SOUTH African High Commissioner to Zambia Moses Chikane yesterday announced in a interview with Zambia Daily Mail that South African government plans to build a modern city in Zambia to commemorate African National Congress Party (ANC)’s 100 years of existence which falls on April 27.
Mr Chikane said South Africa owes her freedom to Zambia and other countries on the continent but added that the contribution Zambia made towards the liberation of South Africa is insurmountable.
He said it is for the reason that his government has decided at her 100 years of existence to build a city to celebrate and remember the role Zambia played in South Africa.
“The role that Zambia played in South Africa’s liberation is huge and we want to honour her (Zambia) by building a city somewhere in the outskirts,” Mr Chikane said.
However, the South African envoy could not give specific details such as when and the cost of the project. He said if the Zambian government is agreeable, his country would prefer naming the city after Dr Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia’s first President fondly known as KK or the founding father of the nation.
“We have had our political emancipation but now we need our economic emancipation and to commemorate our freedom we want to do something big in Zambia such as building the city we have already mentioned,” Mr Chikane said, adding that “We can’t say how much that will cost just yet.”
[Zambia Daily Mail]
Excellent! Am actually humbled by your gratefulness!
You are a disgrace! If that city were to be built do you think you Zambians would live there and walk the streets with your heads high? The SAfricans WILL come and live there and will insult you that they built that city and stupid and naive as you sound you will be saying “INDE BWANA”! WAKE_UP!
A new airport as good as O.R Tambo airport will do us good but thanks mwisho
50 cent, great idea but with 4 planes????
kukonda vamahala!!!!! Zambia has resources to develop the country, problem there is no political will.
Impressive!!! You are welcome and thanks a trillion
Give them the whole of Kafue, or somewhere in the kapilingozi hills – we dont know how/have failed to build on mountaineous terrain
There is a lot of land in the rural areas of Zambia. And as Zambian, I thank you for appreciating what our founding father, Dr Kenneth David Kaunda and his colleagues did towards the liberation of South African. My appeal though is that, considering his age, if you could do it before our founding father Dr Kaunda goes to be with our heavenly father. We truly appreciate this benign gesture.
Amazing!!! It would be such a great honor for us as Zambians to see such a development. Glad that Zambia’s role in the liberation struggle is well recognized and appreciated. Well done KK. The name of the proposed city is also fitting
we should be ashamed of ourselves that the countries we help to liberate are doing far much better than us
Ah but that country always had a little more economic power than us regardless.
Ah, imwe a Phiri but poverty is in the brain, not in the pocket. Excuses, excuses, excuses
Now hold on a minute here you guys who submitted above me. Admittedly Zambia is an economic province of South Africa, but are we that much of a walk over? These guys want to come and not just build a kantemba, but an entire freakin city and your response is HALELUYA!! ?? !!
Maybe I am missing something here, but would the South Africans allow us the same kind of leyway on their turf?? Yes, we instinctively stepped up to fulfil our moral obligations during the freedom struggle, but I think we need to think this one out. Please don’t get me wrong, better the South Africans than the Chinese, but what will this arrangement do to our local industries? As long as we are protecting our local producers and manufacturers (if any), this could make us more economically dependant on them.
Mulenga and Jelita thanks for telling these dumb people the truth!
Mulenga and Jelita! you are so right! this is a venture which every thinking zambian should question before they accept
South Africa was the driving force that built a well-planned City of Lilongwe during the Kamuzu era. The brains behind this great idea have two potential sites to realise a good viable economic return: the city could be located (1) in Chipata which is centrally in juxtaposition to Lilongwe through a railway link via Mchinji and South Luangwa National Park as a tourist destination linked by a tarred Chipata-Mfuwe road and Mfuwe international airport.; or (2) they can work on developing Livingstone into a greater city which has the Victoria Falls as the flagship for tourism. The two proposed towns are potentially stable in terms of labour matters. These are just some of the ideas.
