The Zambia Police and several representatives from political parties have requested the government to consider regulating the sale of liquor such as Tujilijili (beer satchets) especially during this campaign period.

The stakeholders are concerned that the unregulated sale of Tujilijili is one of the recipes for violence.

During an interactive meeting for the police, political party representatives, the church and other stakeholders on Monday, the participants urged the government through the Ministry of local
Government to work closely with Zambia Police in curbing illegal
liquor trading and careless consumption of alcohol especially among the youths.

They observe that alcohol consumption among the youths is rife and are worried that if left unchecked, the overwhelming presence of Tujilijili could be a recipe for violence, before, during and after the elections.

And Deputy Commissioner of Police Dr Solomon Jere says there is therefore need to control the sale and consumption of all sorts of alcohol as one of the preventive measures against violence.

“I wish to call upon the Ministry of local Government and housing to strictly enforce laws on sale and consumption of alcohol as this has been identified as one of recipes for violence,” Dr Jere said.

Dr Jere says the Zambia Police is ready to work with all local authorities in the country to implement bye-laws on liquor trading and ensure that all bar owners comply with the law.

He appealed to members of the public to report all cases of
Political violence to Police on the toll free numbers, 9010 and 9011 to enable them resolve election conflicts expeditiously.

Dr Jere further says police have identified areas of possible outbreak of violence such Lusaka, and Copperbelt.

He says police are ready to quell any violence that may erupt in all parts of the country.

“We have identified areas of possible outbreak of violence in Lusaka, and Copperbelt but I want to say here that as Police we are ready to face any penetrators of such violence with full force,” Dr Jere warns.

And a clergyman, Pastor Baster Banda says the church will continue to pray for peace as the country heads for the tripartite elections next Tuesday.

The Meeting was called to brainstorm and find ways of preventing any violence before, during and after the elections.

  1. How can they be regulated when the guy in State House was feasting on them as Lunch just before 2006. Rupiah supports and is in Love with Tujilijili.

  2. Otherwise all deluded PF kaponya will be fast wipped out with tujili jili. They have become so useless and disengaged from life that all they do is drink tujili jili without business entrepreneur or vocational commitment in life. They believe Sata will be their santa stuffing public resources in their pockets. They more believe Sata like his late brother and mentor Dada Idi Amini will go on asset grabbing madness of all multi national corporations while investors into these business interest will just be watching and cheerling such borderline insanity.

  3. Outlaw it now!

  4. Let govt create jobs so that these youths have something meaningful in their lives instead of deflecting this issue of violence elsewhere.
Politicians (MMD) instigate violence taking advantage of the vulnerability of these unemployed youths, buy them cheap beer and set them upon the opposition party members.
The major blame for violence is not alcohol per se, but the MMD politicians that will stop at nothing to ensure that they retain power in the face of the unstoppable revolutionary wheels that have been set in motion.
No wonder they have no created jobs for the 20years they have been in power so that their stay in office could continue through intimidation and bloody elections. The so called unemployed kaponyas will dethrone the elite MMD on 20 Sept. 2011

  5. I have always wondered why the government has not acted on this one. Clearly, this is a public health and a safety issue. Those alcohol packs are sold everywhere and anyhow with impunity. The bottom line is that they should be banned, as regulation has simply failed.

  6. who is governing now. These chaps shud know what is good for the youths. regulating jilali will just kill young people who are the future of this nation. RBish think twic

  7. Too much tujili jili mu PF. See now with their deluded M’Membe at the PF Post tabloid they even have an imaginary Bradford University in Canada doing them some electoral research. And this ropinion poll has national wide predetermined ballot votes from a sample size of 300, 000 voters used. What a load of kitchen sink PF has generated into stooping to such sub-level! Even the Canadian High Commission is vindicating that PF is a deen of some circus Groupthink.

  8. They have to consider the repercussions and health issues associated with this drink. Put a heavy fine on anyone selling the drink and they will disappear from the market. The police force can make extra revenue by implementing the law before elections. In addition, it will lessen the risky and unruly behavior of youths in Zambia.

  9. Senior Citizen. PF is not in government and not responsible for its brewing and careless sale in the streets. Its your beloved MMD that has failed to put in place law to curb this unfortunate vice that is degenerating unemployed youths who have no jobs just because they want to be PF as you put it. You are sounding more desperate and delusional.

  10. Government should act now over this matter to save lives. I think the importation of ethanol should be banned and morealso the possession of the stills used in the brewing of hard spirits should be discouraged.
