Community Development, Mother and Child Health Deputy Minister Jean Kapata

Southern Province recorded over one thousand nine hundred cases of Gender based violence last year. Choma District ranked the highest with 780 cases followed by Monze with 506. Livingstone was third with 490 cases.

Southern Province NGOCC Liaison Officer, Faith Simukoko says the cases of gender based violence are a reflection of low economic and social status of women in the country.

Ms Simukoko called for unity of purpose among women to fight the injustices against them.

She was speaking at celebrations to mark international women’s’ day at Livingstone Civic Centre on Thursday morning.

And Ministry of Community Development, Mother and Child Health Deputy Minister Jean Kapata called on women to unity and fight for the amendment of defilement to a non bailable offense.

Ms Kapata also urged women not to hide the cases of defilement happening in their homes.

She stressed the need for women not to withdraw cases of gender based violence against their spouses.

And Scores of people on Thursday morning turned up at Ndola Civic Center to commemorate this year’s International Women’s Day.

And officiating at the event, Justice Deputy Minister Alfrida Kansembe called for an end to all forms of injustice and discrimination against Women.

And Mrs Kansembe has urged the media to continue playing a strategic role in raising awareness against gender based violence.

She says the media has also a strong influence on motivating the girl child to aspire to greater heights.

  1. Fanny reporting, why cannot you show us how the other provinces faired . Is it a 1 or 20 percentage difference. This reporting looks as if GBV is only problematic in southern province. anyways, what do you expect when men there have more than two wives each, they dont care.

  2. I am a Tonga man married now for twenty-one years and I’ve never laid a finger or insulted my wife during the two decades of our marriage. NEVER. Am I included in these scaring figures? Yet, I leave next door to a Bemba couple and every other day, they are fighting. The wife in particular is always shouting at her husband even throwing his underpants onto the streets. I am also aware that this deputy minister in the picture is one of the most loud-mouthed women, a form of abuse. Is this the PF fighting UPND abusing gender? Let’s have a proper research.

    • Baba you know very well Tonga and Lozi men can be chauvinistic. One wonders whether it is the many cows paid as lobola.

  3. ..but the geographically ‘realigned’ bit was not number one. So for a grade 7 that pases as a reason to realign.

  4. A Tonga kukonda kumenya azimai and abusing small children and girls. Change for better this year please.

  5. I think this is more to do with secrecy, in some societies even if a woman is beaten, she will never disclose it to anyone for fear of divorce and women are taught Shipikisha by traditional councellors. This is not the case in southern province where if a man abuse the wife, the parents to the lady can come and take her away, although in some way some those spoiled girls by their fathers take advantage of this as a way of leaving the man if she is tired of the marriage. My tonga neighbour grabed his daughter from a marriage just because the man was abusive, and that was the end of the marriage. For a Tonga man never abuse his daughter, he will give you whatever you paid.

  6. Numbers or statistics dont lie,Bembas just talk, maybe too talkative but Tongas, less talk more action, too highly tempered, beating is not an issue.

  7. South south south south & the bulls. Awe mwandi mwalatupesha bakachema imwe! Change please, learn some good skills on how to keep a woman happy in marriage from a Bemba man.

  8. yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhh Tongas are naturally violence and bitter. This is why women are running away from them and go for Bemba and Ngoni men who are more mature and fun.Nowdays most women fear to get married to them coz of violence and boring. They love too much power as if they are gods also.U can see true bitterness of tonga men thru UPND.

  9. Hehe! Our tonga friends think that women are like Cattle, to be whacked with whips! One of my cousins is married to very handsome but violent Tonga man. It is such a shame. I have been married 26 yrs now and never once beaten my wife. I do not see why a man who claims to love his wife can beat her up. Any man beating His wife is worse than an animal.

  10. I know a girl who was always being beaten and she would withdraw her complaint to the Police when she was told that they were going to lock up her husband. I think the law about domestic violence should change. If someone reports that they have been physically abused by their spouse, then they should not be allowed to withdraw the case. Investigations should go forward and the issue taken up to the courts.

  11. It is myopic to suggest that Tongas are the ones doing this,SP has embraced all tribes than any other province in Zambia. It is likely that the immigrants are the ones causing this,i have never known Tongas to be violent but humble and hardworking people though shrewd if they want to.

  12. Reported number of cases is different from the amount of potential cases out there. Good that people are reporting it. We can do better. Avoid making it tribal as though gender based violence is unique to one area or ethnic community. Here in the UK many do not report.

  13. I am worried because more than half of the population is the province are members of my church.I need to push this matter to the church and see how many of my elders, deacons and others are involved so that we can take disciplinary action.

  14. But kwena ama reports yambi…..out of over 72 districts, only reports from two districts have been made public, how about the other parts of the country? objectivity is lacking in such reports. dont we deserve to know how other areas are fairing? we need a comprehensive report to make meaningful comments on this matter.

  15. Well, this report should be understood in a number of contexts. Tongas are disciplinarians and this does not go well with these gender/human rights nosense. i can imagine a house where the wife represents the opposition. Better if she is educated and is contributing to the household income, not someone who just stays at home. All men are generally good but these women like pushing their luck too far. my proposal is let us abolish our culture i.e. everything that stands for our culture such as payment of lobola, should be abolished so that we can adopt democracy, gender, human rights and homosexuality.
