President Rupiah Banda says late second Republican President Dr. Fredrick Chiluba will be remembered for laying the foundation towards the liberalization of the country’s economy.
Speaking during at a media briefing in Chipata, Mr. Banda says the foundation laid by the former president has led to the present economic growth Zambia is experiencing.
Mr. Banda says Dr. Chiluba will also be remembered for the pivotal role he played in pioneering the re-introduction of mult-iparty democracy in Zambia and the whole Africa.
He also says that during his tenure as president of the Zambia Congress of Trade Union, ZCTU the late Dr. Chiluba built a solid labour movement which extensively advocated for the rights of workers in Zambia and across the world.
And the president says he has constituted a ministerial committee comprising key cabinet ministers to oversee preparations of the funeral and burial arrangements.
The committee is being led by defense Minister Kalombo Mwansa.
Dr. Chiluba died in the early hours of today at his home in Lusaka’s Kabulonga area.
He was first president of the MMD, Movement for Multiparty Democracy, which he led from 1991 to 2002.

Funny, talking about nice things when one is dead and gone… You would have to tell him whilst he was alive….
Pafita ba Regina.. twalingana kuli good mililo…. lesa ni malyotola.. tepapa!!
Mr Banda, what do you mean by key cabinet ministers and how do you describe the rest?
NO more political dribbling.we will miss you.MHSRIP.
I WONDER IF THEY ARE WE GOING TO BURY CHILUBA AT EMBESSY PARK RIGHT NEXT TO THE GRAVE OF LATE MWANAWASA?
RB you will be losing this election because your dribbler has gone. Luapula will no long swing in your favour.
@Cutey
Are you taking over from that Scottish imbecile Mushota? Ask yourself what people are going to say about you once you leave this Earth. Do not forget your roots because normal human beings ill always respect the dead.Â
Sorry .. should readÂ
.. Do not forget your roots because normal human beings will always respect the dead.Â
KACHIGAMBA NO IT WILL NOT BE A GOOD IDEA TO BURY CHILUBA AT THE EMBESSY PARK BECAUSE CHILUBA DID NOT DIE IN OFFICE LIKE THE LATE MWANAWASA.
Whatever they decide regarding the funeral, that costly and unnecessary ferrying of the corpse around the country must not be repeated.
Ba Shaka at # I am a Zambian come what may ..my umbilical cord is buried traditionally in Zambia, but what this Kwindi did will never cease to upset me..I casted my first vote on this Kafupi only to destroy all my hopes and dreams.. selling all the houses .. need I need to go further???selling the mines elyo asabikapo no ubupupu?? sorry I have to say all this but I can’t help it.. I am in Diaspora for one reason .. Kafupi. I couldn’t stand the **** seeing my beautiful Luanshya gone to the dogs….
but u are a kwindi indeed!, if it makes u feel any beta, i know where they are burying him, i will send you a map so that you can go and tell him all about your grievances Kapoli
Meant Shaka @#8 in #12
For sure everyone was born to die.. but some people leave a bitter taste in the world.. this Kwindi was one of them..
Chiluba could be alive had he called “911”.
Lol.Just one of the reasons my friend says he “can not go to Zambia”.
NUMBER 6 I THINK CHILUBA SHOULD BE BURIED AT SEA OR IN RIVER ZAMBEZI JUST AS THE AMERICANS DID TO OSAMA AND LATE LEVYS MWANAWASAS SOUL WITH NOT REST IN PEACE IF CHILUBA IS BURIED AT EMBESSY PARK
RB now acknowledging FTJ ‘s positive role in 1991 when he was busy fighting against him as a UNIP ‘st ? I rest my case.
What’s he talking about? economic growth is in most parts of southern Africa. Take for instance Angola, It is more favourable to investors in terms of return. Chiluba will mostly be remembered for embezzling. He did good for the country but because  of the latter his name has been tarnished.
He brought it upon himself, Â Banda may have let him off but people don’t forget easily. May the lord have mercy on him.

