The extra ordinary Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) NEC meeting which met yesterday September 18 has resolved to field a candidate in the Mufumbwe parliamentary constituency by election to be held on November 8, 2012.

Party President Nevers Mumba said that his party remains hopeful that its partners, the UPND and other opposition parties will support the opposition cause by not fielding their own candidates.

Dr Mumba said this will enhance the already good relations that exist amongst the opposition political parties.

He said the MMD’s support for the UPND in both Chongwe and Livingstone is symbolic of the party’s commitment to strengthening opposition bonds and co-operation.

Dr Mumba stated that the future holds great opportunities for the opposition.

The Mufumbwe parliamentary seat fell vacant after the resignation of former Member of Parliament Stephen Masumba from the MMD to join the ruling Patriotic Front.

Meanwhile, Former MMD Mufumbwe Constituency Member of Parliament Stephen Masunba has refuted allegations that he has started campaigning in Mufumbwe ahead of the November 6 parliamentary by elections.

Mr. Masumba described the accusation as false and a sign of desperation from the opposition political parties who he accused of peddling blatant lies against him.

Speaking to ZANIS in a telephone interview in Lusaka today, the former parliamentarian said he was not in Mufumbwe but in Lusaka waiting for the commencement of official campaigns which is slated for October 11, 2012.

Mr. Masumba wondered why the opposition was fond of always crying foul and advised them to stop peddling unfounded speculations which he said do not help them.

He challenged those accusing him of campaigning in Mfumbwe to go and check for him at his house in Lusaka where he is currently staying and prove that he was not in Mufumbwe constituency as alleged.

He stated that there is no way he can start campaigns before the official date set by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).

Mr. Masumba also refuted allegations that his campaign team in the area was dishing out money and Chitenge materials at Katumba in Kizela, Tandiza and Chawama areas.

Some opposition political parties accused Mr. Masumba of having started campaigning publicly in the area when the official period is only from 11thOctober, 2012.

  1. I have said it before. Mufumbwe is a test of honour or otherwise for the UPND and HH in particular. Mufumbwe could define or reveal the character of HH, If he is willing to throw honour to the winds to gain just another MP, then I submit that he is not worthy of a vote for president of Zambia. For what manner of a friend would you have who at the slightest opportunity will stab you in the back of get ahead. HH, dont be greedy. Let MMD contest this seat and you will get the benefit of doubt from those who mistrust you for being power hungry and willing to do anything to get to plot one. Mark my words, HH. If you contest Mufumbwe, you will lose more votes countrywide from the hollow victory you will record. Mufumbwe will only confirm one thing: CAN ZAMBIA TRUST HH and UPND.

  2. This vacant seat must be taken by UPND. mmd is marubbish. pipo go forward go HH. Nevers and mmd have a very bad name in north western province.

  3. Now we yet to hear from UPND, are they going to support MMD? Please wait and see as willy Banda and Lufwenkelo advice HH and UPND. But I would like all the opposition to contest so we know is great. The way PF and UPND sorted each other in the last election and PF was proved popular.

  4. Ba opposition crying foul even before the game commenses. Just mourn your parties disintegration due to lack of trust among your selves. MMD and UPND working together – ?
Masumba mwaiche – show them. Next its Mchuma on the line to resign. Great and courageous MP from North western. Twalumba!

  5. for discipline and future control, let the country discipline the masumba guy. let MMD retain the seat, to teach these people never to take people for granted. th e way chimumbwa was done in chingburg

  6. #6 you are a liar,MMD is liked by Pipo in Northwestern,MMD redeemed N/W power in the mining Sector,am not MMD but that’s the trueth,PF is not sincere to the pipo of N/W,all our money is going somewhere else, opening Universities ,developing New provinces and Districts,if the Booming Mining activities were in Northern or Luapula it would have been something else.At one ceremony I attended in N/W ,No Development promises were made by Guy scott.
Masumba may win because of No credible challenger. He has 60% chances of winning.

  7. From the word go make it clear who is going to lead the packed between MMD and UPND just to avoid those confussions that arose between PF and UPND packed. let supporters also be involved and access whether these packed is worth it to continue or not before it is too late.We have learnt a big lesson before and we dont want to be fooled twice, please things has to be clear from the beging between MMD and UPND, after all Mufumbwe is a strong hold of UPND and you just wasting the chances just like that by giving PF because MMD will not win.
