Rainford Kalaba and Stopilla Sunzu left Accra very disappointed after a shock loss for the 2012 African-based player award.

Egyptian Mohamed Aboutreika who failed for a second successive to inspire Egypt to the Africa Cup instead won the award.

The Al Ahly playmaker took the award for guiding the team to the 2012 CAF Champions League.

However, Herve Renard took home the CAF coach of the year while his team won team of the year.

Yaya Toure won the African Footballer of the Year to win back-to-back honours, an award Christopher Katongo was snubbed for in the final shortlist.

  1. If or since the team and the coach won their respective awards,  all our boys should know Africa has honoured them; and none of them have been snubbed.

  2. CAF and FIFA are fake. They have dribbled us again. I can only respect them if it goes like this;
For 2013 confederation cup let Zambia AFCON 2012 champions play with AFCON 2013 champions and not AFCON 2013 champions to automatically go to Brazil easily because Zambia is the right nation to represent Africa with full sweat.
K & S you are still young for more honors just accept the result as i knew it already.

  3. How does CAF deny Kalaba and Sunzu glory…please Times Of Zambia and Kalusha stop these lies and causing trouble; they were nominated it does mean they were going fly back with awards. This article was written by a drunk immature football fan not a professional sports journalist as it lacks objectivity.
The coach won CAF coach of the year whilst our team won team of the year that should have been the main headline.

    • i totally agree.,,,,but as you know zambian’s tiza pempa olo palibe,,after being fed, we still gonna bite someones fingers off

  4. Somethings is better just to stay away, fyaba nabene.
Singuluma is smart, he knows that he will not be used by Renard, so why take yourself there?

  5. Kanshi mwebantu whats wrong with caf? a bunch of useless chaps, here are the facts, egypt failed to even qualify, kalaba and sunzu for goodness sake won the africa cup, and helped tp mazembe to the semi final,, and mazembe  only lost because their infleuntial midfielder, who else? kalaba was injured.if he had played in the second leg the results may have been different. But then we know caf is full of west africans and north africas, and their choices reflect in the people who win these awards.

  6. Last night, I realized how foolish an African can be ( by the way, am not generalizing but using the phrase to make a point). How does the Confederation of African Football (CAF) name Yaya Toure as African Footballer of the Year based on the facts that he helped Ivory Coast reach the finals of the AFCON 2012 and most importantly helped Man City win the EPL and Charity Shield? What a shame! Does Hayatou realize that he runs a confederation of AFRICAN football? We are talking about AFRICAN FOOTBALL.
What is so African about the English Premier League and Charity Shield? Even if you are an African footballer and are doing well in Europe, it doesn’t qualify you to be even nominated for this award because that is not African football.

  7. CAF is for the french-speaking countries and not for us. so many decisions have gone against us; they said prize money 4 AFCON was $2m coz they thought Ivory Coast would win, when we won, they reduced it to $1m. as winners of AFCON we were supposed to play in Brazil for the curtain raiser tournament for world cup, but they say it is the winner of 2013 AFCON, etc Anyway, we are to blame coz we do not want to infiltrate international organizations, we always want to stay home.

  8. CAF is full of western Africans that’s why they don’t wanna respect other African nations with football talents other than western Africans who seem to have more access to play in European leagues. CAF are bunch of *****s anyway.

  9. Now CAF have proved my point. I been saying CAF is an organisation run by colonial minded people in the name of Hayatou and the like, HOW CAN AFRICAN FOOTBALL BE ANALYSED IN THE CONTEXT OF OR IN CONJUCTION WITH THE ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE?

My humble contribution is that let us divide the CAF into two factions i.e North and South, where the respective factions play among themselves and the best four teams from each faction proceeds to the quarter finals. These finals should be played in a country not amongst the final 8, BUT organised and handled by FIFA with both CAF factions as mere spectators. That way, peharps we could see some degree of fairness in African football.

