Pope Benedict XVI will resign on February 28, citing his deteriorating strength, the Vatican said today.

In a statement posted on Vatican Radio’s website Monday, the 85-year-old Pope said his health was the reason for the surprise announcement.

“After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry,” he told the cardinals.

“I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only by words and deeds but no less with prayer and suffering.”

Benedict said his strength, over the last few months, “has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me.”

He will be the first pontiff to resign in 600 years. The last resignation was by Pope Gregory XII in 1415.

There will be no pontiff until a successor is picked, the Vatican said.

Benedict was chosen Pope by cardinals on April 19, 2005, following the very popular Pope John Paul II.

The Italian news agency ANSA first reported the news, which it said was made in Latin during a meeting of cardinals in Rome.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger became Pope in 2005 after the death of John Paul II.

Pope Benedict XVI is 85 years old.

  1. He is a human being, like you and me, so whats the big deal?. Those who believe the Pope is God are imagining.

    • We are not Zimbos! Mugabe is not our problem! He is not the one who’s turned Our State House into a Hospice! The last two Colonial Governor’s Sir Evelyn Hone and Mr Roy Welensky must be turning in their graves at seeing what has become of the Colonial Governor’s mansion! Just the thought that the current occupant was a Kapaso!

    • I agree with you. Sata has been advised to take it easy for his own good. He should spare himself from all the agro happening in the country and PF. it will too much for him. Even these trans atlantic trips are too much for him. He does not have the stamina or the strength to carry on as Presido. I mean no malice or offence about my comment just concerned that he is taking on too much.

    • Goncalves, in case you do not know most KAPASOS MORE INTELLIGENT WISER and smarter than you are. The fact that he has not remained a Kapaso speaks volumes about his worth and intelligence. Im sure every intelligence person should admire that kind of intelligence. ITHINK YOU ARE ENVIOUS OF THE MAN. I suggest you emulate him

  2. Only if my hubby can emulate the pope ,swallow his small Bemba pride and do the right thing to step down before be destroys what LMP and RB including FTJ worked tirelessly for.He man is fading fast like the Rebased Kwacha notes, awe nachula kulibashikulu !

  3. The church still stands. And Now jesus christ has taken the wheel. So wayikatako wapya.. Touch not the annointed one of God.

  4. He looks so frail, even the time they picked him! Better enjoy your last two years on earth quietly, the man is too oldd, even our president looks 20years younger than him.I wonder how he read all the files or they read for him, he just approved by nodding his head like “eeehhe nifyofinemukwayi, nomba nsheni ntushe, iwe kampenga leta cheese na wine nweko mwe”. hehehehhehehehehe!

    • Ninshi mwatemenwa uku landila pali bashinwe baba nenu ngani bashinwe teti mulandepo. ukuti mulelyafye mwatosola notufumo kwati ni bacula.Ba sata na Popo bushe cimocine bati?

  5. so strange! anyhow the pope has made that decision in complete freedom, better that way than doing something out of duty and not love!

  6. Very wise of you Pontiff. You will remain a vanguard, even in retirememt. In Zambia, even when it is statutory to retire at a given age, we still want to cling to posotions, much against public interests.

    • freemasons never resign. they are under oath not to resign lest they reveal stupid secrets they habour.
if one tries, he is eliminated, PERIOD!

  7. Dear Zambians,

If you have ears listen, and listen carefully.
First of all this story shouldn’t be getting so much coverage. It’s of no interest to the majority of unless you are Catholic

This has been coming over suspicions that have grown overwhelming….

For your own information Popes just don’t do this. Deeply cynical I’m afraid..

Hope now prosecution follows over the pedophile cover ups this man has presided
over. Watch this space for more disclosures.

    Thanks

  8. I hope now that new pope dedicates himself to being a moral and humanitarian campaigner. He should confront corruption and dictatorships and poverty, he should be in the news all the time demanding the world improve itself, that is what his religion says and that is what he should represent. The church should be a faith and not a company or organisation obsessed with procedure and finance
Above all the Church should resign immediately morality comes into questions

    This is one sad ending

Bishop Milingo should throw his hat in the ring, as a British Zambian I shall support him

    Thanks

  9. Ha ha ha ati Kampenga leta cheese na wine nwe ko.. you guys are funny. Any way after the 28th of February there will be what we call the vacancy of the holy sea! What ever the reasons maybe the holy one is right to step down to allow younger and stronger people to take over. May God bless Joseph Ratzinger.

  10. Stop talking about the Pope! Concentrate on Bishop Mambo, Bishop Imakando, Apostle Pule, Rev Nevers Mumba and the like. You are not fit to carry the Pope’s sandals!!

  11. could this be related ton the issue of the butler who stole his private correspondence and claimed he was doing so to protect the faith?? What was in those private correspondence, will history students later, get more details as to the actual reasons of this papal resignation???

  12. iwe ka mushota for the first time you have used the word British Zambian.
So you are proud of Zamba after all.Uleichindika and you will get some respect.
Umawiche Emilly Sande has Zambian blood from his father Joe Sande ,but she is
very proud of having a Zambain father.