I think we are giving too much credit to Chiluba. This man oversaw one of the greatest collapse of any nation on Earth. Our economy actually contracted during his entire presidency. As for multiparty democracy, he was a compromise candidate at the MMD convention, and that is how he became president of this nation. He did not single handedly introduce democracy to Zambia. And there are a lot of UNZA graduates and medical professionals who are glad to see the back of this man. He did not even bother to apologise for his misdeeds while in office. Sure, it is sad that he has passed, but to describe it as a great loss to the nation is a great exaggeration.
And no, I am not worried about what people will say when I am dead. I won’t be around to hear them, so don’t use that silly argument
KK Still strong has out lived ka kafupi. KK forever, KK Father of Zambians, KK worked hard to UNITE all Zambia keeping it as one nation, what thi thief do for Zambia, the so-called ka kafupi in high-heeled shoes. ZAMTROP account should buy him a baby coffin. kafupi thought he would cheat death – no way – you too had no power, carrying the Bible around was not a way to cleanse your sins – thief and murderer of many Zambians babies in the UTH, while he dressed in expensive suits. Many children died under ka kafupi
It is highly irresponsible of any Zambians to have any illusions that Chiluba was a good president.
This is the kind of mentality that has put Zambia where it is right now. What kind of a miserable f.o.o.l would have Chiluba as a hero? How emotionally depleted are you?
With a president counting Chiluba among his heroes, no wonder Zambia is going to the dogs.
Chiluba owes RuBish alot for having dribbled him at the renewal of MMD membership not along tym ago… Ba Ala Bee baliba dribbler ati “We shall use the International method to win this yr’s elections” (If I quote well)…. This what he meant, to leave you fend for yourself now cozzzz aaaa yamibipila bakamba naku Malawi nomba tukesa mukonka mukumikata,,, !!!!!

History says that Chiluba was not even one of the call founders of MMD but was conviniently adopted due to his popularity. How can you say he pioneered democracy when in the actual sense Zambians just entrusted him to be president where he horribly failed. Lets call a spade a spade. We should bury our former head of state with dignity but unfounded accolades are not welcome.
Chiluba did what most of you imbiciles( your forefathers inclusive) who are now throwing stones had no guts to do. He did his part when the time was right. Don’t sit behind your small computers and start championing the causes of economic development and political freedom. Kaunda would have thrown a number of you in the red brick to experience the swings they had over there. You were not there so just shut the f.u.c.k up.

MMD was movement of people from different walk’s of life who stood up end the one party state system.FTJ was just one of them.Student’s,the Church,Labour groups were most prominent in this fight.Remember Muhabi lungu addressing the masses at Pope square.
Unfortunately people did not know that FTJ was a political dribbler with the intent of hijacking a genuine cause. At the first MMD convention,he instigated the labeling of Arthur Wina and Edward Shamwana as Ex UNIP so that they could be left out of the running. If you don’t know this then you were also not there. So you must …………
it is a pity that all you sucker that are saying bad things about chiluba were young when the malawi man kaunda was in power.you did not see how cruel the old dude was to the people of zambia. he ****ed up the country and some people. he practically retarded people into believing he was an honest man
My dear, just from your street type of language, it is very evident that you were even younger. STUPID *****. SHUT UP!
Iwe Ch Shaka if you kill a robber that raped and killed your wife are you still going to have respect for him. A criminal is a crimanl dead or alive dont be a hyporite chimambala iwe. Ka Chiluba did good things and bad things but he did more bad things he caused me to run away from Zambia. now I will come back.
Zambians are very ungrateful chaps, It is this very KK who was killing citizens in the tunnels,Â
how he has now become an angel, i will neva know. FTJ had his wrongs and he was told in his face every day, kindly let him rest ba Kwindi
#27 Mwana iwe, where have you seen somebody praising a fellow competitor for political office. The ones that have obvious blemishes do fall out by the way side. It happens even here in the US. Its up to the aggrieved to deny the accusations. And this stuff about Wina and Shamwana is all hear say. Who heard Chiluba give those instructions? Don’t try to rob the man of his accomplishments. He played his part. Let him rest in peace!
