Arcades Developments Managing Director Adam Lethbridge says the first phase of the expansion programme at Arcades shopping Mall will cost US$4 million.
Mr. Lethbridge says the works which are currently on-going will take about18 months to complete.
He explained that Arcades Management was still evaluating the cost of the second phase of the expansion programme which will be done during the same period.
He said Arcades is currently constructing more shops behind the mall in a bid to provide different services for its clientele.
Mr. Lethbridge was speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka yesterday.
Meanwhile, Mr. Lethbridge has described 2010 as a successful year for the mall.
But he noted that Arcades was now facing the challenge of mushrooming of shopping malls across the country which are offering similar services and have updated infrastructure.

IS mr lethbrige scottish?
Thanks
Yeah funny the people on ukzambians were saying arcades is development in Zambia when it’s just a place to fleece zambians of their money while deluding them with shiny things. Why are we as a country obsessed with trying to catch up with the west by looking rich while being broke rather than being wealthy. What benefit will arcades bring to a normal zambian ?
Rich country in resources but very poor.Where dose our money from copper? China!
THERE ARE ENOUGH WELL TO DO NORMAL ZAMBIANS IN LUSAKA WHO BENEFIT FROM THE MALLS. ALL ECONOMIES IN THE EUROPE AND THE USA ARE DRIVEN BY CONSUMER SPENDING SO WHAT ARE YOU SAYING SLUMDOG AND CAPTAIN. YOU HAVE NO UNDERSTANDING OF SIMPLE ECONOMICS OR COMMERCE WHICH YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE AT SECONDARY SCHOOL
Don’t get emotional by typing in caps lock as if we care about your feelings. How many zambian companies are there at arcades and better yet show us their end of year returns otherwise please shut up and get a grip. Consumer driven economies are based on benefitiing the consumer financially , how does arcades benefit a wannabe like you spending money on overpriced goods foreigners are selling. Consumer growth creates wealth through money being kept in a society maybe your brain stem was damaged by maramus but the money made from arcades leaves the country. Next time you see grown folks talking about something you don’t understand better take a pillow and make our eyelids go downwards young man
Mushota is the most irrelevant thing i’ve found amongst the intelligent bloggers. Pliz don’t just say something just bcoz u can afford to do so. Talk bcoz u have a point. Otherwise u are becoming increasingly irrelevant.
Arcades and Mandahill are stripmall not full size shopping malls. Ba nione ba nione won’t help out economy anymore than people who signed up for sub prime morgages when they were broke. Again it’s nice to have world standard movie theatres for those who can afford. If U cannot afford shopping at Arcades, keep shopping at city market hoping that Zed will be a medium income country soon.
Just because most Zambians can’t afford to fly out of or within the country, it doesn’t mean that we don’t need an improved Airport.
I think that the expansion of Arcades will create more employment for us. Besides, as far as i understand it, Arcades is a private entity and it’s got nothing to do with government money and it has nothing to do with where the copper money is going (That’s a question for Situmbeko Musokotwane)
If i decided to extend my house, I think that shouldn’t be anyone’s problem.
Mushota is gay
how many of our patriotic Zambians actually buy Zambian goods such as cooking oil, soap etc. if enough people buy Zambian and ask for Zambian then the malls will stock Zambian goods. at the end of the day we need better infrastructure and better shopping environments
telegraph reporting, as if its jus hear say. no proper details.
Great news. The Arcades expansion will provide jobs. This will also add to the growth of GDP through construction which is one of the important factors of Zambia’s GDP. This will also provide business premises for Zambians willing to open up businesses at the shopping mall. This is great news.
Don’t ponter Zambians in the diaspora. Zambians at home also want to enjoy nice things with their hard earned cash. Better they spend it in Zambia than in Dubai, Cape Town, Mauritius etc which is where they go anyway. Might as well bring those services in Lusaka where the business providing those services can pay tax. Why must Zambians in the diaspora be the only ones to enjoy nice things and deny those at home those luxuries in the pretense of “it is not development”. Give me a break.
#12 Those nice things were already there in abundance . I don’t know why you look down your nose to think arcades is bringing something zambians haven’t experienced yet. We already had cinema’s bars and lousy restaurants that sell chicken and chips.Since when is selling you overpriced chicken and chips, cinema’s and overpriced beer development and letting zambians experience what they never had? The issue here is foreign exploitation which doesn’t benefit the common zambian it’s nout about faux posh places for deluded people fawning development
@ #13 slumdog shalapungu
How is it exploitation? No one forces Zambians to go shop at Arcades. They make that decision by themselves. No one has pointed a gun at any Zambian to force them to shop at Arcades.
It is development in the sense that Arcades and the businesses operating on Arcades will be paying taxes and employing other Zambians. Other Zambians who didn’t have a job before. Having a job is a better alternative than having no job. Having foreign owned businesses operating in Lusaka paying taxes is better than having no businesses.
It is better Zambians spend their money at Arcades in Lusaka than spending it in Cape Town, Mauritius, Dubai..etc. Let those who can afford spend their money at Arcades if they want to. It is their money, not yours.
Slumdog you are really out of touch with zed. How embarrasing it was to see people failing to climb an escalalor at manda hill. Go there today you will see how people folk to have a fill of the escalator. How i wish we had more mandahills and arcades. They are really adding value to Lusaka. At least once in a while i can take my family for a meal at Mike’s kitchen. Whats wrong with that?
In order to have more meaningfull development we need to build more factories and other industries as China, Malasia and India have done. Where as building shopping malls is good and makes a city better looking, we are creating more jobs for the manufacturing economies. Our govt should be encouraging owners of goods being sold in the shops to be produced in Zambia. We sure should not be importing canned coke, milk, eggs, orange juice, fruits and veges from SA. It is shamefull.
