The Zambian Government has distanced itself from Vice president Guy Scott’s remarks which have sparked a diplomatic row that South Africans are backwards.
Chief Government Spokesperson Kennedy Sakeni has said that Dr Scott made the remarks in his own individual capacity and that his remarks are not representative of the government.
Mr Sakeni told QFM in an interview that however the diplomatic row caused by the vice present between Zambia and South Africa will be handled diplomatically.
Dr Scott is quoted in Wednesday’s edition of the Guardian newspaper of the UK as having referred to South Africans as being backwards in historical development.
Mr Sakeni has also dismissed assertions that the Vice President’s remarks will affect Zambia’s bilateral relations with South Africa.
He said that Zambia will not demonize South African in any way as the two countries have been sharing cordial relations for a long time.
Guy Scott was right. Let’s call a spade, a spade.
He was very right. No doubt about it.People just have difficulties digesting the truth.
Scott is a residual of colonial racism who was forced to embrace blacks after the death his colonial government …was NEVER right in that statement,,,,
He scott was never part of the liberation of zambia , south africa or any other black african country.. how dare he attacks our african brothers we have been through thick and thin with them….
Scott next time you want to open that stupid mouth of ours,, speak against you own,,UK !!!… kupusa!!!
I WANT TO MEASURE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE GOVT AND GUY SCOTT’S REMARKS – SOMEBODY, BRING A MEASURING TAPE PLEASE!
@Ndobo, & i quote “next time you want to open that stupid mouth of ours”….& yes, yours is a stupid mouth….keep the Veep out of your matuvi talk…galu iwe!
Ndobo Guy Scott was there during the liberation struggle and among the first people that worked with Kaunda after he formed government. Guy Scott’s father spoke for the black people of Northern Rhodesia when he was MP…I think he did well even though it was not the right thing to do to speak out too openly about it.He was well balanced in general.
@Trigo
i have heard that story before,,,yes he worked with kaunda after enrichening and benefiting from the colonial government at the expense of our own native africans,
Tell me a devil can turn into a holly angel after tables against him???,,
So that muzungu opusa called guys scott is racist with racist DNA in his veins… if he fights any one black and african he fights me,,, i will not hold back
@Trigo Don’t waste time on this Ndobo old fella. Like I have pointed out elsewhere, He is a 62 year old with a mind of a 4 year old. At his age, and since he went to school in the 60s he should know guy Scott’s contribution to Zambia’s independence but I suspect he dozed his way to Standard 7 or whatever they called it then and is onlY trying to catch up now by learning zambian history via the internet
I have never seen muzungu wofunta like Scott, hwoever whatever he said under influence of alcohol was great. Especially about Mugabe..
so where does that leave muzungu opusa guy scott`??
A hero. He said the truth!!!
He has been reduced to the f.ool that he is!
@guardian,,,
typical of you african cleaners in you uk, anyway ! you are allowed to fight your own black brothers and run off to lick a muzungu`s bottom as your hero,, after all you are alright cleaning muzungu toilets… protect those toilets and keep them clean!!
He he he… Personal or not – the sentiments were correct!
Spot on
You’re just victims of the small country syndrome! You’ve been independent from 1964 and all you’ve done destroy your country. South Africans don’t owe you anything. No South African government official has ever said anything bad about Zambia but you think your own Vice President is a hero for calling South Africans backward! You are really a nation of comedians as evidenced by the squalor all over Zambia. Fix your own problems and confine your kaponya name calling within the boundaries of Zambia. It is very embarrassing in international affairs when a government disowns its own Vice President and claims that he is speaking for himself. If Scott was a hero as you are claiming; he would have resigned! What he said was foo.lish!
IWE CHI SEPISO Please go back to Zambian Eye where you blog as Lefashe. I see they shut you up there and now you ve brought the same spermless argument here you racist pig!
@sepiso masipa ahao. munungu injaa zwaa>
@Msoro and Mulasikwanda, your Stu.pid reactions just prove that I scratched your nerves. Oh yeah, you and your Guy Scott just have an inferiority complex. People like you behave like other countries owe you something. You used to say the same rubbish about Zimbabweans. My advice to you is to tell your Stu.pid white man to build you a road or something. South Africans have their own problems they do not need nagging foreigners. What next ? Do you want them to wipe your stinking as.sses? Very soon your hero Scott will be retiring to Cape Town because that’s where all Rhodesians go to die.
