Government will spend US$3 million on the improvement of infrastructure and student allowances at the University of Zambia (UNZA).

President Banda said yesterday that he has sourced the monies from the Ministry of Finance and National Planning to help improve library facilities and students’ welfare at the country’s highest institution of learning.

He made the announcement in Lusaka yesterday during the commissioning of rehabilitation works on selected Lusaka urban roads and launch of the Zesco deferred capital contribution scheme with installation of solar geysers.

Scores of UNZA students attended the event in Lusaka’s Mandevu Township.

Mr Banda said the MMD government will continue ensuring that the education sector is further improved as enshrined in the ruling party’s manifesto.

He said his administration wants to improve tertiary education and will ensure that more institutions are constructed.

“We promised to fight illiteracy and today you are witnessing construction of schools in our country. We, as a party and Government, have concentrated on education, our next target is to improve tertiary education,” President Banda said.

Meanwhile, Mandevu Constituency, currently in the hands of the opposition Patriotic Front (PF), yesterday turned into a euphoric MMD venue when President Banda surprised thousands of residents, taking a walk through the township.

The township came to a virtual standstill when Mr Banda walked through it.

President Banda arrived at the roadside market at the Independence Stadium in Mandevu around 14:30 and was immediately mobbed by throngs of residents and marketeers.

The security personnel had a tough time controlling the crowd as he humbly ambled towards the ground where his official assignment was to be.

  1. All these good things our govt is doing now at the time of elections, we’ll pay for them heavily after RB retains the presidency. Why can’t these pipo be honest?

  2. This vote buying gimmick is in futility. Lusaka and UNZA students are to enlightened to be hoodwinked by the eleventh hour developments.MMD cannot wrestle Lusaka and copperbelt from PF.
Very serious DON’T KUBEBA is at UNZA.
Those who are in Zambia please,MMD is desperate and confused,so get the money and incentives they are dishing out BUT IN THE BOOTH NI DON’T KUBEBA.

  3. Surely, where has the money come from to do all these projects at once now. Something fish here!!! Wina azalira here!!!

  4. RB, RB, RB all the way, I think this is even better than Sata 90 days economic miracles. Improve UNZA so that i can come and teach in a nice environment. Vote RB

  5. This is a departmenatl job, not RB’s. The annual budget allocation should take care of this and other jobs that need doing country-wide.

The way RB is going about these piecemeal projects tells you that the man doesn’t plan anything. He is a hapharzard person.

Electoral gimmick, using public rather than party funds.

  6. RB’s desperation is too dangerous! Even FTJ’s desperation over the Third Term issue is a mere practical joke! There is more to this desperation than what meets the eye. Lets hope the looting has n’t surpursed King Fred’s 10 year tenure in merely less than 3 years! See this same space after RB’s defeat in the upcoming general elections for details.

  7. This issue of sourcing money that is no in the budget is a clear source of corruption and debt accumulation. Why loans after another loan. This man amazes me for his lack of financial discipline. When he leaves office there will be loans amounting to $40billion more than Chiluba ‘s debts. Ruphia will be a mother of all corruptions. No wonder he does not like those who speak about the law visiting those wanting for their corruptions. If he Ruphia thinks George Kunda will be there for him he is mistaken. Ruphia should ask those who knows George and how he can change. A good remind is Late Mwanawasa, George was his Lieutenant in fighting corruption but abrogated his mission and changed the ACC Law to suit corruption acts that Ruphia wanted and asked to be minister of legal affairs.

  8. Zesco has been directed to accept instalment for electrification of houses in Mandevu Lusaka and solar Gisers at cheaper price. Does Ruphia gone bonkers just to direct every company to circum to his 11hr election driven spend x100000000000000 till the govt is bankrupt. He needs to realise that Zambians have made up their minds . they need change and change is inevitable at this time.

  9. What is $3million for UNZA. 35 students share the so called small hostels instead of the normal 10.By the way, Govt through Ministry of Education has already budgeted for allowances for students on bursary so what is this crap about allowances. What UNZA needs is probably 1 trillion for infrastructure rehabilitation!!
