Government to promote domestic tourism

Catherine Namugala

Government has reiterated its commitment to promoting domestic tourism through cultural exchanges.

Tourism and Natural Resources Minister Catherine Namugala says domestic tourism is a necessity for the country because it buffers the hospitality industry during off-seasons for international tourists.

Ms Namugala says this is why Government highly values the role museums play in interpreting the country’s heritage through their research, collections, preservation and exhibitions.

The Minister said this last evening in a speech read for her by Tourism Deputy Minister Moses Mwangala during the official launch of Imbusa Mu Kalale programme, cultural forum aimed at invoke traditional expressions especially among the youth.

ZANIS reports that the programme is an initiative of the Lusaka National Museum in collaboration with the Chalilubemba Cultural Institute.

She said Government in the Sixth National Development Plan has ensured that museums are highly engaged in the development of creative industries which involve the establishment of community museums.

Ms Namugala noted that the Imbusa Mu Kalale has a dimension of promoting local tourism because it provides a forum for cultural exchanges through acquisition, sharing and application of knowledge.

Speaking earlier, Lusaka National Museum Director George Mudenda stated that the museum will continue to foster synergies with other organisations such as the Chalilubemba Cultural institute in a bid to preserve the country’s heritage.

Mr Mudenda also noted that the essence of introducing public programmes like the Imbusa Mu Kalale is to diversify tourism products from wildlife to other forms such as cultural tourism.

At the same occasion, Chalilubemba Cultural Institute Director Emmanuel Chishimba said the programme has the potential to attract tourists and researchers into the country and thereby contributing to the growth of the tourism sector.

Mr Chishimba thanked Government for coming up with positive policies which has helped the tourism industry to thrive.

  1. Ms Namugala please note that many zambians are too poor to even afford domestic tourism. And for it to really take off it has to be exotic to arouse the interest of most zambians. The only sizeable segment of zambian pop to patronize museums will remain to be schools.Until this country develops a sizeable middle class then all talk of domestic tourism is just hot air.

  2. Right move. Domestic tourism gives the continuity and also has all the benefits that accrue to individuals for their growth, relaxation, knowledge and sheer getting away from routine.
    Worldwide they encourage local tourism.

  3. But Namugala nimba zoona….can u imagine amatanta fyo yamoneka…kutina namumyanga everywhere especiallyin between her legs. I can even advise her to be keeping pubic hair for some time so that she look more sexual.

  4. @
Enka Rasha, I like your posts on LT, but can I disagree on this one just a little. We need the promotion of local tourism irregardless of the middle class size in Zambia. Even charging 50 kwacha to the general public would be good just to let Zambians see who they are and give children other social activities before the send school lunch money on alcohol.

  5. Fellas above yes she is a beautiful woman even I can see that, but we need to be mindful of ladies rights and not be sexist. You can say namugala is a well educated woman, beautiful and of course with added extra booty.

  6. Why do they give the most akward ministerial positions to the lady MPs. Why can’t a women be minister of mines or foreign affairs.

  7. @13, Mwanawakwitu:

Edith Nawakwi was once Minister of Finance (if I am not mistaken). So qualified women do get important ministerial positions. But it has to be based on qualifications and abilities of someone, and nothing else, or so I would hope that’s what goes on in dishing out Ministerial jobs.

Come on people, this is not a P.ORNO SITE for you LUNIES to be spewing such sexual garbage. Grow up!!!!!

@Enka Rasha, I completely agree with you!!

  8. # 2 the woman looks fine.Do you want everybody to be the size of an elephant? Look at Dora.Is that beautiful? No.Now back to the issue, the museums in Zambia are a joke. The government could be a museum that could display our vast mineral wealth by showcasing minerals such as copper, emeralds and so on.Find the Broken Hill man and bring home.Where is he by the way? We have so much that we can show.Let’s be serious.

  9. Sure we need to create an environment conducive for Zambians to start enjoying their tourist attractions. I would like to see as many Zambians drive out for weekends to our national parks and come back to work on monday refreshed. Who said tourism is for foreigners only. We can do it. Good girl Catherine

  10. Political rhetoric…Develop a middle class before you start your talk of promoting domestic tourism Namugala

  11. Ladies and Gentlemen, let us be honest and live by the dictates of our conscience. Domestic tourism is a fine idea which Zambians must embrace whole-heartedly. Zambia has a rich diversity of cultural heritages compared to our surrounding countries in the region. For instance, Luapula has its “UMutomboko”; Northern Province has the “Ukusefya-Pangwena”; Western Province displays the “Kuomboka” ; Southern Province has the “Lwindi”; North-Westen Province flags the “Limbumbi-Lyamize”; and other cultural magnificen cultures in the rest of Zambia. Domestic tourism will enrich the appreciation of the nation’s cultures and thus consolidate the love for Zambia. Hon. Namugala is on the right path of nation-building. She must be commended for her noble idea.