Sepiso so you just come to blog so you can scratch people’s nerves as you state here? That’s very cheap. People shud have grander ambitions in this life.
So, let the boss fire him – Nchito yaoneka malume aEdgar Lungu!!!
Iye Imwee!
Shani wemwina Zambia?
Thats what am talking about ! Guy Scott is a man who speaks his mind honestly and openly. He is a decent guy with a good sense of humour, and as liberal as he can be given his position and situation – but without the bull shi.t ,PC talk, vague and unrealistic crap that most leaders give us.Aluta continua.
Sense!
Scott has been disowned by his own government of which he is the Vice President. Can you mention any country in the World where a government has distanced itself from the statements issued by someone as senior as the Vice President? There’s nothing decent about someone who says: “I hate South Africans”! It seems there are no adults in this PF government nor amongst its sycophants!
How interesting that all this comes shortly after the alleged statement by HH that Scott is a st.upid white man. A week is indeed a long time in politics.
@Goncalves…the issue here is not so much about who disowned who.It is all about demonstrating that the man has a mind of his own and so is a personal opinion which is different from that of government. He should be given a thumbs up for being honest and down to earth.Few people in leadership positions talks about the world as they see it and political priorities as he sees them.Long live Scott.
*Few people in leadership positions talks about the world as they see it and political priorities as they see them.Long live Scott*
That is not possible! He is the VICE PRESIDENT. How can government distance itself from government?
he said l hate south Africans not we hate!! he was speaking as an individual
@al may be that can pass. Also if you read the article Scott says “I hate South Africa for the same reason…..” That’s not to say he hates SA in the strong sense of the word. Finish the sentence and the meaning comes through
Dear PF sycophants we told you that when you are a government official you should be very careful with what you say about other countries. It doesn’t matter whether it is true or not. You’ve now been made to throw your own VP under the bus. So how is the world going to know when Scott is just speaking for himself or your government? The holes you dig for yourselves, Pathetic Failures! Pity, Pity , Pity!
The whole Zambian government has now been made to look very amateurish. Anyway this does not come as a surprise with this eternally immature administration that makes policies on the hoof!
It seems you have a point but you are not coming out clearly. There is too much bitterness choking sense in your words.
The truth hurts! I thought you were the ones praising your Scott for been blunt. “I hate South Africans” he thundered. And you gave him a standing ovation!
Why the heck are you now accusing me of bitterness for calling out the incompetence of your dear PF government?
No two ways. He has a point and he has made it quite clearly
What “Clap-trap!” When Mwanawasa called Zim a “Titanic sinking”, no one said the Zed govt was amateurish – he alone went out of his way to avoid “uncle Bob!”
Sakeni is obviously not a seasoned “international politician” – so many ways this could have been deflected – e.g. “he was misquoted”, “someone put the words into his mouth”, “it was all a set up”, ” it appears someone has manipulated the voice recording of the interview!!” – ba sakeni, te pachi mwenso bena!!!
Punk a.ss Government!! You can’t even stand by your own, what about the rest of us?
Punk a.ss Government!! You can’t even stand by your own, what about the rest of us?
Its stinging rotten in PF they are starting to jump like rats…. its getting HOT in the kitchen
Eng. lol you always crack my ribs mwe….that’s why we call them CNP (Chimbwi No Plan – Clueless Hynas)…Atleast i am a Chimbwi with lots of plans..
Of course hates South Africans for failing to prolong Apartheid so he could continue being two faced and oppress the blacks. You all need to read deeply into his trash statement. He will always be a white man who thinks black people are beneath him, a true Boer.
“…having referred to South Africans as being backwards in historical development…”
Do you understand what it means?
@Truth, you are as comical as ever! If you’re aware that Tigress does not understand what Guy Scott said, why haven’t you explained it to him? It appears that Mr Truth doesn’t know the meaning of what Mr Scott said!
Sepiso, I might be comical, but I am not *****icall. Whilst I do not agree with VP on the core of his political beliefs, I do understand the meaning.
As to explaining to you and the bunch of illiterate “political commentators” which relay solely on the language of insults, racism or tribalism, it is lost cause.
After all, as you imply that you did understand, I am anxiously waiting for your learned contribution in enlightening political interpretation.