I agree with you john hina #28. I believe a number of these bloggers when young or possibbly not yet born when ‘super’ ken was in power. Nobody could say anything negative about him (KK) without the shushushu getting rid of him/her. It had to take a few of us (Munali Sec Sch) students and those from UNZA to help force the the old gun out of power. Most of you never queued for mealie-meal, bread, sugar, cooking oil, transport to and from sch/work. Chiluba could have had his share of mistakes, but KK for those whose with short memories caused the death of a lot of zambians in hospitals, transport systems, mines etc
# 31
I attended the first convention in 1991.I was a 3rd BENG student at UNZA.FTJ particularly singled out Humphrey Mulemba and Arthur Wina. It’s not hearsay my bro.If i had a camera it would have been on youtube by now.
Yes we were there in the 80’s and 90’s.We stoned GRZ cars,we got tear gassed in the fight for Multi-party democracy.Did you attend any of the sunday MMD rallies at Pope square grounds in Lusaka? What part did you play?
Thou shall not speak ill of the dead
Chiluba (and HH) destroyed Luanshya!! I will never forgive these ubwendo imputi!! Now RB’s sons are doing the same….. Let have a ka ma war! I will go to Mporties and organise and army soon to sort this rubish MMD out!!

Well said.
However speaking ill of someone and stating the truth are two very different things
The mood in all provinces is that of “RB is compassionate and Sata is ruthless!” People are sad that FTJ has died regardless of his woes. Death is not something to rejoice over and dead people have no case to answer. Thanks to RB for not interfereing with the courts and allowing the justice system to allow FTJ to die a free man. God blesses those with compassion and punishes those who seek revenge or rejoice over death.
Sata is on record recently telling radio listeners that he would jail FTJ with or without a heart condition. He said he would assure all his leutenants were jailed too and the keys thrown away. He deliberately forgot how he, himself, was pardoned by FTJ for corrupt practices in 1993 which led to the resignation of Levy Mwanawasa (MHSRIP) as Vice President
.
And to top it off, FTJ campaigned for Sata in 2006 thus using his popularity to win votes for PF. Because of this, PF took Luapula by landslide. Luapulans wanted their “son of the soil” to be left alone in retirement. It took RB to give the people what they wanted. Now Sata comes up with gay rights, lock up FTJ campaigns and refusal to reconcile with his rebel MP’s. Sata has literally decampaigned himself. Oh what a loss!
# 37 Honest Zambian
Sata and PF can win the elections without luapula province. The key provinces are Western and North Western. These provinces always swing. They gave Mwanawasa his 2nd term and Rupiah’s first term.Which direction will they swing this year?
Independent, you are a dreamer.
Visit these provinces and see what people are saying. They dislike Sata and PF. This is why GBM has to ferry cadres in all his busses from Lusaka to hold big PF rallies there. Western province lies solely on the command of the Litunga. The Litunga has already endorsed RB. NWestern will not change much as the only viable contender to MMD there is UPND. PF has not decent Luvale, Kaonde, Chokwe or Lunda representation in order to make any meaningfull in roads. PF still remains a purely Bemba and predominantly uneducated leadered party.
What made Sata get close to RB and Levy in 2008 and 2006 was the ratio. In Luapula, Urban Lusaka and Urban Copperbelt, Sata was polling 5 to 1.
On only 1 full province and three heavy populated urban towns, Sata polled close to what MMD polled from 5 full provinces and half on Northern and rural Lusaka & the Copperbelt. As seen from recent by-elections, PF is no longer polling 5 to 1 in its strongholds. The MMD has become a close contender with votes being shared 1 to 1.1 in Ndola, 1 to 1.16 in Northern and clear losses of 1 to 0.52 in Luapula ward elections.
