Chief Mumena of the Kaonde speaking people in Solwezi district has called for the establishment of the eleventh province by dividing the Northwestern province into two.
The Traditional ruler has for this reason appealed to President Michael Sata to consider dividing the vast rather province to create another province.
Chief Mumena said the province has vast land appealed for the partition of the region into two if government’s decentralization program is to be visible and ensure that social services are taken closer to the people in rural areas.
He said this in Solwezi yesterday when provincial Minister Josephine Limata called on him at his palace.
Chief Mumena said government must also consider giving Mushindamo, Lumwana, Mumbezhi and Mapunga in Solwezi and Manyinga in kabompo a district status saying once this is achieved the partitioning of the province into two will be cardinal.
Government recently divided the Northern Province into two to make the country’s tenth province the Muchinga Province which also takes up the nothern part of Eastern Province.
The State has also declared a number of new districts among them Chilanga, Chirundu and Vubwi Districts, among others. The reason for this is for administrative reasons and to enhance development in the said areas.
Meanwhile Chief Mumena said the province need more proper infrastructure in the education, health and road network sectors that have been overstretched due to the continued growth of the mining activities.
Chief Mumena appealed to government to consider revive the Northwest railway project and give it urgent attention to decongest the Solwezi-Chingola road.

See what he has started with declaration of Muchinga Province? This is an expensive exercise that was not a priority. PF have should have concerned themselves with health, education, railways, roads, poverty alleviation programmes, job creation and the improvement of the general well being of our people. Government ought to re – cast the priorities, instead of creating a monster in form of new provinces and districts which will only gobble up the meagre resources !!
The absolute leader made history the other day by being the first president to be flown by chopper from the airport to state house!! (To my knowledge, none of our past presidents had achieved such an expensive short flight during their tenure of office.) In the meantime we had police leave their functions to provide security along the Great East Road, waiting for a leader who had chosen to fly!! He had us believe he was frugal when he took a mini bus to meet Mugabe in Livingstone. Such inconsistence!
The chief is spot on. Especially taking into consideration the projected population of that area in the foreseeable near future.

I think the Kaonde’s are in a hurry to develop. They know the ground rates will only benefit them alone and modernise backward Solwezi. This is cool though, he has a point. He wants to improve his chiefdom and become a very powerful Chief. way to Go not the way the Mpezeni behaves.

The Chief is right, these are the same reasons that were used to create Muchinga prov, so in all fairness, divide N/W prov and also build a University there, afterall they have the copper unlike others who have chilemba!

The chief is very right. What is good for the goose must also be good for the gander. All the big provinces must be divided into two. What was so special about Northern Province? As a matter of fact the idea of dividing provinces and creating new districts should have been well thought out not this off-the-cuff way it is being done.
Good one Chief Mumena what with the machinations in the background to cede Solwezi to Copperbelt Province. You have a machiavelian figure in State house who is busy scheming a tribal hegemony and the transfer of resources to his region. Northwestern Province now produces 55% of the copper mined in Zambia. It is high time that the province benefitted from her resources. Please demand for elected provincial govts headed by an elected Governor. And all mineral royalties to be paid to the provincial govt. The Central govt in Lusaka can get the corporate taxes. That is what real decentralization means not just the mere creation of new districts headed by appointees from Lusaka.

@Umwikala Chalo? You probably dont live in Lusaka on you dont live on the airport route. There is nothing more inconveniencing than the president travelling to or from the airport. You are basically stuck in the traffic for hours. So flying from the airport to state house is the best thing HE the president MCS can do. I support flying

I too agree with the chief. If Nothern Province can be divied into 2, why not Northwestern too. What criteria was used to create Muchinga Province. It looks like President Sata just wanted to get resources to Northen Province without anyone complaining. The Chief is right. Create more Provinces, more ministries and more jobs.

The chief is right let the government divide the province into 2 and devide Solwezi into 2 districts. Let Lumwana be a district and let Zambezi or Chavuma be a Headquarter so that development reachers that far end of the province rather than Solwezi which is at the begining of the province Kaondes and Lundas wake up time is gone ,no tribelism.The issue of solwezi being part of Coperbelt is irreteting that’s theft of resouces and selfishness.