…and if they are serious on this one – they will select Livingstone – this is simply because South Africa makes more money out of the Victoria falls than we do – they have tourism packages that attract tourists to South Africa which include a one day or two detour to the Victoria falls. So it will be in their best interest to develop not only the falls areas but also the national park. Zambian Negotiators must be Zambian indeed to ensure that if this comes to pass it is for the greater good to Zambia. My suggestion would be to develop the Luapula water marks!
Was it a gift or a driving force?
And South Africa spreads its tentacles further into Zambia. Economic colonization as the people are blind sided to believe it is a thank-you gesture. Can bet my last dollar this “city” would be dominated by the Shoprites, PEPs, Edgars and Mr prices. Don’t mean to be skeptical but this is how I see it.
And you are right! The city would also be dsominated my South Africans – black and white alike- and Zambians would be begging on the corridors of the shops you ve listed! ZAMBIANS WAKE-UP! SA dont love you this much!
This is merely wishful thinking…how does one government build in another country; if they were to build the “town” who maintains it…Is it the RSA private sector? Does he know how much a City costs to build in municipal, procurement, construction and logistical terms? Even if its a present/ gift there is nothing like a free lunch especially that that government is using its taxpayers money.
Wake up and let to partner with foreigners on 50/50 terms!!
The last report I was receiving was that SA blacks were getting poorer. Will it not be better that they channel their money to their people? SA has so far failed to promote the NAKALA development corridor for the development of Eastern, Northern and Luapula provinces. They better choose a project that will better address the plight of zambians.
Not being negative but do they have the money?? South Africa’s economy is also going down the Drain; would they have surplus Cash to spend in Zambia?? Would wait until built before giving them any credit. Tell your people to stop troubling Zambians if you trully respect Zambia for the role played during your fight for freedom.
All this time close to a hundred years is when you are coming to say thank you?
South Africa should first clean up their Shebeen riddled shanties before building in Zambia.
Charity begins at home, what are they trying to prove?
Load of BS, how about building a modern Soweto first.
Ba Mulenga and Jelita …kwena mulichikopo..
Please elaborate with the aid of a neatly labeled diagram…
Its high time will rid ourselves off this “beggar” mindset, if the ANC party wants to build something monumental let them buy commercial land or commercial property at the current market rate in one of the cities ie. Lusaka and lets see them build a 70 storey high-rise building.
The opposition party (Democratic Alliance) in RSA wont allow this. No one in RSA will ever allow this. How can they build a city in another country when their own country is suffering. And who gives the ANC the right to build something in another country with the RSA governments money( that doesnt belong to them). I cant wait ti see the reaction of the people of RSA and the opposition partys!
it would be better for SA to build a large modern international airport in Lusaka as its already named KK.
I do not think a city makes sense when are number of South Africans do not have basic needs like water…
While the gesture is appreciated, a city is too much. The appreciation what role Zambia played in the liberation of the entire Southern Africa putting our little resources , money, universities, houses ,camps etc need to be highly appreciated by SA were Zambians have been treated as second class.
Very naive or st–pd journalist! No country has ever built a city in another country. What bull!
Depends how you look at it. Empire builders kinda did that…then again the source of the resource makes it iffy :)
I agree with you Lerato. A Phiri – most, if not all empires, built cities in the colonies using the colonies’ resources and in most cases manual labor, too. RSA I am sure will send its hordes of unemployed to do the building including digging of trenches and sweeping the new city’s streets… and psst: THEY WILL USE YOUR RESOURCES!!!!!!!
Well Zambia is TARRING A ROAD IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY!!!!! The Pedicle Road!!!! Only zed can do this without blinking an eyelid!!!!
What nonsense!
Well done
Chiluba messed up the relation with South Africa. The South Africans really wanted to honour Zambia with large amounts of Projects & Bilateral Agreements. However, as soon as they saw how Chiluba treated KK, they took a step back.
