Government says it remains committed to improving infrastructure in higher learning institutions in the country.

Education Deputy Minister Borniface Kawimbe says it is government’s duty to look into the welfare of students.

He was speaking after a conducted tour of the newly constructed hostel at the University of Zambia Great East Road campus on Wednesday.

Dr. Kawimbe has expressed gratitude to the Canadian government and Barclays Bank for contributing towards the completion of the students hostels.

Meanwhile, UNZA Registrar, Alfred Ng’andu has assured students that the new hostels will be occupied this semester.

This is contrary to reports that students will not occupy the new hostels this semester because UNZA management had not finished paying the contractor.

And Zhang Jian whose company Huajiang Investments was responsible for constructing the new hostels, confirmed that all logistics have been put in place for students to occupy the new hostels.

  1. this is what government shud be doing. good work. better pour tax into infrastructure development than parastatals. good work

  2. Is Dr. Kawimbe in charge of higher education? if so this is good development as he has a passion for tertiary education. However, more hostels should be constructed and the old ones rehabilitated.

  3. this is definately good work and whoever has been part of it should be commended and more local cooperating partners to be encouraged to partner with the public highest learning institution in the land. these are some of the projects we cried for when we were student leaders then and our cries landed on deaf mmd(chiluba’s admn) gov that time. instead the little man concentrated on his failed third term bid on which he spent billions of kwacha, money which should have built students hostels like this. thanks to levy who approved such initiatives.

  4. Lusaka Times also! You mean you don’t have Reporters or Photographers on the ground to follow-up your stories with photographs? Zambian bloggers wake up and send us photos please!

  5. Kawimbe is money seeking unprincipled man who languished on his wife’s salary before going back to Zambia and kneeling all the way State House to seek any job (this is a person who wanted to be the President of Zambia!) and ba limulasa bu PS and promoted to Deputy to a very unqualified Minister! Dora- off course!

  6. In light of “Meanwhile, UNZA Registrar, Alfred Ng’andu has assured students that the new hostels will be occupied this semester.[..] This is contrary to reports that students will not occupy the new hostels this semester because UNZA management had not finished paying the contractor” it is not Alfred Ng’andu, it is actually Dr Alvert NG’ANDU, PhD. Also, the news attributed to Dr Alvert NG’ANDU is good for the panicking students who are struggling with accommodation arrangements after they have not been allowed to occupy their allocated rooms in the New Residences, and I hope the affected students will be allowed to be accommodated in those hostels next week onwards.

    Be blest all.

  7. Those are old hostels ijn pictures but iuts true new ones have been made, unfortunately not photographed here. Too much importing na lumpenizing pa unza.

  8. you people who blog, have you seen these hostles?? don’t just be alarmed when you see these headlines. at CBU and UNZA it has taken about 5 years to build two blocks of hostles (about 45 rooms each). How long it will take to build another two blocks. its all drama, these hostles have been comissioned, visited, reported in the media more than 5 times. i know for those of you who are not familiar with the happening back home you even celebrate when a so called hospital with less than 50 beds and no equipment is comissioned. there is so much politiking and no work

  9. they are busy showing the ruin-hostle in the picture which were built in 1964. why cant they show you the real pictures of the so called hostles? take every propaganda from government with a pinch of salt. these guys are jokers. i feel bad coz my friends and family members are not in a priveledged position as am and when i visit government hospitals you can cry! i remember taking a frien who was assulted to the hospital, we where there from midnight upto 3am ( this has happened more than once ondifferent occassion) and where not attended to. and you are busy showering praises on propaganda.

  10. #15 &#16. We know this is stupid politicking. They can have the mic now and say trash from morning to evening and assume this is sinking in the stupid and dull chibuku fools they have been praying on. the real Zambians don’t buy this cheap politics.
We want to hear MMD is no more and some one responsible, Very Zambian who cares deaply about the issues has taken over. Lets raise people and rescue our selves. Its us that can define our destine not a bunch of losers and selfish P.I.G.S

  11. It’s just 2 blocks of “Levels” as i saw them last week. Not any taller than the Oct levels. For those of you who haven’t been and due to no recent pics on this site, just imagine two more Oct size levels built new Oct! SureIy as the guyz are saying, it can’t take more than a year to construct those levels with a serious government. I cudn’t just believe the potholes in front of Oct and the same Levels, they’re talking about. You can’t avoid them bcoz they are all over! I think if those who rank universities went to rank unza, they would rank it as the university with the highest number of potholes in the world!

  12. Now ba UNZA please don’t vandalize those hostles and urinate anyhow, please, This is development we wanna hear about.

  13. Mwema absentee landlords mwatemwa ba mambala. These hostels are for UNZA student. Otherwise this is really good news and Iam delighted to see the Ruins in the picture, they too must be renovated.

  14. There are over 7,000 students without accommodation at UNZA. These additional hostels will only accommodate between 90 to 100 students, assuming two students will occupy one room. This shortage would have been addressed had Chiluba paid attention to this crisis. It is a shame that standards deteriorated during his 10 years reign . Thanks to LPM (MHSRIP) for initiating the process of constructing additional hostels.
