The Movement for Multi party Democracy has been commended for the democratic manner the party held its national convention.

Yesterday, Nevers Mumba was elected Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) president with a landslide victory over his closest rival Felix Mutati during the party’s 3rd extra ordinary convention held in all the ten provinces.

Dr. Mumba polled 870 votes in the re-run against 422 votes of Mr. Mutati.

A re-run was inevitable as none of the seven candidates managed to amass the 50 percent plus one threshold required by the party Constitution.

Former evangelical fellowship of Zambia executive director Bishop Paul Mususu says that it is commendable that the former ruling party held its elections in a very democratic manner.

Bishop Paul Mususu has however called on the MMD to ensure that it maintains its existence in the political affairs of the country.

He says that Zambia needs political parties that will ensure that proper checks and balances are provided to the government.

He says that government alone cannot manage to administer affairs of the country without the presence of the opposition.

Meanwhile, political analyst Alex Ngoma says that Zambians should learn a lesson from the way the MMD has conducted its elections.

Dr, Ng’oma has however advised the MMD to be focused in addressing the challenges that the party has been facing.

He says that the president elect should ensure that losing members are embraced for the benefit of the people.

He says that unity should prevail in the MMD to ensure that the party remains strong after suffering a shocking defeat last year.

He says that the MMD should ensure that it remains strong for the benefit of democracy.

  1. The manner in which MMD has elected its leader is typical of democracy in practice. This is indded an outcome of the people by the people for the people. This result has equally pitched up the principle to be emulated by other parties. However, we agree with Mususu that electing a leader of a party is not an end in itself, particularly for MMD who led Zambia to one of the most prosperous phases of our nation’s history. They have been challenges along the way that need addressing such as issues of corruption which in a way has already began by electing a clean leader that PF govt will find it hard to accuse of any issues connected to him. Dr Mumba need all his fellow contestants to be taken in their individual standing with the party and general Zambian public.

  2. That guy by the name “NGA ULACULA LOOBE, IFWE NI PA NKOLOKO” used to irritate during the campaigns.
Now let’s hear how different the new MMD vision is from the old and rejected one which has been dented by corruption.

  3. Kudos to all candidates, the fine men and women of valor making the General membership that have remained unflinchingly true to their love for competitive democracy and change! MMD with its ever burgeoning democracy is the mother and father of our young democracy. Keep putting the house in order you have unparalleled solidarity.

  4. An exhibition of true democracy within MMD ranks and hope this will be the norm when elected again into power. Bravo MMD and teach PF what democracy is unklike a one man soldier party. PF is a shame to Zambia.

  5. Rev. President of MMD Bravo and congrats. Now call all those who left the party in the past 6 six months back to consolidate the party. William Banda can be called back. He is wasting time there. They will chase him like a dog if he does know them.

  6. With exception of Hon. Muteteka and Simbao whom i have never met in the run up to this election, all these MMD officials who were aspiring for the MMD Presidency from Dr. Mumba, Hon. Mutati, Pande, Dr. Musokotwane and Kavindele wittingly pledged conceding to the winner and offering support in the aftermath of elections. Zambians in the know call on you all to keep your pledge and be part of the consolidation drive towards a big push. As of yesterday i have proof that Hon Mutati sent his congratulatory message from Kitwe to the President elect Dr. Mumba pledging unflinching loyalty to the collective MMD values and Zambia. Pande and Dr. Musokotwane have done the same. Democracy reigns in rank and file of MMD. Bravo!

  7. I urge identified savvy and versatile political machinists that served these fine men in the race as support staffs to realign and consolidate in the party operational lines while some also serving these leaders as PAs. Such folks as Sunday Chanda must extend to Dr. Mumba the same services he rendered to his candidate. We followed with pride the works and professional conduct of this selfless intelligent Zambian. Many of such must constitute a pool of intelligent think tanks, strategists and mobilizers. We pledge solidarity in resource mobilization, channeling and pitches.