It was only when RB came to power that these negotiations started and Mandela gave the blessing to honour Zambia and of course the contributions KK made to the fight for Freedom in Southern Africa, especially in case of South Africa
Now where this Project will be anointed is something that PF and Sata has already started manoeuvring to benefit certain ethnic group. So far it is believed that the Project will be either in Southern Province or Eastern Province to promote tourism.
will it be in barotseland or northern rhodesia”?
When you use cartoon pseudonyms you end up thinking like one…
As much as it is a gud idea, wen viewed solely it leaves one wonderin to the fact, that why is the south african goverment suddenly doin ths?yes its in favour of our continued relationship of which we r forever in debted bt one wil nt dispute coz tha contraction of ths city wil add value 2our country and probably improve tha livin condition of most Zambians honestly speakin, but 2me it would hav translated major if it was put as a grant or in form of aid towards a section of our society…..pls help clarify!!!!!!!
Ok ok ok, as much as I’d like to say…’yeeey’ to this but am on the fence on this article. First of, it doesn’t make that much sense for a government to build a city in another country…whole whole new “city”??? come one people! And they won’t even tell us where our Zambian government has agreed to build this city, when and how much it’ll cost. If SA has that much money, why not just give it to GRZ as a grant and let them decide how to use it? This is truely wishful thinking for those of you thinking this will actually happen. Now if they want to build KK a masion, that’s different not a whole damn city. In your dreams Zambians…lol, in your dreams!
I doubt if it will be a complete city. If at all better to build an Airport/Housing Project/Modern University/Hopsitals etc…
The USA, UK, France still has millions of people in dilapidated housing projects or councils flats but still that does not stop these countries providing to poor nations. It’s just a circle of life.
When we give to our friends or family, we do it out of love and not because where things are coming from there is a Pool of Treasures
GIVE..AND.. IT..SHALL. BE..GIVEN..BACK..TO..YOU!!!!
I can imagine the Zambia Daily Mail reporter nodding attentively, whilst he is enjoying the free drinks and free nosh on offer at the RSA Embassy and writing this utter B.S.
This just goes to show how foolish and stup%d our RSA counterparts think of us, I don’t see him making such utterly careless statements (without stating costs) in Nigeria as they would laugh him out of his own Embassy in Lagos.
Zambians let be serious, it is not that cheap to build a city. Are you telling me that south africa will use their tax payers money to beautify zambia and create jobs in zambia while dozens of south africans need job and better housing? People are even happy and giving ideas, what are you serious. This will probably a small township (compound with one or two shops). It is our job as zambians to develop our country.
BS they are building castles in the air, why cant they first build soweto before they build us a city? SA dont think we are fools to be fooled. Fix your getto first.
Before we blame anyone, whats grz gata say about this? I am in RSA and I pretty sure SA Can do what they are saying, i mean they have the moola to do that.
How did you come to that conclusion did you ask your taxi driver? Check the definition of city in the dictionary and come back and comment..
I would perfer behind my soft bums
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha not even the mighty Chinese dragon can promise that with its very deep pockets, who is South Africa? You have rocket levels of youth unemployment and crime you want create thousands of jobs in Zambia.
Hahahahahaha who is going to vote for you in South Africa ba ANC???
Hmm. I was wondering if the offer to build a city in NW Province by a Chinese mining company fizzled out. Considering they are rebuilding USA infrastructure maybe we can generate a ‘build a Zambian city’ bidding war and save ourselves the effort lol :) Nah seriously! My point is Zambia has been offered a city by peeps from another country before and it was China in 2008 :)
If they want to build a city, why do they want to build it with conditions attached. Zambians should be suspicious of free things and learn to reject them. What South Africa needs to do is be more fair in its trade and travel relations with its neighbours. We don’t need a city, for what? We have our own cities. I’m not even sure if their parliament will allow the government to spend a huge amount of money on another country when its own people are still living in poverty. Only recently some workers went on strike over pay. WAKE UP ZAMBIANS. Your illiteracy, naivety, stupidity and dullness can shock even Satan the devil – how do you celebrate such an announcement? Upuba kupaka ndiye problem.
Tell them!
