Ndola residents have called the Ndola City Council to find a lasting solution to the issue of street vending in the town centre.

ZANIS a reports that the residents have complained that the street vending which is rampant in the city centre is the reason for the increased cases of thefts through pick-pockets.

Mr Martin Mwewa complained that traders with second hand clothes are the reason why there is a lot of pick pocketing in town.

Mr Mwewa said most second hand clothes dealers have employed call boys who shout and call customers in a bid to attract more customers to their merchandise, said the same call boys are the ones that are stealing from unsuspecting customers.

“These people that sell salaula (second hand clothes) are a problem because they have employed kaponyas (call boys) to be singing and shouting for customers, now what happens is that when customers go there the same kaponyas steal phones, money and anything they can lay their hands on from the unsuspecting customers,” he said.

Mr Mwewa called has upon the Council to put up measures that would bring sanity to the business trading area.

“My appeal to the Council is to find a lasting solution to this problem, we don’t want to have temporal remedies, no street vendors in the city centre, they should go for good, there has to be sanity in the city period,” he said.

Another resident Sylvia Malambo said the increased street vending was the causes of most vices such as harassment of women whom call boys deem ‘in appropriately dressed.’

Mrs Malambo said the call boys that spend the whole day drinking small beer sachets (Tujilijili), shower a lot of insults on women regardless of age.

She said council should come up with stiffer penalties for people that are found vending.

  1. Useless president! Sometimes abit of education helps. Buying a degree on the street does not help at all. We are in for a trying period. Even Museveni and Mugabe are not as dull as what we have in Zambia

  2. Street vending has been legalised through a Presidential Decree that paraliszed the role of the Minister of Local Govt (Professor Luo). It is pathetic how venders have invaded the Zambia railway area on either side of the rail bridge from Kafue Roundabout. PEOPLE ARE BREAKING THE LAWS BECAUSE OF SATA’S RULE BY DECREE. His Ministers are both “mauless” and “toothless to preserve their ministerial positions. what a country!

  3. I told you Zambians, let Technocrats join MIYANDA and elect him president. Dambisa Moyo appointed minister of Finance on Merit……….Namugala minister of tourism ’cause she looks good. But no let’s vote for Kambwili and GBM you said. Zambia won’t be robbed this time like MMD did, it’s the dullness and insanity of a Kambwili and GBM that will crush our poor nation to dunderheadedness lol, I come against that in Jesus’s name by the way. Another trying learning period for mother Zambia.

  4. Thats a sad situation for a country like zambia with very little infrastructure and such insanity on the streets..Comrades i have not been in Zambia for a while nw and in the country i m..such thngs like vending have a designated place dats what a resiponsible gvt do..thoz chaps on the street are at a health risk nd if u chck properly they dont even have toilets around town..wat a country..

  6. Sometimes as a leader you have to make a decision which is unpopular but for the benefit of the country and its well meaning citizens. I liked Mwanawasa because he was such one leader. This is what results if you are a short sighted leader who just want to please people just there right and then. Commotions and pandamonium.

  7. The people are appealing to wrong people. they should appeal to Sata. Infact, they should match to sate house . He is the one who legalized vending at a time when councils had almost removed them from the streets. What a president. Let the people go and trade in front of State house right up to the state house steps. Maybe Sata will see sense and stop street vending.

  8. People people you said Lady Mushota should leave LT. She just did that but there you are calling her back. I bet a lot of people miss her very much. She is like the Army, when you are in it you curse it and when you are out of it you long for it. You see Mushota people do love you

  9. Let the council clean up the markets and bring law and order, in the Middle East we have SOUQs (MARKETS) for such things why would Zambian not emulate?? Zambians in the Diaspora let’s organize a summit in Zambia to advise our Ministers & Council as they behave like they never travel.
Clear the streets let our people sale from Markets??

  10. O ho, another place to protest is the VIP entrance at KK airport. Let us take street vendors there and send. Strong protest message to the Sata PF govt. Another place to target is Parliament house and Mulungushi international Conference Center. The next place is all the foreign embassies including the new American embassy. Maybe the Sata will then get the people’s message that we don’t want street vending.

  11. Lekeni Sata ateke! You people should give this PF govt chance to implement its manifesto. I trust bakateka with the programmes he has initiated so far. I fully support him of the issue of street vendors. Mr Sata is a caring father who knows that the only way to reduce employment now is to allow free trade for everyone whether rich or poor. There is also a decentralisation programme thru which districts will be reorganised so that services are brought closer to the poor. Those who are condemning Ministers are wrong. This is probably the best cabinet that Zambia has ever had since Independence. It is a cabinet appointed on the basis of a critical analysis of peoples brains so that we end up with a well balanced brainy cabinet. So bane stop your jealousy. Just leave the PF to deliver.

  12. In fact since the president allowed street vending even in towns where this had stopped street vending is now on the increase and we don’t have public toilets in our shopping areas so I don’t know how they manage all day long.Mr president do something for the good of both the public and the street venders.

  13. Sibutuane. Where do you live, no one encourages street vending, unless they are very dull, very bad policy , healthy hazard responsible for numerous deaths and unruly conditions on the street imagine UN chief getting robbbed if he went to theses streets ,embarrassment

  14. This one kwena our PF baitaya! All town centres on the CB look dirty. Why cant the Army and ZNS be used to construct markets @ a faster pace. The Choncholis can also help to build these markets. Ndola city centre around shoprite is an eye sore. Kwati ni ku Kabul after a bomb explosion.

  15. @ Ziman, I was in Ndola recently after a long time and indeed the area around shoprite is pathetic. I couldnt believe my eyes upon seeing the ugly walls of the sorrounding ruins. This is shameful to say the least.
