Vice President Guy Scott says there is nothing wrong for the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) to form a company.
ZANIS reports that Dr. Scott said in Parliament today that all past ruling parties had companies which they were running to raise funds.
Dr. Scott said UNIP and the MMD had companies which they ran and that PF’s Ilunda Chalo Investment was one just like those.
He stressed that the company was formed in good faith to help the party raise funds for its operations.
“This is not the first time a political party in Zambia has ever established and formed a firm. UNIP and MMD had theirs and there is nothing sinister for PF to form Ilunda Chalo Investment,” Dr. Scott said.
He cited that MMD run MOFED, private firm which it run for many years as an example.
Dr. Scott, who is also Lusaka Central Member of Parliament (MP), dismissed assertions that the PF was likely to embezzle government funds to pump into the company.
The Vice President was responding to a question by MMD Mafinga MP, Catherine Namugala who allegedly accused the PF of forming a company to siphon money from Government coffers to fund its operations.
This was during the 30-minute Vice President’s question time in Parliament.
PF General Secretary Winter Kabimba this week clarified that the Ilunda Chalo Investment would partner with individuals and other companies to invest in areas such as mining, agriculture, tourism, infrastructure development, consultancy and many other areas to raise resources for the ruling party, PF.
And Dr. Scott has disclosed that Government is the process of engaging an investor to take over the running of Kawambwa Tea Company in Kawambwa District in Luapula province.
The Vice President said the named investor would be engaged on a 10-year period.
Dr. Scott said Government is not aware of the repossession of the Factory from a named Zimbabwean firm but stated that Government is saddened by the fact that the company has not paid its workers wages for one-year.
Dr. Scott was responding to a question raised by PF Lupososhi MP Bwalya Chungu who wanted to know whether or not government wanted to repossess the firm to protect the workers from untold misery.

It seems these companies owned by political parties are only successful when the owners are in power as they don’t have a sustainable business model. With Willie as RDA Chairman and everything moved to State House this company’s in-tray will be overflowing with gov’t tenders.

All these areas have some connection with govt. They hve suspended oil exploration so that they get give the licenses to they company as well as individual companies such as the one formed by Winter. Now PF is involved in everything – first its the PIG, second it established an NGO & now it has formed a company. These guys what to use all the tricks they have learnt from 1964 to date to steal money. What hurts me is that I genuinely believed Sata could make a difference, but to see this?
Now the promise is more money if PF’s bank account not our pocket and I am very sure that money will end up in the pockets of PF leaders. No goverment, parastatal or government agency contracts for this business. Otherwise it will be un-ethical and will palnt a seed of corruption among workers from such institutions. If ministers are awarding themselves contracts, it opens doors for employees from such institutions to be corrupt in thier dealings with company business.

MMD was in power for almost 20 years, how long did their company MOPED (not MOFED!) last?…very briefly indeed! When MMD realized it could not make money out of MOPED, they transferred its General Manager, one dubious character and well known political prostitute called Teddy Mulonga to the Tender Board! (The chap was a former UNIP cadre, (Timothy Kankasa’s nephew) later MMD cadre, latter FDD cadre, later UPND cadre, later again MMD cadre under RB and lately fired PF cadre at Cabinet Office!) You don’t need to be a genius to guess why they sent Teddy there!…Before he was fired from Tender Board by Chiluba, there was a mysterious fire in which all the important files were “destroyed”. The “fire” only affected the Tender Board offices at Kulima Tower out of all the floors!

It is now clear why the president was all over Asia looking for investors for this company. PF is now breaking its Seven Commandments. Why do they compare themselves to the past Governments vices?
Parties in the US raise funds through donations by party members and wellwishers, and the parties are required by law to disclose the amounts raised for the sake of transparency. If a ruling party creates a commercial entity that would bid for contracts from both the private and public sector, then there is no level playing field because of government influence. This is a huge political blunder which raises serious questions about the ruling party’s sensitivity to ethical issues.
If political parties cant form companies then how do they raise funds for their operations?Of cause if they are in government they will do the obvious of stealing from the state.Only the constitution can clarify these questions but i guess for now they have taken advantage of these loopholes but the question Zambians should ask is is Pf a Bemba party?From the name of the company and all their major appointments it is obvious pf is indeed a bemba party and a bemba government.Time will tell.GOD BLESS ZAMBIA.
Dr. Scott, yes there is nothing wrong with PF forming a party, the only problem is that these guys corrupt as they are they will siphony all the state resources through all the dubious tricks in the book. Examining the PF party from top to bottom all these guys have done is too sing the “anticorruption” so loudly that they now think everyone is deaf and blind so they started stealing even before they finnished singing their “anticorruption” song. Now the calibre of these leaders starting with SATA himself it is inconceivable that the company will be clean. If they were smart enouph they should have formed parastals so that all zambians can benefit from the employment. as it is the co. will obviously employ cadres (PF) at the tax payers expense- give us a break.
This is just a disguised plan to steal the tax payer’s money. Shame on you PF!
