40 patients have successfully undergone free facial surgery of the lips and mouth at Arthur Davison children’s hospital in Ndola.

The exercise is sponsored by First Quantum Minerals (FQM) in partnership with government and other international organisations.

ZANIS reports that speaking during a media briefing at the hospital in Ndola yesterday, First Quantum Minerals Health Advisor Gertrude Musunka told journalists that the mine company held a joint operation with government through the Ministry of Health, Mission Medic-Air and Smile Train to provide free surgery of cleft lip and hard pallet of the mouth to Zambians at a cost of K100 million.

Ms. Musunka said Zambia’s health sector was barely coping with the huge deficit of personnel and stretched infrastructure which has prompted intervention from the private sector.

She said it was for this reason that the mine company teamed up with other stakeholders in a drive that will see hundreds of Zambians get costly effective re-constructive surgery.

Ms. Musunka disclosed that Zambia has only four (4) surgeons who are able to do specialized re constructive surgery of the lips and mouth.

And Lead surgeon Dr. Meshach Onguti said his team managed to successfully carry out surgery on 40 patients who included children and adults.

He said the team which has been in Zambia from the 20th May is happy that a number of patients were successfully assisted.

Dr. Onguti said his team has been carrying out such operations in a number of African countries where such specialised treatment is lacking.

He said lip and mouth deformities can be treated and worked on without difficulty.

Speaking earlier Resident Medical Officer Dr. Stanley Zulu said the health institution was grateful that it hosted the specialised treatment which will benefit many patients.

He said it was important that parents know that facial complications can be treated and should not hide their children but bring them to the hospital.

  1. This is what we want to see, Mining companies giving back. Social responsibility at work. I hope this is only the start.

  2. govt shd be ashamed and send more dental surgeons for training and not wait for hand outs……..but its a good deed by the train smile team…..

    • There is no shame in solving immediate problems while we prepare for long-term solutions. There is shame in showing a lack of appreciation of a job well done, and that goes to you.

    • you know a lot, but you seem not to appreciate concerted efforts to solve immediate problems as we plan the long-term…

  3. WHERE ARE THERE OPERATING THIS WEEK, I NEED THIS INFORMATION BADLY.  HAVE NEPHEW WITH THE SIMILAR PROBLEM.  PLEASE SOMEBODY TO TELL ME URGENTLY.

  4. WHERE ARE THEY OPERATING THIS WEEK, I NEED THIS INFORMATION BADLY.  HAVE NEPHEW WITH THE SIMILAR PROBLEM.  PLEASE SOMEBODY TO TELL ME URGENTLY.

  5. Please put Arthur Davison Hospital picture; not Ndola Central Hospital. The operations took place at ADH.

  6. Kams in Kitwe # 5&6 i think you can just Look up the YELLOW PAGES for Zambia ONLINE find the telephone number for Ndola Central Hospital then i guess from there someone might help you with the actual information leading to where they will be next. That would be my advice. ALL THE  BEST FOR YOUR NEPHEW AND WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK. I am sure you will be able to get the information from there.

  7. I think these online papers are now becoming too big headed and don’t want to listen to people who support them. why have you lusaka Times deleted my post where i told you to use Arthur Davison hospital picture. Again you have blocked my posting for telling you that Ndola Central is not Arthur Davison. so what is wrong in giving you a good advise?

    • All Zambian online papers are childishly protective. They want to hide their mistakes and dont want criticism of their professional shortcomings. All of them need good editors.

  8. Kams (5) – Speak to Dr Lungu at AD Hospital. Unfortunately, I can’t find the number now. He will give you information on the whereabouts of the team. But I am told this was highly advertised in the media in Zambia, though, sadly, many people did not see the adverts – problem of having too many TV and radio channels! Good luck! My son was one of the benefiaries. Thank you FQM!

  9. A PLASTIC SURGEON IS NEEDED FOR A WELL DONE FACIAL OPERATION. DO WE HAVE ANY ZAMBIAN PLASTIC SURGEON? IF WE DO NOT HAVE ANY, THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH SHOULD SEND SOME OF OUR BRILLIANT DOCTORS INTERESTED IN PLASTIC SURGERY SO THAT WE REDUCE ON HANDOUTS. OUR GOVERNMENT AND COMPANIES SHOULD EMBARK ON SPONSORING PROGRAMS THAT WILL REDUCE THESE “THANK YOU” SPEECHES.
