Police in battle with Serenje community wanting to inflict instance justice on four suspects

Share

Police in Serenje today fought running battles with the community who besieged the police station demanding mob justice on four suspects believed to have murdered a taxi driver.

The four suspects, who were nabbed last night, are believed to have brutally murdered Gideon Kunda, 22, in Mbaswa area on Saturday night after booking him and fled with his Toyota Sprinter, registration number ACR 6354.

District Commissioner, Charles Mwelwa, who confirmed the incident to ZANIS in a telephone interview today, said the death of Kunda has caused commotion in the Boma as the irate community members have gone amok burning tires and breaking buildings as they demand to deal with the suspects themselves and instantly.

Mr Mwelwa explained that by press time, police were still engaged in running battles and firing tear gas canisters in trying to disperse the irate community members who are also pressurising to release the suspects to them.

He further said the situation was tense as nearly everyone is annoyed by the death of Kunda and people want to take the law into their own hands.

Mr Mwelwa added that business had come to a halt as no one following the fracas characterised by the unusual confusion characterised by chocking smoke from tear gas canisters.

And Central Province Police Deputy Commissioner, Nelson Phiri, confirmed the murder of Kunda and arrest of his four suspected murderers, adding that the killers also set his body ablaze before they drove away in his car.

Mr Phiri said Kunda’s charred remains are lying in Serenje district hospital mortuary.

  1. Very sad,Lawlessness in slowly creeping into zambia. We wil all be armed with Pistols for safe defence. Its too much of criminals wanting to reap where they didnt sow any seed.

Wait,my Pistol is being cleared & once I have it—its 50-50 with criminals.

  2. If the police are not doing there job, let the mob do it….its even faster no adjournment of cases. its decided in minutes, no proof, no witnesses, no bail.

  3. The police, the court system, prosecution etc are all fake. Just let the residents mete out the instant justice, sharia law the Zedian way! An eye for an eye, period.

    • The “suspect”? And what happens if the suspect or suspects are innocent? Is the possibility of additional innocent deaths not enough to keep you from demanding revenge?

  4. MwebakwiLala, i will never go to the village. Mwaamba ukupayana bamboswa? Wapi Bamfumu nemo tankeseko. Mungandaishako bwaka tufishimu natu malemba kubakoisa kumigoti…. hihihihihiii

  5. A sensless murder like this one where the victims’ body is even burnt can make the peoples’ blood boil. These are the kind of murders that have made majority of people submitting to the constitution review recommend that we maintain the death penalty. The likes of these 4 are psycho-narcissists who should permanently be removed from society. I am 100% sure that these thieves would be burnt alive if not for the police. Kumda – MHSRIP!

  6. Why are criminals going to that extent in Central & CB provinces,i mean there should be honour even among criminals! I think the public is right to demad for their blood, you just cant burn somedody over a second hand Japanese reck!

  8. Sometimes, one cannot blame the community for baying for the blood of such inhuman and merciless killers. It becomes worrisome when such crimes begin rearing their ugly heads in rural areas. It pains me more so that I hail from Serenje. However, I appeal to our law enforcement agents to observe the unfamiliar trends of crime and come up with strategies.

  9. This criminals are been assisted by getting ak s pistols by the same people we put our trust in what a shame and what a country of lawlessness we need sharia law to prevail

  10. Violence only begets more violence and leads to a further loss of respect for human life. The murder of Mr. Kunda was brutal, but mob justice will only lead to more deaths. People who are going to kill are not deterred by the death penalty, or by the thought of vigilante justice. But a society where no murders are tolerated (whether committed by individuals, by mobs or by the State), and other forms of justice exist that don’t violate human rights, tend to be more stable, peaceful societies.

  11. Sad.. unfortunately people once made mistake by demanding for Jesus and saved the criminal Barabas.
If I was in Serenje I could have been with the people and not police, they even failed to arrest the Maikoni brothers. ZP protects criminals from people.
