Police condemned for detaining Journalists covering Zambia’s biggest Ivory theft story

Youths in the country have condemned the police for apprehending two journalists for following up on reports of over 25 tones of government trophies estimated at about K50 billion that went missing from the ZAWA storeroom.

Speaking from Kabwe, Youth Governance Alliance spokesperson Antonio Mwanza says the action by the police should be condemned in strongest terms as it poses a great danger to press freedom and human rights.

Mr. Mwanza has bemoaned the growing levels of un-professionalism in the police service stating that it is unacceptable for the police to torture and brutalize innocent journalists simply for trying to inform the public about the ivory thefts.

He has since charged that there is need for restructuring in the police service to instill, professionalism which he says is lacking at the moment.

Police are yesterday reported to have detained two journalists from Muvi TV and the Times of Zambia for following up the country’s biggest ivory theft story.

  1. And God is just watching. God. Do you exist? If you do, are you stronger than Sata? On whose side are you? I need an answer within 90 days!

  3. 4. The police are merely doing their job, most people that hate the police are criminals like most of you people that always against these nomble men and women in uniform. Most of our policemen are beta than most of u, who i can’t mention your names. We are happy with the job madam Charity u’r doing. May The Almighty Bless You in your daily duties. Amen!!!

  5. # 3 Satan is smiling at CNP, please do not involve God into this discussion. You people were warned against this Man but you forced God to give you Sata.Do not blame God on the things you are going through.People were ready to shed blood over this man so that he could come into power and so i see no reason why they should complain today. They should just wait until 2016.

    • Iiiweee, Isn’t god in control? We are talking about innocent newsmen and women being wrongfully detained, here. Doing their jobs that god apparently gave them and they god arrested and detained shouldn’t god intercede? That is what the bible say. Siyani mulungu ayanke mwine wace. Sikuti ali na kamwa?

  6. @Satan is smiling at CNP . FULL TIME SATANIST! fear God your creator, worship him and love him. shame on you ***** devil worshiper and your master is TB Joshua. big anus, stupid fool.

    • By calling the man of GOD(PROPHET TB JOSHUA) a satanist, really shows that you are the devil s workshop. For crying out loud prophet TB Joshua is a man of GOD who preaches the gospel of Jesus in truth,he delivers, heals and he casts out demons as it is written in the book of Mark16:16 .So what proof do have that for to suggest that the prophet is a satanist. You also need to read mathew12:22-37.

    • Who is better, he who questions god or he who insults he who questions god. Christians are very intolerant. It is like they own God. Kekeke

  7. The trade in ivory should be legalised and measures put in place to protect the elephant…most of the confiscated ivory is stolen anayway. Zambia could just be earning more forex from the ivory trade!

  8. Given Lubinda and Summer Kabimba know where that ivory is, PF sold is using the money from the ivory for campaigns. This is why they don’t want journalist to report this theft …

  9. RB was called all sorts of names over Zimbabwean Gold that was sold by DEC officers. Today is IVORY worth k50 billion. Civil Society toothless, TIZ mouthless

  10. I’ve never seen a bunch of dull, blood-thirsty and unprofessional Police Officers. Not long ago they almost killed harmless UPND youths. Well, welcome to the Vigilante days of UNIP

  11. so no need to vote then coz everyone is zambin and what ever is zambian is corrupt, police politician and urself.

  12. Who can get away with 25,000 kg of ivory except the government, it is pathetic that some bloggers are siding with the government even when they are glaringly wrong. The govt stole from itself the same way they came up with the Malawi Fuelgate, someone is getting rich but they never learn that they too will end up like Chiluba going to court everyday. There is an end to everything, even PF will loose power one day no matter the rigging they may apply and BaRotse will be another country if we continue with PF that does not respect One Zambia One Nation. I wish I could sleep and wake up in 2016

    • I caome against those evil words in Jesus’s name. Fool American police were beating girls protesting at Stanford university.

  13. You Zambians are just dull. If it was in another country, the video of that torture would have gone viral on YouTube and we would have been talking about the identity of which police officer was most brutal.

Use your phone video cameras for something useful other than fornication and zigi, zigi, zigololo. If children at ZCAS know how to make a porno, rest of you should have mobile phones on the ready for serious citizen journalism.

  14. Some of our fellow Zambian people are very fun. In the MMD regime, people used to be knifed in full view of the policy something that we all saw with our eyes. Today because of your political ambitions you are calling the police unprofessional for detaining some Journalist. You go on saying Journalists were tortured, brutalized and expect the Media to be quiet. Because they disciplined unruly UPND cadres the police are unprofessional. Let us be realistic people, remember that we all need the police, hence, give them chance to do the right. You even end up calling them illiterate when in actual fact they are more educated than you. We will not allow what happened in the MMD regime.

    • Whats you point? My friend, MMD is gone, please understand that. We are now governed by a new regime that is clearly not dealing with the issues that made MMD so unpopular. For how long will you keep using past misdeeds (MMD) to justify this circus?

    • “You even end up calling them illiterate when in actual fact they are more educated than you”… If YOU are more educated than them then God help us!

  15. So how come this so called the Post, “paper that digs deeper…only in it’s interest” is not even covering the report? Zambia unite and take your country back from these heartless thieves. Ordinary hard working citizens are suffering every day due to these thieving bunch of politicians and their cheerleaders from the Post!

  16. How does one measure the level of maturity in a nation. I t is the level of torelence and protection given to journalist by a sitting in govt. But this can not be said under this PF govt. A lot of things it is Dochi Kubeba and organizing bloggerss by one and only weatherman to sound like there are reasonable unbais bloggers out there, analysing why detaining journalist is okay this time around. MMD did try that tactic but it failed, let us see how you will blog your way out of the street vending, joblessness of your supporters, your poor energy policy if you have one at all.

  17. K50 billion worth of ivory guarded by a 200 pin security guard … what do your expect? And where does one take this much ivory, how does one move such … crossing borders, esp when everyone knows that ivory is missing.
I think there are several levels of corruption here, can ACC, DEC, TIZ say something?
And why is ZP harassing people who are helping them do their job — seeing that they are busy extorting money from innocent citizens.

  18. No.8- Either you are a police officer or you’ve never experienced their stupidity first hand. MOST ZamCops are a bunch of pathetic, corrupt individuals I tell you! Ask around the streets and see how much people dislike them

  19. SHAME..They might have a hand in the thieft, Who ordered them to arrest the journalist and for what reason??

  20. this story is incomplete. it does not say why the journalists were detained. further more LT needs to confirm some articles before publishing.

  21. IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THE COPS NEXT TIME YOU ARE IN TROUBLE DO NOT CALL OR RUN TO THEM …PERIOD, YOU UNGREATFUL BUNCH

  22. The police in Zambia do not understand the role of journalists. The think they are terrorists. It is completely unprofessional and backward to harass journalists who are simply trying to inform the nation on a matter of public interest. I thought over the last few years that some gains had been made to unpoliticise the police and make them more professional but accountable. What we are rather seeing now, is a POLICE FORCE that is pandering to the ruling regime without shame. The police think their role is to help sweep govts. dirt under the carpet and ‘deal’ with perceived state enemies. This is a typical trend towards GESTAPOism.