Wishful thinking. I can’t see the logic or rationale behind the RSA Govt building a ‘city’ in a another country. It’s simply not economically viable. Anything close to this would have to be a private sector driven project but I’m still sceptical of the grand nature of it all.
Go tell it to the birds S.A.With a myriad of problems such as shanty housing and the cripling strikes by cosatu it’ll be suicidal for the ANC to even dream of such folly. Its not even good for zed.The last thing we want foreigners to reinforce is our culture of expecting freebies. This wud be akin to giving us fish as opposed to teaching us how to fish.
Maybe they can also borrow the old plans lying in an archive in yonder country that gave us the 7 mining towns so we can remember how it was done before and pin them on a wall to remind us how visionaries shouldn’t be a dirty word when we eventually start planning how to build our own new ultra modern options to our current legacy of shame :) If there is one thing we will be doing it is building, upgrading and maintaining. I would love to see our peeps get opportunities to create, design, plan… Nice gesture SA. Hope people on the ground in your hood get it coz some are still waiting. Good PR move too! No sarcasm here from a positive dreamerchaser:)
This is the type of empty pipe dream conversations President Zuma has with his fellow dull dinosaur leaders at SADC summits dinners after he has one-two glasses of neat whiskey with Viagra!!
Perhaps this was KK’s vision to support the front line States. An Economic payback or gain! What moral recognition have we ever got back from Angola, Mozambique or Zims? Nothing but insults as beggars.
Panse with this idea. I toured Soweto and Eldarado park in Joburg. These are their own dilapidated areas that are in in need of city status and to view Zambia needing a city is a cheek of a statement. Quite a few Zambians living in SA don’t stroll freely there without being harassed or deported for obvious reasons! No wonder ANC is being attacked within its own circles for not focussing on its peops.
I totally agree with you. Let them upgrade SOWETO and rehab Hillbrow instead! Racism and discrimination of sorts still exists in SA and in SA controlled companies right here in ZED. if they have too much money , let them spend it on their poor. We will sort ourselves out as Zambians!
Most of you bloggers are not up to date with whats going on in Africa. Ther is a new kind of building going on in Africa, and what south Africa is doing is what what is going on in Africa. Go to YOUTUBE and see the 10 FASTEST GROING CITIES IN AFRICA. and you will realise that Zambia is far backwards. I was impressed by the CITI DE FLAV in Congo DR ,which looks like a part of Dubai. The other two new cities in Angola will make Zambia look like a joke. There is more in Ethopia, Nigeria and the Guinea. Kitwe s Mufuchani area has already been identified for a new City by the Chinese.
# 34 Busakile Man, we would all like our cities to be like Dubai and better, but we would like to build them ourselves not as a hand me down from a foreign country. The profits of our minerals are being externalised in quantities enough to clear our external and internal debt several times over. Our government is treating miniing investors like we owe them the world. Poverty is in our minds, not in our pockets and natural resources.
BUSAKILE MAN
We are very well aware of what is happening on the ground in Africa especially in the construction sector…all those projects you have mentioned are either being carried out by the private sector or respective governments or via public private partnerships schemes none of those projects are being carried out via inter government assistance.
Look at our Kenyan counterpart’s blueprint Kenya 2030; The Konza Technology City, a planned state-funded 5,000-acre site, will ideally transform into a city propelled by technology businesses, financial services firms, and other enterprises centered on the business and science world.
Konza will be surrounded by some of the countries most important infrastructure, such as Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the ports and railway of Mombasa. In fact, it is precisely the presence of a well-oiled Kenyan infrastructure that is attracting new international investors to its tropical realm. Kenya’s current GDP is $70.6-billion, and the goal is to increase that number by 10-percent within the next 20 years while subsequently creating a middle-income country with a discernible middle class.
This is UNACCEPTABLE! Is there no land in SA for them to build a city and name it KK? South Africans are racists and xenophobic and the times I ve spent with either a black or white South African I ve always noticed that they do not like foreigners. Those of you bloggers who are celebrating about this stupid announcement need to re-look into yourselves and find your pride.