  13. I thought it was Sata who is supposed to resign because of old age, deteriorating health and open plundery of the economy with his Bemba croons.

  14. Who cares about that criminal organisation in Vatican city? When are we going to wake up to the fact that these religions are not for us the Nubian people. We had a Nubian culture we don’t need to be enslaved by this business empire. Poppy can go to hell!

  15. Most brainwashed African sheep don’t know that the Vatican is one of the biggest business enterprise out there investing in those mines that rape you everyday. I’m a Nubian and will never attach myself to any white man’s faith blindly.

  16. The great Steve Biko pointed out the fundamental reason why imperialists make a point of converting their victims to their Christian religion when he said: It has always been the pattern throughout history that whosoever brings the new order knows it best and is therefore the perpetual teacher of those to whom the new order is being brought. If the white missionaries were “right” about their God in the eyes of the people, then the African people could only accept whatever these new know-all tutors had to say about life. The acceptance of the colonialist-tainted version of Christianity marked the turning point in the resistance of African people.

  17. The European hegemonic establishment must project false INJURIOUS IDEOLOGIES that are accepted by its VICTIMS. It must project self-serving IDEOLOGIES that are seen as givens, as natural. It must project FRAUDULENT IDEOLOGIES that are seen as not SUBJECT TO QUESTION. When the VICTIMS of European Imperialistic Domination accept its ideologies uncritically, they then accept rulership and dominance of the imperialistic European. They then begin to IDENTITY with the very group that is responsible for THEIR PROBLEMS. – Dr. Amos Wilson

    • we have been through this many a time. just come to the point.
what do you want us to do?
embrace our stone age culture/ ideologies, if any, or move on with this culture you are condemning.
if yes, lets put it to a vote on this blog and see who will say yes to your proposal.

    • Religion is the organization of spirituality into something that became the hand maiden of conquerors. Nearly all religions were brought to people and imposed on people by conquerors, and used as the framework to control their minds.

  18. To emerge in this 21st century, Africa does not need God or a re-invasion by missionaries. Africa needs the Good. Africa needs good governance, good infrastructure, good roads, good schools, college, and universities. Africans need a sound education and training system that would make them to think, create, criticise debate, invent, and innovate freely. As Francis Bacon said, knowledge is power. Africans need an educational programme that empowers them to discover, express and actualise their potential. Africa needs freedom. And this includes free mind, free society, free speech, free will, free expression of intelligence and free choice. Africa does not need a religion that shackles their minds and chains the intelligence. Africans need to rediscover and restore their humanity and human…

    • even pagans acknowledge that missionaries brought civilisation in africa.
why turn a blind eye to the obvious now that you are able to articulate issues in a more civilised manner because of the education brought to africa by the imperialist. why have you opted to copy their language if they are good for nothing?
the problem of us africans is not the musungu per say, but our own failure to govern ourselves. examles are there for all to see. even here in zambia and on this blog, just read through all the postings and you will be able to appreciate the reason why we cannot develop. hatred and jealous
even simple tribal rifts that can be solved amica by ourselves degenerate into wars and you blame that on imperialists. no my brother some of these things that retard progress are self…

    • …… inflicted due to our own greed. we do not surport ourselves in everything that we do.
our upbringing has always been that of competition.

  19. Know what? Though the road taken by the Pope is radical departure from precedent, I can name several of our Zambian politicians who should follow his example for similar reasons.Below is the list:

  20. It takes a smart man to run a big business, it takes an even bigger man to know when to quit.African politicians- let this be an example for you.I suddenly have a little more respect for this guy. It is not unusual for Popes, African Politicians, etc, to get too old to carry out their duties; it is rare for one of these guys to recognize this and step down so someone in better shape can take his place. The Pope has the presence of mind to know he is no longer up to the job, good for him! Moreover,he’s 85 years old, that’s enough reason to want to retire!
(MAY THE GOOD SAMARITAN PASS MY POSTING TO SATA AND MUGABE,PLEASE.NOW LOOK AT THAT GOOFY PF’S FACE!)

  21. Oh,how i wish it was chi Sata resigning it would have been a great relief. I would have gone to my favorite pub on Rodeo Drive to drink and make merry.Sobbing like crazy.

  22. Please ci Satana emulate ba shifwe papa ,resign uli cikote citata iwe and you re sick.Am sure u were given pethidine plus plus plus atropine to suck up secretions na mafina.Hear you drank fi caffeine .Resign muli nkotizo tata

  23. This is what this ***** in State house should also do. But looking at the manner he is sacrificing innocent blood one can be rest assured that he would not do such a honorable thing

  24. The resignation is welcome. Yesterday I took three hours reading his biography as a priest. I was stunned to discover on Google that they describe his life as a paradox. He didn’t achieve what he wanted to do.
The church wanted to evangelise the world but instead it was embroileded in sexual scandals.
He is described as a timid pope.

  26. If you’re hypertensive, your doctor might recommend a 24 hours monitoring with the use of the machine. That’s about 40 readings, that’s why you want something that lasts longer than 24 hours. Check the machines’ battery time and save yourself a lot of time and money. Take the ones that goes off after 400 or more readings.