  8. When MMD was formed in 1991, it conducted democratic elections when we saw four pipo contesting for the party presidency without any intimidations. Thereafter, a sitting president always had influence thereby disturbing democratic elections. Chiluba handpicked Mwanawasa and we saw how Mulongoti and Late Tetamashimba demonised other contestants at the demise of Mwanawasa when they bulldozed RB as presidential candidate. The democratic tenets upon which MMD was formed went to the dogs and we began to see the UNIP characteristics taking toll on the MMD. I advise all parties to do away with national conventions held in one place but opt for provincial ones in order to do away with hooliganism and undemocratic tendencies.

  9. Go Zambia Go!!!! In unwavering spirit of democracy we will belabor to counter dictatorship’s only option of divide and conquer on the masses as known for anesthetizing the population with hollow promises, threats, slander, job offers to criminals so as to be in strategic roles for the purpose of asphyxiating democracy and the rule of law. Known for deals of Nolle prosequi with criminals, shielding of public funds embezzlers and unconstitutionally intimidating the judiciary. In the unfolding political order decorum and patriotism, such vile schemes will not bring success or dignity to failed presidency, because exactly these are the vices Zambians in the street are tenaciously fighting against.

  10. MMD has gone through this successful competitive election demonstrating to PF known for it’s allergy to competitive democracy. Lets see the already unfolding and vicious scramble for power in PF among the factions of Kabimba, GBM, M’membe, Lubinda and Panji. By the way i have recently met and engaged 3 of these mentioned here on their thinking. Its getting vicious and implosive in the camp. Its only uncle ABC holding together the “inoperative imaginary community of PF” where Sata remains PF and PF is Sata.

  11. This is a good report. MMD is the standard bearer in Zambian politics. Hopefully all other parties will learn from it. Idea of provincial elections is brilliant. As #9 Spectator said, it eliminates hooliganism we used to see at national conventions. It is also cheaper to hold.

Bravo MMD. Know that you have won many hearts by this one act alone. This will keep you in good stead at 2016. It now looks very likely that MMD will bounce back to power at 2016 under the leadership of Nevers Mumba and the new party management team.

  12. If MMD continue to score good ones like this, it may cause Sata and PF sleepless nights. Certainly the pressure is now on PF to perform. If they dont, at 2016, they will not be as popular as they were at 2011.

It’s always great to have a formidable opposition party!!

  13. Nevers will ruin MMD just wait and see. This is good for HH to play his cards right because Nevers has no national appeal take advantage of that because in Northern and Luapula PF and MMD will split the vote just as southern province voted for HH dening RB the winning vote.Tables have changed Nevers is not a factor.

  14. So Nevers Mumba is a former leader of a church and a former leader of a political party. He cunningly abandoned both. What an opportunist and power hungry individual! Some of you even call him a man of God? Please, stop bringing in the name of the Lord in this dirty business, that is blasphemy.

  15. These democratic elections would have been more meaningful if they were the party in power! Anyway congratulations is the proper response but I have a feeling they will revert back to undemocratic tendancies once back in power. Remember RB went unopposed and our memories are still fresh.

    • True, and that party is out of power; so it has been humbled. No option but to pretend to be democratic; vote them in power, it will take 40 years for them to do a single thing except stealing!! Basakala Nyongo.

  16. I would also  like to congratulate the MMD for showing the way how elections should be held. You have lived to your name. Where are the naysayers like Katele Kalumba now? His silence is very loud. MMD continue flying high.

  17. Good first step ba MMD. Remember, it’s not how you fall, but how you rise up from the fall that counts in the long run. The progressive World is watching. So, next step is What is MMD’s ideology? What steps is MMD taking to prevent retards like Liato from disgracing our Country like he did? I am sure there are still many more like him, after all birds of a feather flock together. For checks and balances to be genuinely productive at Country level, players must be credible.

  18. Imwe bafikamba why did you reject the 50+1 in the constitution when people asked for it?Power hungry Nevers Mumbo Jumble is now running the MMD!!Find the money now and pay the registrar of societies for your party.Use the Montreal funds!!

