United Party For National Development,UPND president Hakainde Hichilema says the 2011 tripartite elections will provide Zambians
with an opportunity to unite around a common purpose of national reconstruction.
Mr.Hichilema said the country’s problems need to be resolved by leaders of a future mentality as they are of the future and not the past.
Speaking on a special program on Radio Phoenix yesterday,Mr.Hichilema said the 2011 elections are not centered on personalities or ethnic boundaries but rather around a general purpose of alleviating poverty and growing the economy.
He vowed to embark on a 10% annual economic growth in his first five years of office through robust implementation of policies which are centered on citizenry empowerment through decent investment.
He said it is possible to reduce the country’s poverty and match it with economic growth by cutting on extravagant and unnecessary spending in order to channel the funds towards service delivery which will include a motivated public service.
“How do you have a poor country that has 66 ministers and their deputies each with at least three vehicles each worth K500 million, which totals
to K1.5 billion per minister.Multiplying that by 66 will give you a rough figure on how much extravagance and unnecessary spending there is in this government.That is the money once in power will be used to alleviate poverty and improve on service delivery because we will have a sizable cabinet”he explained.
Mr.Hichilema revealed that his government will ensure that it invests in the education of every child’s skill which will in turn be a necessary tool in national building through entrepreneurship thus lead to expansion in the labour force and subsequently increase on the national tax base.
He said this move will empower Zambians through structured investment opportunities for both local and foreign direct investment especially in areas of agriculture and construction.
“Look,the country has got so much potential.The UPND government will provide a structured investment environment for the benefit of our local population.We have so much land and water for agricultural purposes.All that is needed is to harness that potential and allow the local population access to finances that will in turn grow the economy,”Mr.Hichilema said.
The UPND leader said his government will also concentrate on providing subsidies towards production and not consumption in order to lower the cost of food and in turn lower the country’s inflation rate which unfortunately is currently not matching with trends.
He has since urged Zambians especially the youths and women to demand for regime change and usher in a new and vibrant leadership that will propel the country to economic recovery that will in turn result into job creation,expanded tax base,reduced inflation and economic empowerment through massive investment.

I must say that I have of late been impressed with the way HH has putting accross developmental issues. I was disgusted at one point when he joined Mr Sata in the game of insuits which suits him better than it did HH. Welcome back to civilisation Mr president. I dont know if HH made a calculated risk in leaving the PF, saying that I would have loved to see the ‘PACT’ take on the MMD.
As it is I find it hard to see how the PF alone will win because the the MMD might use the western and southern province as weapon aliming they won in those regions by certain margins which will just about cement their victory. Mr Sata as well should be releasing a statement explaining his regret on not meeting the LOZI chief’s and assuring them it wasnt something personal’ mand that he has the utmost repsect for them. As statement like that could see him look favourable not only in that province but to other LOZI elsewhere in the country who may have found his gesture insulting. WHo advises th man? The most effective pact in Zambia would be between MMD and UPND. I am not a member of either, and I am not even a citizen of Zambia, having been excluded by the 1996 constitution. So I give my advice for the benefit of my relatives who I care for in this country of my birth. MMD needs UPND for a makeover. The policies are similar and the intelects are matched. PF has no programme for the country. Sata will rule by decree. One minute he will squash taxes and the next minute he will bring them back. There will be no planning under PF. I am an independent. One must admit HH vision and articulate words are the kinds of speeches needed from all leaders. HH did not dash anyone’s hopes. UPND and PF were in the pact as equal partners. The failure of the pact should be as a result of a mutual agreement between pact partners. to allege that cabinet ministers and their deputies have three K500million vehicles each is a bit of exaggeration by hh. that aside, i have serious problems getting over hh’s decision to join a pact with pf. i cannot get over my conviction then and now that he has serious problems with his judgement, i cannot imagine an educated person who genuinely cares for this country joining hands with the chief architect of corruption just to get into power. probably needs more maturity before he can be trusted with state power, after all at present his economic objectives for this country are the same and already being implemented by mmd, e.g. his targetted economic growth rate of 10% and subsidising production not consumption are no different from what mmd wants to achieve.
and had the pact succeeded to get into power, what would have been the size of their cabinet to satisfy all the cadres from the two parties? i imagine that the pact cabinet would have been unwieldy like the kenyan unity cabinet. looks like some of the traits of the cobra, especially populist lies, have rubbed onto the young man. he needs more exposure in politics and governance, he can benefit from exposure in a lower position in mmd. at the moment he probably does not know what he is talking about. it is not so easy as he thinks to run government.
