Government to meet millers on the recent increase in the price of mealie meal.

Government will meet millers to chat the way forward on the recent increase in the price of mealie meal.

Agriculture Minister Emmanuel Chenda says government is sad that millers have opted to increase the price of mealie meal when there is surplus maize.

Mr. Chenda says government has been subsidizing the cost of maize it buys from the Food Reserve Agency and therefore sees no reason why millers should increase the price of mealie meal.

He says it is unjustified for millers to increase the wholesale price of mealie meal when there is sufficient grain stocks they buy from FRA.

Mr. Chenda has wondered where the millers have taken the huge stocks of maize they bought from FRA at a discounted rate.

The Minister who was in Kapiri Mposhi was speaking in a telephone interview with ZNBC News in Lusaka.

Some outlets have increased the retail price of mealie meal in most parts of the country by over 5-thousand kwacha to sell at 46-thousand kwacha from 40-thousand kwacha.

This is on account that the millers have also increased the wholesale price of mealie meal to 42-thousand kwacha from 35-thousand kwacha.

  1. If you increase minimum wages for shopkeepers who sell mealie meal, the shop owners will pass the cost to the consumers… this is what has happened, Emmanuel Chenda…. think!!!

  2. Production and running cost increases due to increase in renumeration : salaries so for companies to keep surviving they have to pass all costs to the consumer. It looks like PF had no plan of running government

  3. Don’t worry! Soon all the mills will have conveyor belts and other machines to replace their now expensive workers (no more guys like the ones pictured above). So smile, after this second round of retrenchments, mealie meal prices will come down!

  4. The cost of Maize is not the only factor that determines the cost of production. The other factors are transport, wages, energy etc. You should have mixed the govt with intellectuals from the other two thirds of Zambia. This is not to take anything away from the intellectual heavyweights of the northern region like GBMs, Sakenis, Satas etc but to complement them.

  5. Ba Chenda are u suprised? Any way wat can i expect from u? But ba ZESCO nimbushi saaaana, the power outages i have experienced this week are very retrogressive, U think Northrise is a Compound?? Besides all humans are equal and need equal treatment whether ku na kwa….. Mwanya i will sell Zesco to china privately in conjunction with the great GBM and u will all be retrenched. Useless characters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Collusion by millers should be addressed by government, millers association should be banned. There is too much collusion in pricing going on , the anti-monopoly wing should investigate how the came up with K5000?

  7. I would like to thank you for the efforts you have put in writing this site. I’m hoping the same high-grade site post from you in the upcoming also. In fact your creative writing abilities has encouraged me to get my own site now. Really the blogging is spreading its wings fast. Your write up is a great example of it.