  12. Foreign tourism offers immediate benefits than local tourism. The average Zambian cannot afford to take his family for a holiday. Also you will kill two birds with one stone if you target foreigners because Zambians can access the same facilities at a subsidized price. What we need are basic infrastructure to support tourism. Do not expect a tourist to use the bush or a pit-latrine as a toilet!

  13. What is prohibitive for local tourism to thrive are the rates in some of these lodges and hotels, they are too high for most zambians. In Malawi there is a vibrant local tourism industry because rates are affordable.

  14. Then Mr Hakainde said, ‘Yes, I will give you Kapita but then I will resign and when I resign UPND is gone. I am UPND; UPND is me. Even if you come with AK 47s, I will be the last Tonga standing here. I know I am going to stand; I know I am going to lose. But I will make sure Sata does not win.’
“That is how the meeting ended. So we left.

  15. Please Zambians, appreciate every effort that the Gov is making rather than talk about how sweet one is or pass silly jokes around an important issue that affects the general citizenary. Youths, please resist from such and support the Governments effort and work harder.

  16. Good afternoon

Why is it so difficult for some people to contribute without inclining to obscene, sexist or profane language? Like #12 Mwanawakwithu has said, every straight functioning male can see that the lady has physical attraction but that’s not all she has – she also has a cerebral mass, and that’s what matters more.

Back to the lecture at hand – promoting domestic tourism is definately a step in the right direction. We Zambians need to take more pride in our own heritage & culture and inspire our people, especially our youth to take interest in our culture. By managing our museums and cultural exchange programmes, we will be able to display a compelling portfolio of Zambian culture that will attract tourists from outside and within.

  17. Then Mr Hh said, ‘Yes, I will give you Kapita but then I will resign and when I resign UPND is gone. I am UPND; UPND is me. Even if you come with AK 47s, I will be the last Ton-ga standing here. I know I am going to stand; I know I am going to lose. But I will make sure Sata does not win.’
“That is how the meeting ended. So we left.

  18. #23 how is you comment or quote relevant to the issue at hand? Are you comfused? First read the story before you comment?

  19. its hard for us poor zambians to visit places like LUFUPA in the kafue national park and other lodges managed by the whites coze we are charged the same rates as the bazungu ( the last time i went there i had to pay Us$ 80 per nite. were can a civil servant like me get the money from? ( i hope no one will tell me to save because am already living beyond my income) :-?:-?:-?:-?

  20. Lip service-we have heard this before from the MMD and nothing comes out of it. To our people, going to Victoria Falls or Kafue National Park is still a luxury, only the very rich can afford, how sad indeed!.

Its mind bongling that even countries such as Zimbabwe whose inflations levels where in thousands are cheaper to tourists as compared to pa Zed.

  21. Kate. Go and get your weave fixed or something. Dont talk about things you have no intention of fulfilling. Forget you

  22. #21 What ever you want to achieve by propagating tribalistic tendencies, you are wasting your time, we know this tribal attacks only one sided, how about attacking your Sata … start with the langauage he uses to address Zambians?

  23. I am disappointed with people that use bad language especially refering to leaders. one day your mother, your auntie or even your sister will be in the same position, will you be able to send such insults or will you be happy to see other people use the same toxic unprintables on your mother, shame on all of you who use Lusaka Times for toxic unprintables. You government is trying to put things in place but what have you contributed yourself to make Zambia what it should be. From the Time I came into Zambia all i have seen is just negative response to even positive matters such as support for domestic tourism which is permanent anyway. Support your govt

  24. Lusaka times please please please make your posting more interesting to read and reliable by ensuring that you dont publish comments that have toxic unprintables (Insults). This way your post will be get the respect even from foreigners like myself. Your tourism products in Zambia are affordable. I visited Victoria falls in Livingstone and saw lots of locals especially over the weekends some coming as far as your northern province. I visited also Chisimba Falls in Kosama twon very beautiful. Keep it up Lusaka times but remove all comments with insults please its a shame on your country

  25. I had respect for this lady to run the ministry, I am sori she has failed. Always coming up with fun headlines, we hardly see adverts on Zambia here in the UK. Do the work and less talk.