Our friends are putting in place 20 year strategic infrastructural development projects and working with major players Google, Samsung, and Nokia to achieve these goals and here you have this folly about building a mere Boma for bus drivers and passengers to relieve themselves in-route to god knows where.
Only Zambians can develop Zambia.
Wake Up!!
Build you for 4 stores you are planning somewhere between Mongu & Lusaka. Yes and RSA need to pay for copper the boars has been surviving own for last 100 years. Using Zambian copper to manufacture bullets to shoot ANC protestors & supplying some surplus to UNITA in Angola.
First cover those open toilets in thembisa or is it kwamatshu, we will go to china they`ll come and build that city
It will be good to have that in Zambia. Here in Canada, we have China town and is very very unique, the buildings, the compund and the shops are all in chinese style, we alsomy my little Italy very amazing, when you get to these places its as though you driving into a foreign land very beautiful. so if south Africa wanna do that is Zambia will be an honor for ustoo. coz development will get to zambia too in a special and unique way
And there will be crimes such as rape, murder and robberies on one hand and racial discrimination on the other hand. These are the vices you get in SA and you want them to come to ZED! Ask SA to come and build a city in Canada where you are.
Some how I am not feeling this one. An entire new city! for what!? The best they can do is to at least help build one of the already existing cities into our own “jorburg”—-as someone has already stated, improving Livingstone would be nice.
:)thank you your Excellency the SOUTH AFRICAN HIGH COMMISSIONER TO ZAMBIA,Sir thats a wonderful gesture ,well done and god bless you ,we will meet soon warm regards Raj
:)>-:)>-:)>-
Whats more disheartening? To hear the South African hig commissioner say that or to read my fellow Country folk celebrate at such talk.
I don’t want to sound negative, but just how possible is this?….a whole modern city?
No wonder our own polititians take us for a joke…and lie day in and day out, because we are a big joke indeed.
You can say that again! zambian thinking sucks!
Hold on to the celebrations people, this is not gonna happen. South Africa is a big economy in Africa but they don’t have the money to build a city in Zambia. Where are they going to get the money from when they’re struggling to provide for their own citizens? I think the High Cos just in a good mood and was trying to entertain his Zambian guests.
since you what to honer KK plz build that city in Chinsali as a heach-quatr for Muchinga… but we know its all politics at the end
A City !!!! my foot . . . South Africans are busy demostrating throughout over non provision of basic services – piped water, electricity and sewers and why should they come to Zed and waste their money . . .sounds fake to me !
I think we ought to be ashamed as a nation. How can we keep our own polititians accountable when we have kidneys for brains? Please Zambians, let us not do more harm to ourselves by being too simplistic. Let us first deal with the issue of ‘more money in our pockets’, this is the most important thing for now. I hope you agree.
I am personally doing just fine, but when I sit and see my breathren shout all the political slowgans, when they are used as instruments to office and when they are used as door mats there after, and when they beam with stupid hope and promises,……. I cry, and my heart bleeds.
Indeed friendship is like a tapestry woven thru da years with tears, joy & laughter. Epashili pakuleka SAUBE we deserve it.
Let the city be built in Chinsali. This is where our founding father Kenneth Kaunda was born, this is where another prominent son of ,Zambia Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe lies and am sure where the same KK will lie. Why not accord Chinsali that status. There is a lot of space there for proper planning.
What he means is that they shall build a shopping mall in the outskirts of Lusaka. The mall will be planned and constructed by South Africans. Architects, builders, plumbers etc will all come from South Africa even the cement that will be used will come from SA. In this way the ANC govt will tell south africans that they are providing employement to them and that infact some South Africans are even working in Zambia.
Clearly SA has seen that we lack city planning and want to show us how to build a city. If the SA government *is* willing, let them destroy and re-build Siavonga as the ultimate tourists destination, with casinos, a beach front, airport and highways, etc.