  19. # 28 Watch the space because MMD will enjoy overwhelming good will that is set to throw PF into confusion and irrelevancy. The popular call from friends, supporters and pro-democracy movements around the world as has been the call from many of us patriots has been that they sought the leadership issue now democratically solved. For the love of democracy we will invest in and defend democracy with our pockets and channeled support from webs of networks. There are already many outstanding high value pro-democracy invitations lined up. When its about the future and progress of Zambia, there are no jokes but work to be done. The PF regime’s communist reversal politics of killing democracy, freedom, hope and unity is headed for real challenges.

  20. “Sort out”

The popular call from friends, supporters and pro-democracy movements around the world as has been the call from many of us patriots that they “sort out” the leadership issue now democratically solved.

  21. # 28

Yielding to popular calls from the masses, with internal consensus MMD is for the

    1). 50+1,

    2).  Running mate and

3). Dual Citizenship  adaption and enactment in the new constitution.

I can bet you with facts, President Sata is viciously opposing all these but unfortunate for him, he will be humiliated because these will pass in the new constitution.

    • Ba Senior Citizen naimwe…these are the same calls MMD rejected to enshrine in the recently failed constitution! What makes them saints now???

  22. #9 Louis Shalala, MMD can teach you a lot of democracy if you agree to look at the last PF Convention where HE Mr Sata was “re-elected” as PF President. Look also at the last 180 days of PF fist and power.

  23. Only a fool can recognize the MMD with its corruption tag hanging on its neck. As for me MMD is gone out of  my mind..

  24. Indeed democracy by mmd, what a delusion? How possible ist that mutati got only one vote from his fellow NEC members and yet he is even leader of the opposion in parliament. This election was stage managed, RB and his mistress Siliya had a long hand in this. does mmd with NEVERLANDS (nevers mumba) at its helm got the stamina to run the full race.

  25. The MMD leadership at best is baffling, they count on failed outsiders to lead their party to disaster. First they brought in a tired pensioner Rupiah Banda who left them in a total mess and now they opt for another failure whose instability is well known. I wholly agree with #36 Tony Blair.
By the way, has any of the defeated candidates congratulated Nevers Mumba and has any of them reiterated their campaign pledges to support ‘whoever wins’ the party presidency?

  26. Thats how sad politics around the world has become. People are told to choose between a she-goat and a he-goat, what kind of choices are those. Its a pity for MMD, the election was staged and the party will sink, only the boat can help them survive.

  27. If Nevers Mumba is outspoken, that is good for politics as the PF will be made to work hard knowing there is someone who will talk. Thats what pushed Mwanawasa to even work hard because of the sleepless nights he got from SATA. HH has never been a factor in Zambian Politics. Come 2016, he will be 4th.

  28. was a vote ever cast at the pf convention? hope upnd was not doctored. what about mmd in their recent vote? can someone in know tell us if it was credible?

  29. I never for once thought that Nevers Mumba would arise to such stature. Never, as his name is, nver did I. I am still in shock but he threw the collar away and he became a politician who am I to criticise or condemn him. Although its hard to say this ‘Congrats ba Mumba.’
I think in the next elections it will be Wynter Kabimba, Elias Chipimo and Mumba. Or maybe Membe may stand…

  30. The good part of politics in Zambia is that any party voted out of power will never see the sun shining at state house. After PF rule just think of a different party to be in state house. Whoever is now in MMD leadership should know that no matter what good and sweet talk that will be said no chance to state house, this is a reality.

    • Zambian multi-party democracy is only 20 years old. Very year. Soon you will only ahve two major parties in the country PF and MMD, just like the USA and UK have settled down for only two major parties.

  31. What democracy are you talking about there was so much money flowing with Dora campaigning heavily all neck members were paid surely mps campaigning for never indeed mms is a corrupt party please anti corruption come in and find out were the money was coming from

  32. I love post idea lists like this (Sean Platt also did a great one recently). Your second topic is a great one ?C I think another idea you can add to it is blogging about a failure you had and what you learned from it.Great work!
