ZESCO temporary withdraws application to hike Electricity tariffs

Share

ZESCO Head Office

ZESCO has withdrawn its application to hike electricity tariffs by 25 percent.

ZESCO Managing Director Cyprian Chitundu says the withdrawal has been necessitated by lack of a board at the Energy Regulation Board to approve the tariff.

Mr Chitundu however said ZESCO will go ahead and apply for 25 percent increment within the next two months.

He assured Zambians that the tariff increment will not affect the poor as those that consume one to 100 watts of power will not be affected.

Mr Chitundu was speaking in an interview with ZNBC’s Katwishi Bwalya in Siavonga this morning.

Mr Chitundu said ZESCO has been advised that the application can not be approved because there is no board to act on the application.

  1. 25% is just too much do 5% or reduce by 15% better, we are already paying too much, where we supply power to our neighbouring countries they pay very little and yet its our power here in zambia, when are we going to benefit from our own Govt companies or whatever you call them?

  2. do ZESCO workers pay for Electricity? My guess either subsidized and they don’t. Where ever they got non-making sense ideas.

  3. If this hike was preceded by improved and appreciable levels of service, it would make a lot of sense to consumers, but this all goes to pay for the inefficiency of Zesco management. It is a dead weight imposed on consumers arising from mismanagement and lack of strategic planning by this company.

  4. Zesco is without doubt the most unproductive and parasitic company, their plans are just to exploit customers and nothing else. This is so because they enjoy unrivaled monopoly.
If Zesco had competitors like here in the UK where there are many electricity suppliers they would have closed down years ago. Political appointments have done too much damage to Zesco.

  5. Why doesn’t Zesco first implement ERB’s last recommendations before they rush into this move.

Mr. Sikota Wina’s ERB recommended that Zesco stops subsidizing for its employees. Zesco employees thousands of staff countrywide, can you imagine the opportunity cost there??

Why solicit for funds when you have serious income leakages in your system???

  6. Not affect the poor who use less than 100W – so should we all switch to candlelight?

The fact is, an increase in the price of electricity will affect the price of everything – bread, mealie meal, cooking oil, etc., etc., etc. are all produced from machines that run on mains electricity. How dare Zesco pretend otherwise!

  7. ZESCO, IMPROVE THE SERVICE FIRST BEFORE YOU START STEALING FROM THE GENERAL PUBLIC. THE HEALTH WORKERS HAVEN’T EVEN STARTED GETTING THEIR NEW PAY AND YOU WANT START REPPPING(sp) THEM IN ADVANCE!!!

  8. WE HAVE SERIOUS PROBLEMS WITH ZESCO . HONESTLY HOW DO THEY JUSTIFY THE INCREASE??? THEY HAVE NO METERS TO GIVE CUSTOMERS, SO THAT THEY CAN JUSTIFY THEIR INCREMENT. I PAY 220,000PIN PER MONTH UN METERED WITH A LOT OF POWER CUTS. AND SOON I HAVE TO START PAYING 275,000PIN. PLEASE HELP US, WE DO UNDERSTAND IT’S NO MONEY IN THE POCKET.IT DOES NOT MEAN YOU KILL US.

  9. @ coronez, I couldn’t agree with U more, Zesco must first implement ERB’s recommendations and seal the current income leakages

  10. Zambian Engineers have failed to run ZESCO. They have no vision for company. All they dream of is driving around in their 4×4. How come there is load shedding in Zambia and yet we are exporting to Neigbours and income generated MMD used it for elections Campaigns.Yes ZESCO is a great Zambian company but there must be always short term, intermediate and long terms plans. Also most important no polical interference. How come under there were no black outs is because there was commitment

  11. Sounds like ZESCO konw that people now have more money in their pockets. So as people have more disposable income you might say they are justified to increase the tarriff especially that now they will be competing with Zamtel for the public purse.

This is the beuty of ‘owning’ companies as Zambians, we have to work hard for them.

  13. Time to privatise the company O atleast break it down into smaller chunks. The country will never develop with the likes of Zesco managing the energy needs of a growing economy. They should liberalise the market let copperbelt energy come in and become a major player.

  14. # 16, indeed you have concerns but cannot articulate them clearly. FYI, it was in fact during the time of KK that most of these institutions were heavily mismanaged. Zambia should have been the power house of southern Africa. The whole country is overwhelmed with hydropower potential. We have installed capacity 1600MW capacity (producing around 1200-1300MW), but the economic demand is far more than that. The current demand should be more than 1700MW. The country potential is far much more and remains untapped.
Let the engineers drive the 4X4 and have their beers. Probably that is the only incentives they have from ZESCO. This company is inefficient and abused by politics: it is a monopoly on the productions side, transmission, and distributing. No wonder Sisala is beating his wife

  15. Zesco employees including senior management should be paying for electricity at commercial rates, zesco should stop buying fleets of vehicles for management staff. The whole organisation should be restructured and audited.
charcoal consumption is up and you even find charcoal burners selling charcoal in kafue game park.
Why no commission of enquiry on zesco? We need to know where and how zesco revenue goes and is spent.