If they are not willing to build a whole city, let GRZ, at least get building and maintenance plans, bring experts from SA to come show us how to innovate – we have been stagnant for far too long.
We need all the help we can get.
Come to think of it do we have a Mandela City, OR Tambo City, Steve Biko City , Walter Sisulu City somewhere in South Africa? Why doesnt the SA govt upgrade Thembtsa or Soweto to city status and name them in honour of their heroes?
Mpika has a vast empty land, you will do well if you built your city here.
What is The Excellence Chikane smoking in Zambia? Building a modern city in Zambia when South Africa is on the brink of financial ruin!!
Zambia was still very poor when she pushed her meagre resources into the freedom struggle of her neighbours mostly the prolonged struggle in South Africa. she got bombed by the apartheid regime. the money she spent on South Africa, Zimbabwe, Angola, Mozambique could have gone into serious infrastructure development like South Africa is trying to attempt to pay back. so its a welcome move and hope it materialises. Good gesture of gratefulness though!
Its true muntu alibe zabwino.you ve never seen a man’s wife avala vigamba but he buys new car or nice clothes for a hule ah stop doubting jusy wait nd see.
# 7 are you mad??!!
You exhibit the shallow analysis and Mumbwa-Mumbwa stupidi+y of the typical consumer oriented hunger-striken Zambian. Believe me, when someone tells you they are giving something to you for free, what they will evetually take from you is many times more than what they put in. Think for once with your brain, not your hungry stomach. Are you too freakin lazy to build your own cities, you prefer one built by a foreigner? You really disgust me.
But to answer your question, yes I am mad. We have tried being reasonable countless times before and it doesn’t work. Mad and unreasonable is fashionable these days. Its what distinguishes the progressives from the losers. I am proudly mad and progressive. Join the club or be a donation-accepting slave for the rest of your useless life
I can’t just believe how some minds work. Having hope hope is a good thing, but when it becomes having faith in polititians, then something is seriously wrong. May be if we had believed, we were going to be powering our industry on diesel made from grass.
Good morning
Some people are so negative and bad-minded that they will see something bad in everything.
So what is wrong with South Africans building a modern city in Zambia if they feel obliged to do so?
Maybe that they could better spend the money on things we really need?
Pipe dreams !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Zambian are too busy critising everything and offer no solution to anything. We are a talking nation, when are going to develop. South Africa was build by whites take time to analyse things, you fools.
Its a nice gesture. However, I dont understand why they have to build another city instead of improving the existing ones e.g Lusaka, Livingstone, Ndola, Kitwe etc. The money to be spent on building a new city can improve our existing ones, it doesnt make sense. Is it just a city or will be another province in Zambia for South Africa?
all bloggers chill, what SA is saying is that what zambia did for them is priceless,no amount of money can settle that…the other thing u are not asking yourselves before u criticise is HOW BIG WILL THIS CITY BE..? like how many square km wide and length…? what if this city will be a size of lets Avondale are u critics still going to yap..? SA is serious about this coz the H. commissioner would not say such a thing if it hasnt been relayed to from the SA government coz he would lose his job…As we speak here in SA north west province has a district named after KK…that just shows how much respect they have for KK and zambia as a whole… Zimbabwe was developed becoz of our copper but they cant show us appreciation…so SA we also salute u…its a good move
Instead of building a modern city (which is doubtful) the South Africans should be requested to complete the UNZA buildings and modernise that institution. A modern city will be a waste of resources because Zambia has no capacity to manage such a city. If councils can fail to maintain fountains at a traffic circle how will they manage a whole city. Thank God this idea is just a dream.
They’ve built 3 in RSA. we have 1 in solwezi
Useless Zambia needs this help, next up ask chinese for a national carrier …. a country that has never had war, blesses with natural resources, skilled labor but poor. Shame
This is a good gesture by SA. We need to find ways to work together as SA and zambia are joined at the hip. It is sad that some black South Africans, mainly out of ignorance and petty jealousies want to treat Zambians in a demeaning manner. My wish is that we can stay above this and work together for the betterment of the peoples of these two great nations. You know, a little while back the white South Africans I met in the diaspora tended to be hostile towards fellow Africans, but I have found recently that they are more embracing. It is truly amazing. Let us share our talents SA.
