Minister of Health Joseph Kasonde has disclosed that the health sector needs over 25,700 medical personnel for it to meet the required capacity in the country.

Dr. Kasonde said the Ministry of Health was currently operating at 56 per cent of its capacity and still has a huge task of addressing the current deficit of health workers in the country.

He was speaking today at the 29th graduation ceremony of 264 students from Chainama College of Health Sciences.

Dr. Kasonde said there was need for increased production of trained health workers to meet the increased demand of health services.

He however reiterated government‘s commitment to achieving universal access to quality health care for all and has since called for increased training in the health sector.

He noted that his ministry has also embarked on strategies to reduce staff debt owed to the current health workers in form of salary arrears and retention allowances which are aimed at motivating the workers.

Dr. Kasonde has also urged the grandaunts to strive to apply the principles that they have learnt and observe professionalism to improve health care delivery in the country.

And University of Zambia Vice Chancellor Stephen Samukanga said education plays a vital role in the attainment of economic development in every country.

In a speech read on his behalf by Chainama College Dean of Students in the School of Medicine Faston Ngoma, Professor Samukanga appealed to government and other stakeholders for increased financial support to the college.

  3. Improve the conditions of service if you want to attract us,otherwise you risk losing even the few that you have.I am told bemba is the main language at one of the the biggest hospitals in Botswana coz more than a third of the medical personnel happens to be Zambians. What a shame.

  4. It will take over two years for these new medical personel to be put on the payrol. Coming to think of it, there is no problem of unemployment in this country because the gorvernment can simply start training 50,000 medical personel today on loan. Put machanism to insure that these people pay back over a period and do not leave the country.

  5. sorry I left the country.I never thought i would be part of brain drain but I was over worked under appreciated and was tires of poverty.Don’t worry in 20 yrs time I will build a hospital for my beloved Zambia.

  6. Ok your point being what? We know where these health workers went. Is your ministry doing anything to intice them to come back? Until you have an answer I suggest, you keep quiet!

  7. Tisiliza this year! Tipaseni ncito next year. All of us friends graduating this year pliz let’s pay back to the people of zambia! We owe them everything

It is either the Minister is too incompetent or drunk with power and thinks the Zambians are morons Zambia needs more than 60,000 medical personnel and the Ministry of health is operating at 25% the current deficit of health workers in the Country is a national disaster. The Minister is not in touch with facts failed leadership

  9. Its actually not easy to leave zambia even if you have qualifications, it usually takes several years of persistent trying, so this tells you how BAD things actually are in zambia. Why do people think healthcare will improve with more numbers? IT WONT ! These leaders are dull and have no concept of efficiency of a system. One muzungu boy here is more efficient than 20 of those doctors at UTH (thats a fact!) not because they are more intelligent or have more energy or patriotism but because of the super efficient system they have been set up with . now stop thinking like fcking i d i o t s and GET SERIOUS.

  10. Talk about other professions as well, shortages are evrywhere noti lyonse talking about one sector!!! Its not FAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Govt should stop training clinical officers as they are undermined by doctors. They have been blocked in there progression ladder. So why not concentrate in training only doctors, nurses and environmental officers.

  12. Its funny to see that number coz (graduates) paramedics are not yet employed.action speaks louder than words.
