DEPUTY Minister of Labour and Social Security Simon Kachimba yesterday rebuked a Chingola-based foreign investor for allowing his workers to share sleeping space with goats.
The workers sleep in a garage which the investor also uses to keep goats.
Mr Kachimba said when he inspected Wang-Kong Company Limited that it is inhuman for the firm to allow its workers to sleep in a garage that also houses goats.
“I am giving you up to Monday to move these people out of the garage. Give them money so that they can go and rent good houses in the townships,” Mr Kachimba said.
He said Government appreciates the contribution investors are making to economic growth, but it is important for them to respect human rights.
He also said it is unbelievable that the investor is paying his workers a monthly salary of less than K350,000.
The visibly annoyed Mr Kachimba urged management to move the workers from the garage and give them better salaries to secure alternative accommodation.
“Let us have respect for workers, without workers there can be no production. Government recognises the role workers play in national development. It is important for our partners, investors, to do the same by giving them good conditions of service,” Mr Kachimba said.
He said Government supports progressive investors who are adding value to the economy.

Mr Kachimba also toured the National Pensions Scheme Authority (NAPSA) housing complex in Kalulushi.
He called on Zambians to ignore disgruntled politicians who are criticising the developmental projects Government and its partners are undertaking.
Mr Kachimba said it is unfortunate that some people have politicised the developmental projects NAPSA is undertaking countrywide.
He said President Banda and his administration will not be derailed from implementing viable projects which are positively impacting on the lives of Zambians.
He is happy that the Kalulushi NAPSA housing project is progressing well, but advised the contractor, Yangts Jiang Enterprises, to provide workers with protective clothing.
He also advised the workers against stealing protective clothing from the company.

The first time I read the headline I knew that it had to be Chinese investors. I am glad that someone has come out and said something. These Mongolians are known to have the worst human rights record in the world and should be monitored very very closely. The new GRZ government should pass a law that all foreign investors must come with investment in Cash worth US$2m and equipment is to be imported worth US$2m minimum. So if 600 Chinese come into Zambia each one with US$2, Zambia will have US$1.2Bn in cash!! This money will then be used to rebuild our water and sanitation facilities in all our major population centres. Any foreign owned firm that ill-treats Zambians like the one above, the firm will be nationalized without compensation.

Let us be realistic. The Minister’s government pays its workers between K 280,000 -K 800,000(graduates), while a descent house is rented for K 1,500,000 and above. Isn’t this amount equavalent to what one should pay for occupying a garage with goats and pigs. The Minister’ govt. should first be seen to treat its workers with descency before they can expect investors to treat theirs better. The govt set a standard for K 280,000 housing allownce which is enough for sharing accommodation with goats. His Hon. is annoyed not because he feels for poor workers but because this has been exposed in an election year.

We know Zambia is a free market ghetto but foreign investors should be monitored closely because their objective is not to develop Zambia but to reap as much as they can. I am not the the biggest fan of PF leadership, particularly its President. But this is the one area I concide with their aspirations and fundamentally disagree with MMD. This story makes me sick to the core. Clearly neocolonialism is fully at play in Zambia. Parliament must quickly go back to the drawing board and commence repealing or reformation of employment laws. There is a breach of gvernment minimum wage for a start, which I believe stands at K450,000. If that is indeed the case, these investors must be visited by the law. But I am not so hopeful there is any law to protect the Zambian labour force, otherwise we would not have had shootings, persistent accidents, beatings at work and now mixing animals with humans. This minimum wage isssue was a hollow political rhetoric with no constitutional backing. Providing enabling environment doesnt merely imply luring investors into the country and let them do as they please. It goes beyond to include setting employment quarters on percentage of locals to top, middle and lower positions in these companies. Its too much of these Chinese Guys and time to ask those who do not respect the Zambian worker to flyoff with their capital is long over due. Its normal even here in China unskilled personnel sleep anywhere. What do you expect the chinese investor to do when those people were happy as long as the following day they were on payroll. How sad, I have just had people do 3 days work and I have paid them the equivalent of what the Chinaman is paying in a month, yet I feel I could pay better and have given these people the chance to work without interference and so far I hear they are doing a good job.
