Lusaka City Council warns against building on illegal land

Share

Lusaka City Council Commandant Winfred Mwale has advised people building on illegally allocated land in some parts of Lusaka to stop before the long arm of the law catches up with them.

Mr. Mwale told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that the Taskforce on land and security officers from the Lusaka City Council and the Zambia Police Service would not relent in demolishing such structures in order to bring sanity in the capital city.

He said notices have already been issued to people who have obtained plots on land illegally acquired in some parts of Lusaka.

Mr. Mwale adding that a combined team of officers from Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Lands, Ministry of Local Government and Housing as well as officers from Lusaka City Council would move in any time to act.

He said the Libala operation conducted recently was a wakeup call to those who do not want to heed the advice from the local authority.

He said people should be able to comply with the laid down procedures in acquiring land to avoid making losses after their structures are brought down.

“We advise those people settled on illegally obtained land to halt their activities or else, they should not blame anyone when their structures are demolished. We have sent notices to those people involved to stop developing such structures,” Mr. Mwale said.

He said Government will not relent in this matter which he said has been a source of concern for the country for so many years.

He further noted that people should always follow the correct procedures when acquiring land from some people whom he said; others are just there to swindle unsuspecting innocent Zambians out of huge sums of money.

Mr. Mwale stated that many people have been victims of this scam where they lost resources due to failure to follow procedure when getting land in the country.

  1. The procedure for acquiring land in zed is just too cumbersome. You spend too much on forms, interviews and at the end you are denied land.

More often councils seek to make money out of a few plots available by selling more application forms that the plots. GRZ shoul also consider encouraging people to settle in places like mumbwa, Luangwa ect by taking development there. Mutati should have taken the multi facility economic zones to places other than lusaka and copperbelt to help spread(distribute settlement) of people like is now the case with Solwezi which was once shunned by people.

  2. Why cant the government build affordable housing for people and charge them a low rent.

As long as this land is just sitting there, people will continue to build.

  3. Can we ever run anything properly in zed? Properly run councils free of corruption in land allocation and free of mounds of garbage seems unattainable.Zambia amazes me that the simpler things like garbage management is a big flop yet we’re surprised we can’t manage more complex bussines like running mines or a national airline.

  4. Nubian Princess i agree with u.what the government needs to do is build houses for people to rent or find investors such as property developers to make units of houses thats how a country develops check around the world all developing countries are doing that.

  5. So ba LT you can’t tell us about the clash between PF and MMD. . . En not even post my updates. This is Bul$**t.

  6. You are all corrupt.

How about you stop the erecting of shabby looking buildings in the town center and those along great east road? How about you employ and enforce correct planning and building regulations so that people wishing to build in (especially) prominent areas have proper rules to adhere to? How about you actually do something that you actually paid for? How about you stop mobile telecommunication companies from plastering the city (and country) with dodgy billboards everywhere; why can’t there be designated areas for this? Our country is fast becoming and looking like these other places like (with respect) Lagos, Nigeria, Nairobi, Kenya, etc, where planning of the cities was forgotten.

Why don’t we take a leaf out of South Africa’s and European major Cities?

  7. THE WHOLE ZAMBIA IS CORRUPT, ITS NOT JUST FEW INDIVIDUALS, EVERYONE IS DAMN CORRUPT PERIOD, PLEASE DO NOT CRUCIFY ME! IF UR NOT CORRUPT AND READING THIS, BE THE FIRST ONE TO CAST A STONE ON ME