Now tally the figures and PF gets no more than 12% of the total vote. Even if PF was to win seats in Western or NWestern, Sata will still not garner enough votes to go beyond 20%.
Furthermore, this whole homo thing is working badly against Sata. Then he got the Excmunicated Bishop to campaign for PF by introducing a secular state. His popularity is waning by the day.
Not to forget that people in urban towns have realized that Sata does not understand what inflation is and so cabinet meetings will need to start from “mulenga and jelita” and “gateway to grade 8” before they can start to discuss complex economic implications with him. Sata’s meeting with Clinton (PhD Lawyer) lasted a paltry 10 mins and when he left the Americans laughed at how ignorant and shallow he was. Whereas her meeting with HH was more technical and thought provoking. Never-the-less, she told Sata that without a united opposition, PF would fail to unseat the MMD this year.
This should tell you something. We may not be able to see what her expert analysts can clearly see!
#39
levy beat Sata in 2006 largely on account of the 100,000+ vote gain in NW province.Sata only managed less than 1% of the total province vote.In 2008,both western and NW province gave massive sympathy votes to RB as levy’s successor.
RB won’t get those margins this time around. The Chiluba factor will hit RB hard in Lusaka,Central and Southern provinces where MMD would still manage up to 40% of the votes share.
You can call me a dreamer now but later this year you will remember my words.
To top it off, the Post, bloggers on the net, desperate politicians and excessive cadreism has overzealously convinced PF and Sata that they will win come rain or shine. Sata is over confident and as such he is unable to see how much ground he is losing everyday. Instead of consolidating the party, he has made it vulnerable to all sorts of outsiders, most of whose intentions are unknown. This is causing disharmony amongst his long time supporters and they are privately cutting deals with MMD to win their seats at all costs whilst assuring RB gets between 40 & 50% of the vote in their constituencies if they stood on a PF ticket. A convention would have sorted this out but Sata will not give the power to choose to the people in his party. A prominent PF MP told me that political prostitution
in PF is killing the party and Sata is better off losing than winning so that PF can evolve democratically after the 2011 elections. His own people dont want him to win. They fear his ruthless ways!
Independent,
Dont single out one province and make it your basis for winning in 9 provinces. Without landslides of 5 to 1, PF has no chance of getting what it got in 2006 and 2008. PF is not represented nationwide because like UPND, PF is dominated by one tribe only. Everybody knows this. In case you have not noticed, the 2008 election was almost identical to the 2006 election on a per polling station comparison. This time round RB was attacked from day 1 (swearing in day) and the opposition momentum grew stronger with the formation of the pact. Over the last 9 months the momentum has dropped and only the POST is trying to keep it alive. The death of the pact will yield a protest vote from many in Lusaka and the Copperbelt. You are clearly detached from the reality on the ground.
The outright attack on RB put fear in MMD and the Office of the President, so much that they went out of their way to fight a united opposition. They gave to the people exactly what the people wanted and what they promised they could deliver within 3 years. MMD panicked and braced itself for a united opposition in 2011. Their target is 70% of the vote as this would assure the opposition was crushed. RB strengthened his rural ties at community level making sure that he cemented an unbreakable relationship with the people on the ground. All this in anticipation of a united opposition only to be faced with a fragmented one. The pact made RB work hard and now its demise is giving RB a 2nd term on a silver plate. Just watch as the news unfolds over the next few weeks leading to the 29th of Sep.
Zambians are compassionate people!
