Kabompo District commissioner, Dennis Kanyakula has called on Antelope and Olympic Milling companies to open depots in the newly created Manyinga district to avert mealie meal shortage that has hit the two districts.
Mr. Kanyakula said there is a shortage of mealie meal stocks in Kabompo and Manyinga districts for a week now and the situation is getting out of hand.
Mr Kanyakula said this in an interview with ZANIS in Kabompo today.
According to a random survey by ZANIS, people in the two districts have resorted to buying maize from unscrupulous grain dealers on the black market at KR 60 per 20 litre tin while a 50 kilogram bag of mealie meal is now selling at KR 180.
The Food Reserve Agency (FRA) off loaded 2000 by 50 kg bags of maize on the market to enable the people buy maize at KR 60 per bag last month which has also finished.
Mr Kanyakula described the situation is not good as people are made to scramble for the mealie meal wherever it is available.
The mealie meal shortage has resulted in the commodity being sold at KR 75 for a 25 kg bag instead of the government directive to sell a 25 kg bag at not more than KR50.
Mr Kanyakula has since urged the FRA to supply more maize on the market for people to buy and to revise the system of selling the commodity so that unscrupulous traders are curtailed from accessing as they are the ones reselling on the blackmail.

I know you are only trying to be funny but this is pathetic and childish.
Ati maccarolini…kekekekekekekekeke!!!! ya ba! you have cracked my ribs with laughter.
Let them eat cake!
Malinso,
Have you ever head of a menu? Not every word found in the menu is supposed to found in the English dictionary, this is the ZAMBIAN MENU, ask Zambians to explain it to you what mealie meal or infisashi means. I bet you don’t know that Macaroni is made from wheat! The world staple food is grain- wheat, rice, maize, sorghum, rye etc and foods made from these are called different names like bread and macaroni made from wheat which is a staple crop in these regions. In Zambia our staple crop is maize, so we make mealie meal or corn flour in other words and other products like cornflakes. If you are in America, why not ask for corn bread made from corn flour?
Some people are really ”Useful *****s” ! If people are strugling to buy a bag of m/meal what more rice, Maccaron etc which is pagging @ KR10 per 250g? And how many kg’s will someone with big family need? Use ur brains to think and not through ur ass…..!
This is Under-five Politics for National Destruction propaganda.
icipuba cenu ci MP where is it busy accepting ministerial Job bt cant deliver ,don’t cry for mealie meal u wanted PF muzaciona
Please please Govt take care of farmers otherwise we are in trouble next harvest time
They won’t be any maize and the millers will take advantage
Some foolish bemba friend taught me a foolish bemba proverb which is : ” amalibu ya kuilombela.” Do not misquote me. I did not say ” amapuli yakuilombela.” In the entire MMD reign Zambia never experienced maize meal shortage of this magnitude and its cocomitant high prices. We are seeing this for the first time in many years and this is happening albeit the bumper harvest of the last season. Can you imagine how the situation will be later this year in comfusion of in put distribution. But I feel sorry for the blind supporters of the PF who hoped that they would automatically have money in their pockets. The people who are comfortable are those in employment who unfortunately find do not vote much because they find voting needless.