P.S. “Tigress” is not “him” but “she”
That’s what you get for putting people who have mouth diarrhea in high offices. How embarrassing! The Veep is not a hero, hero for what? He thinks the insults that Zambians have come to accept can be accepted internationally? What happened to diplomacy? I hear those people in the high offices are unteachable. After going through training in diplomacy, their mouth diarrhea can not be cured, shame! That’s exactly what the No. 1 did in Botswana when he visited last year and as Zambians living in Botswana, it was embarrassing!
“Hate” is not an insult!
It seems the PF government is very, very afraid of the South African government. Honestly, how can you disown your VP? Poor Dotty ! You no longer speak for your PF government. Now whenever you open your mouth people are entitled to ask: “Who are you speaking for , dear Dotty and in what capacity?”
If I were you , I would resign but it seems you have neither shame nor decency!
No!!!!!!!!!It will be…’Sir are you on leave?’ Or ‘are you on duty????’ Maaaiiiwe!!!! Sole william!!!!! Or is it sole Dotty!!!! Perhaps the Chief spokesman can help us with proof that he was indeed on leave.
It is amazing that people are supporting him and yet the government is dead scared. Who cares about you, the blogger supporting Guy, when the important entity the executive is dead scared. Issuing a statement so fast before RSA blinks.
But the ordinary South African on a lot of web sites agree with Guy Scot. Unlike you Zambians, South Africans admit to have a second look at themselves when they see a mistake pointed out to them. The truth and reconciliation commission is such example. When you tell PF that Sata is a tribalist, they say its HH. When Kabimba says Sata is sick, PF says its HH and Mumba saying it. Lack of introspection like our South African brothers.
Sense
Who cares? The SA government has asked for an explanation. And the Zambian government has disowned Scott. He does not speak for the Zambian government! Is your government afraid of backward people? Cowards! Kaponyas!
does anyone know the classmate for sata at whatever level of education?
Iwe na iwe he is old. All his classmates died.
He was “home -schooled!”
I do not understand some of these PF followers, when their bad policies and inconsistencies are questioned they say you are being choked by bitterness. Is it bitterness to express disgust at the government for publicly disowning their vice president? One thing for sure is that if the SA government had not reacted the way they did these PF and their GRZ would not have betrayed Guy Scott. Shame!
Poor Scott! He cant act as President when Sata is out of the country! And now the poor soul cannot even speak for his government! What is the point of Guy Scott ; if I may ask?
Guy Scott is a coward – finish and klaar! He sits with Zuma in most SADC and AU meetings and never tells him in his face or Mugabe’s what he says to the Guardian in the UK. Just what was the essence of all of that vomit? These guys have alot to learn from comrade R G Mugabe – he never says bad things about you to other people, he says it in PRESENCE – WHO EVER YOU ARE, VIVA MUGABE , bulya ebwaume!!
One Ngwee All politicians have to master the art of being cowards while presenting themselves as courageous heroes. In politics you can’t always be blunt. You could cause wars all the time. If obama were to tell that Korean U-five what hethinks of him we already could have had oNe big war this year.
send him to south africa to apologise, if they sort him our; good riddance at least he will be sacrificing himself for the good of the country.
send him to south africa to apologise, if they sort him out; good riddance at least he will be sacrificing himself for the good of the country.
I really hate that word you guys keep repeating “apologise”. Apologise for what & to who, any way? For putting up with TRUTH? Smell the coffee and move on. GUY was and still is, 200% correct!! Ask those who are hurt WHY it hurt them. I have been in this country for the past 16 years, and comparing apples with apples, SCOTT painted the most correct picture regarding South Africa and South Africans. Excited, Fat and dumb……
HH is indeed a humble man to only described our ceremonial vice president as a ”stupid “person. This is the man who saw it fit to describe leaders of other countries in the manner that he did. He should have qualified that by emphasizing that he was saying those things in his own personal capacity as a Zambian citizen of Scottish descent. A person accorded such a high position even though it is ceremonial, should weigh his words. This perhaps vindicates Sata as to why he has kept him as a ceremonial vice president. The honourable thing the PF Govt. should do, is to let the South African Govt deal with him as they deem fit since he does not have the blessing of the PF Govt. Reports coming from our Zambian colleagues in South Africa are not very good as some are viewed as of same mind.
Mr SCOTT was right.
-compare our shantie compounds in zambia and South African shantie compounds. In south Africa most People are living in tins without any space for toilets.
-Coloreds are still discriminated like nobody’s business.
