ECZ workers

Workers at the Electoral Commission of Zambia-ECZ- have called of their protests and resumed work.

This follows the resignation of Justice Florence Mumba as Chairperson of the Commission.

And workers representative Joseph Chilekwa has asked the Post Newspapers to stop misleading the public about the happenings at the commission.

Mr Chilekwa says the work stoppage was purely a labour matter and that no one was behind it.

On Thursday, Electoral Commission of Zambia-ECZ- Chairperson Justice Florence Mumba resigned from her position.

Justice Mumba’s resignation followed four days of ECZ workers’ protest against her leadership.

In resigning her position as Commission Chairperson, Justice Mumba said she has acted in the interest of maintaining harmony at ECZ House.

And President Rupiah Banda said he had reluctantly accepted the resignation of Justice Mumba as Chairperson of the ECZ.

In his letter to justice Mumba on Thursday acknowledging her resignation, president Banda thanked her for the work she did while at the electoral commission of Zambia.

The president specifically commended Justice Mumba for the manner in which she successfully superintended over the 2008 presidential election which came at short notice.

President Banda wished Justice Mumba well in her future endeavors.

This is according to a statement released to ZNBC News by the President’s Special Assistant for Press and Public relations Dickson Jere.

Meanwhile, the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) has said that it will soon determine the course of action to take once it concludes studying reports of alleged corruption at the Electoral Commission of Zambia.

  1. The monkey’s toilet govt has set a bad precedent in the manner they have handled this work stoppage issue at ECZ.

They should not be surprised if workers elsewhere apply the same tactics

  2. Let us move forwad now. At the end of it all there is a job to be done and a general election to to be held. However, I still feel the workers were indisciplined and they are fortunate to have been let off the hook.

  3. Why are ECZ workers sacred cows??
Zambia the only country where educated and respected people world-wide are considered foolish by the ignorant untrainable people like Gregory Chifire and the other masses of uneducated people. going to serve people back in Zambia makes one take it as a waste of time. brain drain will never end i can stand the injustice and nosense currently going on. viva diaspora and offering services to people who atleast respect credentials. Abash Lifwikelo and silly NGOs in zed

  4. Moving forward without sorting the mess in the past is not moving at all. Zambians are known for making blunders and then hide in the moving forward slogan just to hide the misdeeds. if we do not learn from situations such as these, we are bound to make mistakes and will never make progress

  5. Do not rejoice yet VOTER REGISTRATION in all centers at council offices wont start till we are paid allowances. If you want go round on monday no registration till we see our money.

  6. Judge Mumba is gallant she has been hounded out by the MMD government so as to put a spineless person who they can manipulate to have unfair advantage during the elections by rigging. The opposition should demand immediate dissolution of the entire ECZ so that we have an independent electoral commission headed by the 3 church motherbdies, the trade unions and civil society. There is no way someone writting an exam can appoint his on invigilator for his exam. This is the scenario that happens when the president appoints the chairman of the ECZ and the Chief injustice when the president is also an interested party. THE OPPOSITION ARE MISSING THE POINT THESE UNFAIR ELECTORAL RULES(inherited from zambias greatest thieves kafupi/vj ) will always favour the mmd. WAKE UP WE DONT WANT ANOTHER EGYPT

  7. Still we are warning the MMD thieves never to rigg elections if they want peace in Zambia. Let them learn from Tunisia and Egypt.

We are warning you MMD thieves.

  8. #2, TwoBlue says.

Were you sponsored there by the ZAMTROP slash fund? No wonder the careless support for MUMUDI!!!

    Shame on you.

what will prevent rigging this year? ECZ boss is appointed by the president, who will also be a candidate in the elections. in all fairness, and with the poverty Politics of Zed, he/she will be polite and kind enough to his boss by granting him victory. The only way riging could be stopped is by having an independet ECZ (not Alabee/kuuuunda controlled ECZ). So be assured that with all things considerd, mmd will emerge victorious, much to the amazement of the opposition. There is no system in Zed ( and Africa) which can guarantee fair play in presidential elections

  10. Electoral Commission of Zambia-ECZ workers MISREPRESANTATIVE Joseph Chilekwa, we as Zambians we are marking you, so that Private prosecutor Nchito and Task Force Chairman will prosecute you together with other cameleons like Lifwekelo and Mumba for obtaining our money by false pretense from the MMD corruption method.

