Government has refuted allegations that it is dragging Former Republican President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda into partisan politics.
Speaking to ZANIS in an interview today, Chief Government Spokesperson Kennedy Sakeni said government holds Dr. Kaunda in high esteem, as he is a father of the nation, and can never drag him into politics.
Mr. Sakeni said the defection of former Mines Deputy Minister Jazzman Chikwakwa from the Movement for Multi Party Democracy(MMD) to the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) while at the residence of the Former Head of State is a mere coincidence that should not be misinterpreted by anyone.
He stated that Mr. Chikwakwa is a free citizen, who is at liberty to belong to any political party, adding that there was nothing wrong with his decision to defect to the PF while visiting Dr. Kaunda.
Mr. Sakeni who is also Information and Broadcasting Minister added that government has great respect for Dr. Kaunda’s private and public life.
He was reacting to allegations from some sections of society alleging that government was forcing Former Republican President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda to engage in partisan politics.
The allegations were sparked after Former Mines Deputy Minster Jazzman Chikwakwa ,along with MMD founding member Christopher Ngoma defected to the ruling PF while at Dr. Kaunda’s residence on Wednesday last week.

Can someone define active politics? is Bill clinton in active politics since he helped campaign for Obama? Is Mandela in active politics since he sends goodwill messages everytime ANC is having its elections? “active politics” is simply being involved in “influential politics” for the benefit of a political party that one is affiliated to. You ask of Bill Clinton and Mandela being in “active politics”. No they are not. They are affiliated to their respective political parties and as “citizens” they can support and belong to a party but not “active”. RB can endorse and support MMD candidates and offer counsel to members and even appear at MMD functions but cannot be seen to receiving political cadres on behalf of UPND. Remember, Kaunda was UNIP….

Mr Sekani, who arranged for the media? And I can’t imagine that such defections at that level would take place without “discusstions” at the PF top level. Clearly it was staged and we all know it. KK must be losing it and should be asked to reconsider his retirement benefits if he is to “house” the PF secretariat and receive political prostitutes.
Was KK not sent to Asia by Sata ? Was he not in a chopper that went for that failed mission to commission a road? Pls spares us some dignity for God’s sake.
If Jazzman decided to defect while at KK’s house, he should have been wise enough to defer his announcement if he understands that KK has to be non partisan by law.