-poverty levels are actually sinking in SOUTH Africa.
This time around Mr SCOTT WAS JUST ON THE SPOT ON SOUTH AFRICA.
THE TRUETH CAN NOT BE HIDDEN ALL THE TIME.YOU REMEMBER THE TRUETH AGAIN CAME OUT OF MR MWANAWASA”‘S MOUTH ABOUT THE TITANIC SINKING IN ZIMBAMBWE AND THE ZIMBAMBWAN DOLLAR WENT MAD!
You ZAMBIANS ARE STUPID KA? When are you going to learn sense? Why hang on to a stupid white man as your leader in a land dominated by blacks. Whose interests is he representing in ZAMBIA aprt from his pockets? Muzungu opusa
He said he hates SA for the same reason that Latin American countries hate the USA. Did people get the correcting meaning of this phrase? I am sure South Africans themselves got it right. He scoffed at South Africa again on CNBCA interview.
BArrack Not all white men are stoopid. Just like not all black men are stoopid. Some of the whites show their commitment to helping the disadvantaged. This Guy is one of those. Just ask the community of Mkushi and they will tell you they don’t see a whiteman in Scott. They only see a fellow human being because that’s the way he presents himself.

Going by your logic Obama shouldn’t be a US president since whites are dominant in the US.
This GUY must not go SCOT free for bringing our country into disrepute…
Scott! big thanx telling the South Africans the truth. They are soooo backwards!
Country men & women! Is Zambia a yellow fever country? Just look at how they subject our fellow Zambians that visit that country with huge harassments to ensure they carry with them a yellow fever certified test card. I call this being backward & foolish. To the worst, this process is an insult to us Zambian. By the way we got nothing to lose by souring our relations with that country. I even stopped visiting that country years way back & I miss nothing. I love my Zambia
i believe there was a lot of misquoting in what he said. if he said that, i believe he spoke his heart as person than a vp of zambia.
YABA hahahahahaha. Only Zambians take Nkani yamunsaka ( guy Scott ) and spew it out to international tabloid gazettes lol. YABA!
It is Guy Scott who talked voluntarily to the UK Guardian. The interview was plastered on the web and the whole got to read it. It was been twitted by foreigners even before Zambians became aware of it. Guy Scott did an interview so that the world could hear his view points. He has succeded in that, so it seems!
FYI – Zambia has had some of its best days when we virtually had no diplomatically relations with SA at all. Zambia does not, has never and it is unlikely it will ever need SA. They are the ones who owe us an eternal debt of gratitude for looking after the whole lot of them, the ANC, ZANU-PF – you name them. All the big boys were looked after by us when the rest of the world did not care to even give them a glimpse. It is about time, we re-established the real order of things. Having money does not count for everything – Zambia is the “OLDER BROTHER” and not the other-way around. The VP makes a few light-hearted remarks and they are starting to throw tantrums? Grow up SA – Good friendship is also about taking a mick over each other!
He said I hate SA not we hate SA, what sakeni said was ok, the are not children acting on the statement which the don’t know what came into the vp, people don’t be childish, sakeni said the government the are working on it…what guy said he was not sent by the government don’t be childish putting the pf government into this, the GRZ the said the ll answer when the talk the vp.. Akantu akanono kaluke ichikulu, that being childish!!!
I am really astonished that black people thought that a raciest white man like Scott thought good of them… this man is a user, he remained in Zambia because it is the only place he could be somebody because black people thinks that anything white is good…. News flash, white people don’t like your black ass*** his comment was not directed to South Africans alone what he really want to say is that all Black People are backward even though he is taking their money…
David – it must be very difficult for you to contemplate a world where black people and white people get along and have deeply shared values. Guess what or in your own words, “News Flash” – that world actually does exist. Someday you may find it, for now? Well…
Any whit person that remains in an African nation is only there because it affords him a better life than he would otherwise have among his own kind… this is just the real Scott coming out when he is around his own kind…. Do you believe he loves Zambian? or think that we are progressive? Come on people…
He said he hates SA for the same reason that Latin American countries hate the USA. Did people get the correcting meaning of this phrase? I am sure South Africans themselves got it right. He scoffed at South Africa again on CNBCA interview.
