHT NOW UPND GETS MORE COVERAGE IN DAILY MAIL AND TIMES. POST WANT TO DESTROY HH AND MAKE WAY FOR MAGANDE. EVEN SATA WILL SOON BE DUMPED AS SOON MAGANDE’S THIRD FORCE IS IN PLACE. WATCH THIS SPACE

  8. On “Mazabuka central Member Of Parliament, Garry Nkombo said only the windfall tax would bring sanity to the mining remittance of taxes” I am with the UPND MP and UPND Team on this one. I hope Magande will do the right thing since he is for the Windfall tax too.

    Be blest all.

  9. have u had time to look at the australian experience regarding windfall tax. Problem with zambians is that they only read newspapers and think they can comment on anything. Get enlightened gary

  10. #11 Well said. If a powerful country like Australia had to back track on this issue, what then for a country like Zambia?

  11. You cannot compare zambia to Australia, wake up guys thats a developed country. Zambia is one of the poorest countries in the world and we need all the money to develop our nation, as such the windfall tax introduced by Mwanawasa and Magande was the best alternative for us to gain something from our mines. At the moment profits are just being channeled to countries where these investors come from e.g China. If you have no idea about this windfall tax how it helped zambia during the time of Mwanawasa, do not comment based on propaganda. Maxwell Mwale is getting some cuts from these investors hence he abolished the windfall tax.
