UPND vows to take on Police: Today is just the beginning of things to come-Siakalima

The opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) has said that it is ready for war with the Police. Special advisor to the UPND leader Douglas Siakalima said that the party will be ready to face the police following their declaration war as a result of today’s foiled upnd demonstration.

Mr. Siakalima said that what happened today is just the beginning of things to come stating that soon the party will hold mass demonstrations.

Speaking to journalists at the party secretariat shortly after the clashes with the Police, Mr. Siakalima said the conducted exhibited by the police was unprofessional.

He said that instead of arresting erring people, the police officers are busy harassing innocent citizens, a situation he described as unfortunate.

Mr. Siakalima said that the use of the police to silence citizens with concerns will not work. He said that Zambia is not a Police state for Police to be used to intimidate citizens with genuine concerns.

And Southern African Center for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has counseled UPND youths over its foiled demonstration to push for removal of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Mutembo Nchito.

In an interview with Qfm news, SACCORD information officer Obby Chibuluma said the UPND should have instead used other avenues to express themselves as opposed to resorting to demonstrating.

Mr. Chibuluma explained that the opposition party youths should have produced tangible evidence to substantiate their calls for the removal of the DDP rather than protest in the absence of evidence.

He said Zambians should be committed to engaging in dialogue on issues of national interest before taking to the streets.

Police today broke up a demonstration by UPND youths and arrested a number of them after they defied an order not to go ahead with the demonstration.

The police in the first place if they didnt allow themselves to be used by Sata should have given the permitt to the UPND youths but alas! They should freedom of expression in the country.   18. UPND should listen to advice coming from SACCORD. UPND frustrations represent frustrations of the majority of Zambians, but SACCORD are right to say street demonstrations should always be the last resort. UPND have a lot of money and might be the richest party in the country today (if we discount PF’s stolen wealth!), and so with the money they have UPND should conduct their own investigations and take the matter to court. There are plenty of whistle-blowers in government who can give them the information they need. HH should not spoil this chance to be in power as president or atleast in a coalition in 2016. But he also has to get rid of the ‘TRIBALIST’ tag…this is the time when history catches up with him because of the way he got rid of Patrick Chisanga and Sakwiba.

  28. At first I thought that blogging is there so that people can share views but it seems it is a platform for exchanging insults or to see who can insult more, I’m not sure how will that help to develop Zambia.
    The issue of DBZ, my understanding is that Zambian Airways was a limited company; the little I learned is that in the case of bankruptcy of the limited company, you can’t go for the director that is why they are called limited companies. Could someone educate me why it is different in this case especially that The Post and Nchito became shareholders after the loan was already given. UPND I’m not sure what agenda you are pushing, unless you have other evidence other than this,

    • But that is not the defense of the defendants in the case. If what you assert was true, then this would have been Nchito and Fred’s defense. Just calling yourself a limited company CANNOT sanitize you from the responsibility of paying back a loan when a company fails. If that were the case, I assure you no bank would lend money to a limited company. What Banks and other lenders do is demand Guarantees and sureties (Collateral), so that when the borrower fails to meet the terms of the loan, they have something they can get in return. Nchito put his company as a collateral and so did Mmembe (Post Newspaper). Do you understand now?

    Before you even go to the issue of whether a company is limited or not. That loan was dubiously acquired without any surety or guarantee. Zambian Airways status was known to be in ruins and not salvageable but they still managed to borrow our money. How was it done? Magande is part and parcel of this deal. This is why the Post supported him in the 2008 MMD party presidential elections.When they failed, they decided to go with PF. Its a dirty game of thieves and con men.

    Siakalima and his friends must not forget that being a regional party, they have very remote chances of winning the hearts and minds of people across the country for their misguided agenda. UPND just like our Judiciary must first reform to gain the respect & support of Zambians.

    Thanks for the information, so was the money borrowed before or after they became shareholders, borrowers can’t influence the lender, it’s the lender’s duty to scrutinize the borrower, you have mentioned the former Minister of Finance, from your explanation DBZ did not follow the procedure or were forced to lend the money, it is then the bank’s folly to lend that kind of money without surety. Probably the starting point would be why DBZ loaned Zambian Airways without surety, who was involved and why. Has it stands I can’t why directors should pay the money borrowed by a limited company, we need some connection to pin them

  40. Zambians we need to protect our democracy by not letting a few misguided individuals hijack the judiciary and undermine other solid institutions that have served us well so far. The problem I have seen with Zambians is that at times we react too late and many times citizens act dead just witnessing abuse of office by politicians. Many of us witnessed Chiluba and Banda abusing the presidency but did nothing.

    It is often costly to correct things when they have gathered momentum. That is why this action by UPND needs to be supported and many stakeholders should come on board and not leave all the work to UPND and Zimbabweans. Why should protesters in London be doing the work for us when it is we that are directly affected by this comedy of errors and incompetence?

    If I understand what you are saying is that DBZ gave a loan to Zambian Airways and then The Post and Nchito who were not shareholders at the time the loan was given were used as surety, in what capacity. If they became shareholders after the loan was already given, what did DBZ use as collateral at the time the loan was given

The reason Nchito became personally liable was for the simple reason that He signed a personal guarantee for us dollars 3 million. I am sure the Judge knows a lot about company law and all it’ s limited liability yada yada .He obviously scrutinized the evidence before him and gave Nchito a chance to exculpate himself , Nchito and his buddies chose to go to Plot Omero Mumba rd to complain and demand removal of the judges who had dared to endanger their livelihoods. Apart from Mmembe I have yet to ear Nchito deny that he signed a personal guarantee for the 14 billion Kwacha, aha blind faith be informed and educated.

    The reality is no bank ever lends even to a limited company if some form of surety is not available…. in this case your so called DPP stood surety for these loans. The DPP sinned to stand surety for these loans. The means in case of default by the limited company he was to pay the money back to DBZ. The court has passed judgement on this matter.