The death of FTJ is a time of mourning for our people. By dying he has been cleared of the courts on earth and now he faces the lord almighty. This is what we Zambians trust and have full faith in. This is why we do not rejoice over death no matter how bad a person might have been. RB risked his job by allowed FTJ to die an innocent man on earth and this is an honourable feat. Obama has done the same for Bush as he has not dragged him to the hague for all the deaths he caused loking for WMD’s that did not exist. Bush will be given a state funeral and he will die innocent on this earth. This is what the whites do for themselves and we fail to do for ourselves. God clearly chose RB to bury Levy and FTJ and to restore unity and forgiveness to our people.
my! whats with the postings? i thought this was about ftj’s untimely death. mhsrip, and to all you hater’s he was our president for 10 whole years. yes 10 years and no one will ever erase that. like any other human being and politician in particular, he had his own short comings ( pun intended ), but i would say these were NOT extreme
Ba Honest Zambian. Tell your boss RB that you are highly delusional people. Anyhow, time will tell. Lets meet here in 12 months and we shall what you analysis will be then. For now take some Zoloft.
@ cutey,
at least ba regina balitombeshako na mano balikwatako ne fikulwa tabakachulepo, nomba imwe na nomba baminyengela pali tofee sweet.
A silly white man once said “if you want to hide something from a black man, put it in a book.” Nubian Princess, you are living testimony that this is true! You have not read anything and yet you think you know it all. We are on the ground here. People are crying for FTJ and RB is being praised for his acquital. FTJ’s untimely death has only made RB be recognized as a compassionate leader and Sata a desperate ruthless one.
Zambians dont like death. We are compassionate. We are not hard hearted or vengefull. We are forgiving and peacefull.
We will not allow ourselves to discard our culture and start insulting the dead. We will leave the sins of the dead to God to deal with.
George Washington killed many of his opponents in cold blood but he still stands a hero to America.
Those who are happy that FTJ is dead are living testimony that the Devil is alive in them. Only he who is free of sin should rejoice the death of a sinner. Most pundits here are natural born kabwalala’s. They started by stealing from their daddy’s pockets.
Sata will lose this years elections because of this very behavior. God will not let Sata rule because he was pardonned by FTJ after committing grand corruption in 1993. Levy even resigned because FTJ pardonned Sata. Today, like Judas, Sata betrays he who spared him.
Funny how Americans would not behave in this way if George Bush was to die. We Africans are surely primitive!
Ala Sata can never b the President & he will never b, his language can just tell nalesa alamona you guyz ur better than him he z the aspiring comedian in this yr elections let him go to one comedy show & compete
Yes #1 if this fool only pumped 5% of what he stole,Luanshya could be different today.
#51 I’m sure that you felt safe when Osama was killed. Most us here today feel like its victory against the enemy who put a heavy york on his own people.I cant help it but I feel liberated.
People have short memories they have forgoten all those queues to get sugar,to get mealmeal and to get anything just becoz the man was hated to the bone by the post doesnt mean that he did nothing.we will see how sata will get the luapula vote
bembas are the worst animals we have in this nation, they always want to accuse others. today they’re blaming RB for killing FTJ, the economy that was raped by FTJ, Sata and Katele has been heaped on RB. the worst tribalist in this country is bemba especially here in the copperbelt. no beating about the bushn sata with his appeal threats has taken FTJ to his early grave, this is not new they did it to Mwanawasa. am bemba and i know my tribe well.
Has somebody noticed that Sata is exceptionally quiet. I have not seen the Post yet today but I have read the electronic one but the King Snake is not covered. Apart from resurfacing when Hilary was about to leave i dont remember him being covered by his image builders – the Post or any media for that matter. Has he taken a sabbatical leave from the media and politics.
The chap should be burried with handcuffs and ballcuffs !
I like Honest Zambian’s analysis. It is easy to see and agree with his facts.
#60. You are a Joker. How do you think like that.
61 Puchukwe###########YOU ARE CORRECT. THE MAN IS REALLY ON THE GROUND AND HIS ANALYSES MAKE A LOT OF SENCE TO EVEN AN AVERAGE PERSON.
I think chiluba is not a the one to die, there are important people who have brought peace in the world has passed away. chiluba has died with the debts of the country. this may will never be the heroe of the zambians, he was good verbally and can convice people but for us abashibuka he cudn’t. if it were in time of J.J ROUSSEU ngabalimutanika. he was the thief!!!