You account and properties will be reposed by the GRZ and you will fully be investigated.

What you, Joseph Chilekwa should know is that, the Electoral Commission of Zambia-ECZ will still be investigated, audited and your stealing, fraud and corruption that would have been exposed under Justice Florence Mumba leadership auditing will still be exposed.

You have just delayed your crimes.

    Umulandu taubola.

  11. #11 Anti-Politics, There is now a new system in Zed ( and Africa as a whole) which can guarantee fair play in presidential elections, this is called the TUNISIA’S FORMULA!!!! No African dictators like red lips Kunda and the MMD will stand the TUNISIA’S FORMULA, they will just crumble in minutes.

  12. I feel sorry for Red lips Kunda, he is like his friend GBAGBO who as a lecture in France portrayed himself as an intellectual but turned into a worst dictor Africa has ever known, and wants to die in the presidential seat now.

Kunda is the one now misleading President Banda regarding the condemnation of GBAGBO’s dictatorship, because of Kunda Zambia has lost its CAMPUS direction on Ivory Coast’s issue.

What a shame, Kunda you have killed the anti corruption fight and now you killing DEMOCRACTIC institutions like ECZ!!!

Please, please USA and the European Union help us Zambians, place this Kunda on no Fly list, sanctions and freeze all his offshore accounts, because he is killing our hard earned Zambian democracy.

  13. They should not be paid for the days they did not work…RB had directed that teachers/ health workers who had gone on strike in 2009 lose their pay for the days they were on strike.

  14. I’m planning to fement a strike at Cabinet House / Office to force George Kunda to resign. A precedent has been done where the Govt, looked the other way when workers were protesting against Judge Mumba.

people like Liato failed to even comment nor condemn the strike, even Shikapwasha the fake reverand failed to utter a single word. I guess Dora was busy making L.o.v.e to some pot bellied old man somewhere…..

This MMD only talks where they think will get political capital out of it.

  15. ian lilato # 8,

You are drunk in Kachasu hence your utopia. Isn’t the same Florence that presided over the 2008 elections that ushered in RB? You insulted and accused her of facilitating your imaginary rigging. What has changed today suddenly to be called clean? This reminds us of how you were insulting late Mwanawasa upto his grave but today you claim he was a good leader. Under what constitutional clause would those partisan pharisees preside over the elections without legislative mandate?

  16. Most of the striking workers are somehow related to government officials. Danny Kalale and Chris Akkufuna have been employing most of their relatives and only in rare cases do they employ MMD induced or sourced workers. Their work stoppages were a wel calculated move by state machineries just to unsettle a wel dignified Judge who could not fall to the same corrupt tactics. Who does know what was happeing @ ECZ when sourcing Ballot papers some of which came in the night aboard a private chatered aircraft at the lusak international airport in 2008? To my amazement, these workers who are 90% plus MMD sympasisers and relatives of the permanent secretaries, Ministers and still others were girl friends to the HIV infected Danny Kalale. That was the major reason why they were prostesting.

  17. #19 Senior Citizen,

You are blind and deaf, can’t you remember that by the end of Mwanawasa’s term even the great opposition PF leader Sata had started supporting Mwanawasa’s anti corruption fight and believed in what he was doing? Even those in the diaspora started seeing the sincerity of his love for Zambians and Zambia’s development.
Unlike President Banda who is shielding corrupt elements and being misled by Red lips Kunda by making and repealing Anti Corruption laws to cover themselves. This is a respite for anarchy in Zambia in the near future.

Justice Mumba is a clean person and obviously Justice Mumba will still have critics like you, that’s normal.

Even in the Zambian military Mwanawasa gained support, apart from in the much corrupt police, the camelions DEC and…

  18. Rupiah must be ashamed. Why keep mum mon kalales issue. The bar stud things he owns our votes. Let him be paid the gratuity and then shut up. For the worker at ECZ, its Kalale alemilishamo and madam ale fikosha na mahafu
