Share

A Ndola minibus overturned a few meters from the under bridge leaving eight passengers with minor injuries on Saturday.

The driver of minibus registration number ACJ 4030 who was found with opaque beer packs of shake shake lost control when he concentrated on taking the beer while driving at high speed. One of the passengers, Agness Mulenga of 455 Mine Masala who complained of a painful left ankle said, the driver was accosted by the passengers from taking the alcohol but he said being a weekend it was okay for him to do that.

“We actually condemned his beer drinking and asked him to stop but he was not interested with what we were saying and kept on telling us it’s a weekend and its okay” Ms Mulenga said.

Another passenger who sought anonymity said the driver started drinking in Chipulukusu where the bus was boarding from at a place called beach club. “The driver of the bus was taking shake shake when we were boarding and I thought he would leave the shake shake behind but to our surprise he carried it along with him when we started off,” he said.

When traffic officers arrived on the scene the driver identified as Winston Sichilongo of an unknown address of Chipulukusu ran away.

Chief inspector Clement Nsunda Deputy officer-in-charge at Ndola traffic said a docate will be opened to pave way for investigations to find the driver who flee the scene.

The bus belongs to a Ndola business man Zino Ratif whose son was also at the scene of the accident.

  1. Find that chap and cage him. Alot of people occasionally drink & drive me included. As a driver you should know if you have had too much & you feel your ability to drive or make judgement is impaired just park & sober up a bit

    • This is where the problem is – when to say enough is enough. So if you know that you are driving, whatever form of vehicle, do not even think of drinking, its not right.

  2. Zambians are COWARDS, THIS MAN SHUD HAVE BEEN BEATEN AND KEYS CONFISTICATED AND HANDED OVER TO RATSA before the accident , Manje vima zambians just talking bla bla Sembe , sembe , sembe..just like bola to be beaten by lesotho of all countries of which lesotho is just an admistrative region of south africa, please zedians wake up and fight for your right

  3. The passengers are a problem. They usually take cases of beer drinking by drivers lightly just like overspeeding. You have the right to leave the bus once you suspect that the driver has been taking some alchohol.

    • how are they going to leave , they fear driver and conductor ,call boys harrassing them , , insult them. am sure you have experienced that before , once you get on board ,thats the end . up to destination .

  4. Very sad. These chaps have no regard for the safety of the passengers.May the law visit him soon, but again knowing how corrupt our system is, he will be back on the road sooner than later.

  5. Unfortunately , drinking and driving is the order of the day in Zambia ! Even if you are to park your car and book a taxi after a drink , chances are that the taxi driver will also have drunk alcohol !

  6. imwe banthu surely! i blame all the passengers; u vividly see the guy has been drinking and u gladly get on the bus—expecting miracle? u should thank God you are still alive. lets be assertive people!! then we can help bring sanity towards public transport sector…there are too many busses nowadays, so we gang up & and refuse to get on the wrong one. i know we all have excuses of an in a hurry; ndeya kuchililo, ndeya kumalwele etc—but in event of accident do u get there.”better late than never”. lets be assertive!!!!

  7. Indeed we passengers are a big big problem. You see the driver drinkingbeer and you allow him to drive. Whether the driver is drinking before driving or when driving, the fact is that the chap is in no state to drive. Passengers wake up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Schupit passengers. I would beat all of them and let the driver go because he atleast was doing was he normally would do…getting drunk on the job. You had every right not to board the bus. What did you do instead? You sat there ndwiiiiii like a mpofu.

The passengers have themselves to blame. Manje ikafika nkani about a hule being caught in a married man’s home, you people are always quick to want to adminster “street justice”.

I wish one of you passengers had died then maybe you’d do something about this the next time you see a bus driver drinking before he gets behind the wheel.
    Schupit idyats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