I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death/ They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love. Chiluba was a great Man and will be sadly missed.Â
It is always good not to say bad things about the dead. Chiluba is gone. If he had done wrong to you this is the time to forgive him. Time to move on dont dwell on the past. All Zambian presidents have done good things and bad things. At this point lets only focus of the good things that Chiluba did.Â
@1 cute
ba cute ala nalimichindindasana.dont be like muwelewele mushota.its interesting to hear that u come from my town luanshya and will respect you for that.but resfrain from being insolent and arrogant.FTJ may have made mistates along the way,but we should remembered him as someone who championed democracy in zambia and liberalised the economy and we must be give him some respect and decent funeral.MHSRIP.he aslo didnt wished things could end so badly the way there are now.many thanks
We mourn a courageous icon of Democracy and reform that left the country of this path of prosperity. To His family, the Republican President RB and the ruling MMD, condolences the nation has lost again.
Your Excellency President FJT Chiluba, MYSRIP
Your Execellency President FJT Chiluba in your transition to a better world, we mourn you and commit your soul to the redemeer that liveth. You were a transformational courageous icon of Democracy and a reformist that that initiated landmark change. You have left the country on a path of prosperity and dignity. To your family, the Republican President RB and the ruling MMD, condolences the nation in mourning has lost again but you are the winner.
MYSRIP
MHSRIP. There is clearly a lot of bitterness among us. Sad. People, search your souls. The Zambian economy was already in dire stratis. Chiluba’s efforts in transforming it was undoubtedly necessary. The $6.5billion HIPC debt write off among the positives. The privatisation hurt many too. Certainly one major negative. There is no doubt though that the country is now in a better position because Chiluba lay the foundation. I understand the bitterness, but we should put it into context. The problem with Chiluba was the impunity of his troops, which he could not curb because he had his hand in the till himself. A real shame. But please let us show some respect for the dead. He was not a Nazi.
Mourning a thief is not my style. Thieves and thugs deserve to be hounded even in death. We saw how the Americans hounded Osama. You do not give peace to a crook. You hound him to the end of the earth. This one killed thousands of Zambians by his stealing ways. God has done us proud!
Ba#67, Ba Sharp shooter, thanks for your due respect to me, I promise you I will never ever again say any demeaning word to anyone on this blog… only’ one last thing itching ‘me at present is I want to see Regina dressed the way she used to do at other prominent Zambian funerals.. dressed like a Nigerian woman with heavy make-up on.. I don’t care if she can have all the riches on this earth, she will not take a single Ngwee to heaven or to her grave..kafupi has left all his riches like the other rich departed before him…L.T should show us Regina dressed like wise.. this woman is disrespectful in all senses.. Lesa ni malyotola..(I can see your flag is closer to home.. sometimes it comes up on mine when am using a different p.c.) forgive if I sound offensive in here..
You seem to be a bitter, unhappy, miserable and a jelous person possibly thick. You definately need prayers and deliverance.
Death is not a punishment as it happens to both good and evil. FTJ did commit atrocities that i believe history will judge him as a plunderer.Â
Every person has a good and bad side. The question is to whether FTJ good side outweighs the bad side. The stench of his ending was too much to bear so as to see his brilliant start. In any case, good bye FTJ.
i just want to ask? vera chiluba foundation? she she also used stolen money or what? the primary school teacher? has she also formed one foundation? people lets wake up. lets see if the primary school teacher shall continue donating even after state house? if not then i will conclude that they use tax payers money. while other foundations are still ticking even after plot 1. ie- mandela, cliton, and others.
1964- Independence-KK- Zambain economy same and compared to that of South Korea
1964-KK-Zambia
Kwacha stronger than the British pound
1991-KK – Zambian economy bankrupt, 7 billion USD debt
1990-KK-Kwacha useless
Please go to school! FTJ MYSRIP

Dont think Luapula is just full of Chiluba relatives no. Luapula is on record voting the PF even when Chiluba never wanted them