  10. Caf is always difficult to understand. Why Yaya Toure instead of Didier Drogba who won the Eurepean champions league and worst still why not a Zambian who won the Afcon? Then why hold Afcon every two years instead of every four years? Why the 2012 Afcon champions cant go to the confederations cup in Brazil? Why has Caf not recognised Ucar’s 107 goals?I rest my case.GOD BLESS ZAMBIA.

  11. Is everything going to be for Zambians now, since PF came into power?
    – Yesterday was 107 goals demand
    – Katongo demand;s that he the best of all
    – Even TAZARA ati yesu
What kind of selfishness is this, are we in Northern Rhodesia?

  12. Big up to the boys i have been wondering why alex song who never qualified his team to the AFCON 2012, had a bad season at arsenal, has failed to qualify his team to AFCON 2013 and has no game time at barca would be chosen ahead of our own legend Chris (sunami) Katongo surely CAF are still under the colonial masters.

  13. Winners are chosen by African team coaches or football association heads. Caf has nothing to do with this other than compiling results. Well done boys and continue doing your best.

  14. @tusebanyeni CAF knows that West Africa has more team coaches and associations than southern africa. West Africans are very good “dribblers” and are known globally for their mischief. It is surprising that even Renard won.

    • Renard won because he is French. Francophone Africa still worship their colonisers. Go to any French speaking country in Central or West Africa and you will be surprised with what you’ll find: milk, bottled water, chicken, potatoes, beef etc all imported from France! A recent study bemoaned the fact that the current economic growth in Africa is bypassing Francophone Africa. The growth is happening in English and Portuguese speaking countries. This has been attributed to Francophone Africa’s unwillingness to cut its umbilical cord with France.

  15. its really surprising reading most of the comments here!….guys learn to be thankful, all these comments are the hubris of the defeated…its just 5 years ago that we couldn’t win all these things! now we want it all, including the 107 goals which should have been fought for years ago!..if Yaya toure doesn’t deserve it, why is he the backbone of one of the biggest clubs in the world, which competes in one of the most competitive leagues, it is the moment when we realize some of these facts that even as a nation we will improve, Kalaba and sunza should not be disappointed, they should go back to the drawing board and see how they can get better, instead from wanting to jump from Zero to hero!..someone will insult me for this comment, yet another set of evidence why Africa is this way.

    • PF came into power saying more money in your pockets, did you ever ask yourselves how this money will land into your pocket? ofcourse not, same here, did you ever consider why Yaya is the African player of the year? ofcourse not, people just jumped into the sky claiming its a Zambian who deserves the award…shame…

    • so what is wrong with claiming every prize whilst we are at our peak? you are simply a low achiever who lacks ambition and you are a shame to our country.
you also misinformed; CAF told us that the winning bonus was $2m but they reduced to $1M after we won. you assessed Yaya by watching TV but you never assessed Sunzu & Kalaba as they are not always playing on TV, so how do you compare their performance.

    • @achiever
Why didn’t your FAZ complain about the winnings? You are quick to point fingers at others yet your house is a mess…

  16. Let them take the award, we shall meet at the AFCON 2013 and heads will role. Let this disappointment be a motivation to our young boys, so that we show them for the 2nd time who we really. CHIPOLOPOLO!!!!

  17. Even if ni patriotism, you cannot compare Katongo to Yaya Toure. Remember this is footballer of the year and not footballer of the tournament. The tournament is only what, six games played over a month? You cannot be footballer of the year baseed on that alone. It has to be an all year performance. Katongo plays in the Chinese league and his team was relegated! that says a lot.

    • You can be in a team that is relegated but you still win a prize. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank emerged as top scorer of la liga despite Athletico Madrid being relegated. However, Zambians play in leagues that are not televised but Yaya is always seen, so poor the Zambians cannot get the votes. the lesson is, let our players work hard and go to bigger leagues.

  18. Our Renard won that award because of too much pressure on CAF as regards their inefficiencies and rotten decisions. Otherwise that award in CAF’s view could even been given to any coach in west or north Africa dead or living. SHAME CAF DUNDERHEADS.