The idea is very much welcome. we are in a hurry to have such modern facilities, please we have a lot of space in the central part of Zambia particulary kapiri mposhi being the most central. By so doing you will be assisting our government in creating more jobs for all and in all the parts of the nation unlike the present situation where only Lusaka is benefitting.
Ala Lusaka ikapoleka bane!!!!
A good place to start, is to stop deporting us on pretext of Yellow fever!!!
ndate Chikane don’t waste your meagre resources on st.up.id, thieving, dirty scum. Just teach these primates stuff to do with hygiene. Start by ordering these primates to pick up the faeces in the Lusaka central business district.
Impossible, that’s just what SA would have done if they had enough resources,Chikane you are too quick to make pronouncements, patience please!Building a city is a simple thing to do and you can put time scale on it,a city is built over many many years and in this world of politics I don’t see every South African supporting the idea when many live in Shanty compounds like soweto. It is a wish.Yes,if they had said improving already existing infrastructure like our road network, building a new hospital or just renovating UTH,expanding KK Airport, building a new stadium
Ofcourse you know I meant to say building a city is not a simple thing to do.
Lusaka Copperbelt road is another example, this road is a very busy road with heavy traffic, south Africa can make a dual carriage motor way, mind you not may are using trains between these places and depend on this road no wonder why it is a (red route)where many of our relatives/friends have lost their lives. We need a motorway in Zambia.Let’s not think of a city when we can not manage what we already have.
If SA appriciates what we did for them they would not be mistreating Zambians the way they do. Zambians are killed in SA, deported daily asked to have yellow fever vaccines despite not being in yellow fever area. The black south African see a makwerekwere when the see a Zambian while a white sees a nigga. It is impossible to get employed there but they want to bring their people here to build a city that we do not need.
Also Zambians we should not continue with this beggar mentality were we celebrate at everything “free”. Foreigners have kept us were we are by talkin advantage of our resources. They have always come with gifts even the time of slavery. We should start taking advantage of evry resource. Put a price to everything including keeping refugees. We should be chargin UNHCR
It is welcome, give them Mongu or Kalabo to build.
look at it this way: they build a damn city. spent $10. The question is: what would be in the city? Logically if you spend $10 you should get back $20. Its not about building a city. WAKE UP! its about putting industries in that so called city which will pollute, use zambian electricity and cheaper zambian labour and produce goods to benefit the southafrican economy. ESKOM no doubt is already streteched in terms of power supply and it logical to build industry elsewhere. come on guys, even the states is doing it. Even Germany. Take a mercedese benz factory to china and you’ll rip the rewards than building it in Germany. The whole plan is not someone talking from nowhere. It’s a longterm strategic plan.
This is long overdue. Zambia paid dearly at the expense of liberating its neighbour. Zimbabwe and Namibia should also do similar gestures. Our money was spent on building Harare and Windhoek (to a minor degree). We lost our time, energy and infrastructure during the struggle.
We Zambians can be very native. For once, let us encourage South Africa to do what is in their heart. Zambia is another province of SA. Everything we have including shopping malls have a South African finger print. So, why are we so negative to this good idea? Let us give suggestions on where to build such a city and then wit to see SA implement it.
Zambia did a lot for south, you never know maybe they have just realised most there wealth is ours so why not share with us if we did at a time when we didn’t even have enough.
Zambia did a lot for south, you never know maybe they have just realised that most of there wealth is ours so why not share with us if we did at a time when we didn’t even have enough.
If this is true it can be great coz these guys have never really appreciated our contribution to their independence and liberation.Mozambique,Namibia, Zimbabwe , and many others must follow suite
Don’t believe anything reported by Zambia Daily Mail, they don’t understand English and have most likely grossly misquoted High Commissioner Chikane. Does the Mail know what it takes to build a city or does the Mail mean a suburb? Does the Mail know that the ANC of SA is under pressure from its own people to deliver social and economic benefits to its citizens? Can Muvi TV please go and verify with Chikane.