  19. The catch-word here iz just to win, win, win, win, win, win and win! Then “somebody” will be left with no choice, but to recognize Zambian playerz az performrrz.

  20. Don’t be bad losers. You can’t compare Sunzu and Kalaba to Yaya Toure – he is just too good. It is cheap and shabby to always cry like children when other deserving players in Africa win awards. Winning the AFCON does not mean you win all the awards. Prove yourself by retaining the AFCON cup, may be then Sunzu and Kalaba will win. Stop being childish and grow up. The tornament is coming again in just a few weeks, that’s where to go and prove them wrong…not just by crying foul and insulting other people. In many words, by insulting like this you are proving why the award was not given to our Zambian players. Immaturity…

  21. THE JUST ENDED TITLES WERE SUNZU AND KALABA CAME EMPTY HANDED ARE DETERMINED BY OTHERS. OUR BOYS WILL BE TAKING TROPHIES BY WINNING ON THE PITCH. LET THEM TAKE THE TROPHIES ACCORDING TO WHAT THEY DECIDE. REMEMBER VOTERS FOR SUCH ACCOLADES ARE USUALLY COACHES AND JOURNALIST. WITH TWO BOYS FROM THE ZAMBIAN CAMP IT WAS DOOM FROM THE WORD GO, THEIR VOTE WAS SPLIT ALREADY.
LET US JUST ENCOURAGE THEM TO CONTINUE SHAMING THE WEST AFRICAN DEVILS ON THE PITCH.

  22. #33  you just SHUT UP !!!!   and never call Zambia bad losers, we will never be Losers.CAF is governed by west Africa and they influence the flow of their players to big european clubs,so try to think with your head for once..Imbecile!!!

  23. Funny how you insult the CAF president today yet your FAZ and the African FAs have let him stand unopposed and unchallenged like your Kalu was at the last FAZ elections…you complain about the reduced AFCON winnings yet your selfsame corrupt FAZ didn’t complain or protest to FAZ. Lets learn to be objective…

  24. In my homeland South Africa we win very few continental awards yet we are proud of our players…..football is played on the pitch and not by a vote of a few people. They world saw Zambian players are the best in Africa, so whether they vote for kalaba, Toure or whoever the fact still remains Chipolopolo is the real Bullet and we love them and celebrate the beautiful game with you once more in January at home in SA.

  25. Stopilla Sunzu announced as African Player of the year (playing in Africa). Towards the end of the show the MC’s came back onot the stage to apologise that they had made a mistake that the winner is Abroutrika.
“It seems like a conspiracy!!! ” said a highly upset Kalusha Bwalya. (Source: FAZ FB page).

  26. And you insult me every time I call these leaders in Football House empty suits. How can he be upset and be making such statements yet he is part of the whole stinking corrupt system which he tolerates and practices.
    Wake up people!!

  27. Please guys.the fact that Suzu and Kalaba were nominated meant that they divided the votes among themselves and lost. Kalaba came second and sunzy third.Even coach Reinard was at a loss who to vote for. There was a need to have a system to nominate only one from our country Zambia
    or southern and Central Africa

  28. Bonse apa mulepanga fye ichongo, I don’t even know amalilo nga yabelele pesa. Ine pantu njishibe ukuti Sunzu Stophila is the African home based player of the year. This has been corrected and confirmed by FAZ on its fb page. We have three awards plus iyakwa Katongo makes it 4 this year. This for me is great achievement.
Problem imwe you want everything to come to Zambia, awe bane ukuitemwa tekusuma!!! Ale come on sakamaneni uku supporter ba Zambia as they prepare for 2013 AFCON finals billed for S.Africa mu 2013. Stop complaining or else nalamulopaula pano. Ala imwe!!!!!!!!

    • In fact its the other way round. Aboutrika wins after CAF officials behind the scenes discuss and resolve to rob Sunzu………….However aya te malilo bane natuwina sana fyonse ifi fitatu fingi this year for one country. Namumonapo ba Sychelles nangu ba Angola apa……Tasheni fye…