Lets wait and see how it pans out before criticising
Why build a new city when the old ones are dilapidated and abandoned such as Mansa, Mongu, etc. I have said let us a model provincial city and build Mansa, Mongu to that standard simultaneously and lets have that money from SA to do it.
There is more than what meets the eye, the idea is good, but also keep in mind that South Africa asked that some of the South African farmers move to Zambia as the South African government is working on the land reform program. This means it is also being built to accommodate the farmers from there( Not only farmers will come but their relations too-so there is need for a city). Not a bad idea i would think. It is all up to the Zambian people and government to put laws in place to make people live in Zambia permanently.
Appreciable gesture but stupid idea aimed at creating jobs for South african companies. Those of you suggesting that we give them Kafue are super stupid. The only reason why South africa is more developed right now is is that they had settlers unlike Zambia who had ‘gold diggers’ who left with the riches.
I know a Zambian who proposed the same idea but it was rejected by selfish politicians. It’s very possible and zambia does need to build a new modern city. Modern in every sense. It’s cheaper to build a modern city than to spend money on what is already there. You make money from building a modern city, how do you make more money by building a motorway between kitwe and lusaka unless you put toll gates?????
Ubupuba bubi bane
Dont fool us we are fine with chinese building economic zones.
What is this? Is this a certain new kind of nonsense? If it is then i give the south africans a point for creative nonsensical talk, well done.
Would you rather they build a mall, an international Airport or a City? I don’t see what’s wrong with all this negative talk. Obviously, when they start building the city, they will create employment for thousands of loafing Zambians. What’s wrong with that. Think before you criticize. We all know if they donate money, it will never be seen on the ground. This is a great idea as long as they don’t do it without the Zambian government being fully involved in the whole process.
What is their agenda, vision objective or aim building this modern city in our country.. I don’t think its in appreciation of what Zambia has done for SA. If this was the case, they wouldn’t have be mistreating the zambians or foreigners. I have south African as they are full of pride, crime and xenophobic manners. Atase
I’m sure the high commissioner has been misquoted by our over zealous reporters. South Africa is Africa’s most advanced country by far and therefore we should partner with them to develop our own country. The cost of building a new city from scratch could be approx $2 to $40 billion rough estimate based on cities build in equatorial guinea, abuja and Dubai. I put the cost of modernising Lusaka to approx $5 billion. You don’t have to be a mathematical genius to work out where the source of this founding can come from. Economic mismanagement and lack of vision is what lets us down. Our leaders need to look at Win Win partnerships as basis for development and not expect handouts as a way of life to win over the electorate.
Chinsali will be ideal
I AM PERSONALLY, HUMBLED WITH THIS GESTURE BY THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT. TRULLY, WE ZAMBIANS DON’T BLOW OUR OWN TRUMPET ABOUT THE HELP WE RENDERED NOT ONLY TO SA, BUT ALMOST ALL NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES AND BEYOND. BUT, ITS HUMBLING TO HEAR OTHER BLOWING OUR TRUMPET IN OUR BEHALF. I PERSONALLY TRULLY ACCEPT KK AS THE NAME OF THAT TOWN
The ignorance and cynicism of Zambians towards good things is shockingly amazing. What is wrong with the South Africans developing a modern city in Zambia? Just go to the Skyscraper City website and see how other African countries are building new cities and modernizing existing ones. In Zambia, there are plans to develop a new city in Kitwe after the World Bank funded Mufuchani Bridge is constructed across the Kafue River. The British government has offered with the planning of this new city in Kitwe and the Chinese and several other international investors are in on what is happening in Kitwe. Only Busakile Man seems to know about this. All other bloggers don’t even seem to know what is happening in their own backyard in Kitwe!
Heeheee! what was the reporter and HE the Commissioner drinking and smoking!