Something about guy scott and that can’t be taken away is that his command of english is second to none. This incident aside, i have admired his usage and construction of the queens language. I read the articles attributed to him and i could just admire the quizzical way he described Jacob Zuma and Robert Mugabe and i agree with him that exactly who they are . He suCcintly puts it in his own way that the rich black south africans are today the white alikes is spot on.
When he says south africans are politicaly backwards, who can argue against that. They really are. The majority of them don’t even know who liberated them from the york of apartheid let alone say thank you for it. The black south africans don’t know but the boers do. How shameful and how can you blame Guy Scott .
The MARK OF A MAN IS ONE THAT STANDS BY HIS WORD!!!! That is his opinion, which is not actually far-fetched to what many others think. Why do some people think his comments were racists – (when actually this reflects what these bloggers are!) – if so, why didn’t he pick on Botswana, or Namibia, or Malawi etc etc. Leave the “Guy” alone, you guys need to toughen up – noti ku yopa yopa ntaawu zonse!!
Malawi, Botswana or Namibia? These are small countries with economies smaller than Zambia. So as someone suffering from the “small country syndrome” Guy Scott could only attack South Africa because it is the dominant power. The “small country syndrome” is an affliction of inferiority. The Tanzanians and Ugandans have it in relation to Kenya. The UK and other European countries have it in relation to Germany. The rest of the world suffers from it in relation to the USA.
Easy to see who is suffering from an inferiority complex then!!
Take a leaf from Bob Marley (Could be a leaf of cannabis), liberate yourself from Mental Slavery!!!!
All those who are calling him a racist, what he said is nothing compared to U.S. vice president Biden saying Obama was the first articulate black man to run for president. And Biden has also made statements without Obama’s approval. So, it’s not just Scott who has spoken his views without approval from his party. But anyway, I agree with him, and I don’t see his remarks as racist. He is saying that the ANC leaders walk around as if they are the greatest and yet the inequality remains. He’s not endorsing Helen Zille or the DA, he’s pointing out that the ANC don’t have very much to commend themselves for in the past decade.
@Devil’s Advocate
Correct on all aspects.
Sleep of a tough by Dr. Guy Scott!
Sleep of a tongue by Dr. Guy Scott!
‘slip of the tongue’
South Africans dont care and not not upset..firstly they dont know the meaning of ‘Bees Knees’ and also it came from a white man..which is normal occurence in RSA. White south africans insults blacks all day..
If the VP’s personal view is that of hating SA, do you think that he can make a decision as VP that will benefit both Zambia and SA?
Probably not. Any time something related to SA comes up, he will make sure it fails.
We need to lose this man; quickly.
Guy Scot is a great very well educated and informed man who says it like it is. Few weeks ago he called most Zambian public service ‘thieves’ and he was right. In case you have not noticed South Africa government, especially under President Zuma, have been trying to undermine Zambian government. We may be poor by choice but we are the elder brother who sacrificed for their freedom. When Zambian car buyers were being robbed and killed, what did the RSA high commissioner in Zambia say? President Zuma (arms deal) lacks integrity like RB (endless scandals). Because RSA is richer does not mean much (whites are rich). Zimbabweans own their land. Malema for President

All of you who are criticizing Dr. Scott have not really read the history of Zambia’s independence struggle. If you think Sata fought more than Guy Scott, you are lying. Again, you cannot believe everything that comes out of British Newspaper. Zambian Govt must learn to desist from making statements without research. What if Guy Scott was misquoted? What if the statement is incomplete? It is true, historically South Africans are backward, which may mean newer on the scene. Especially, when it comes to independence and race relations. They only ended Aparthied in the nineties, only earlier than South Sudan. So what is wrong with Scott’s statement? I don’t think he’s referring to civilization or literacy. He’s talking about politics of participation.
I disagree with you KKM he said much more than that they were historically backward. He said they thought they were the “bees knees.” In essence they think they are the big dogs on the continent, which frankly they are. Let’s not try to downplay the significance of RSA on the continent. If the South Africans are difficult people to work with on issues affecting the continent you take it up with them and indicate to them within the confines of the various diplomatic avenues that you have that you are not pleased with the positions or attitudes that they have displayed. To be quoted in an international newspaper disparaging another country, especially when most african countries are trying to better their brand on the world scene is just outright despicable!
Serving the best for last. Now that we have gotten rid of the pretenders, we have started getting the &grain from the chuff. KKM, is making a valid and sensible argument here but to slightly differ from the literacy issue I would say that the Majority of the indigenous South Africans are still behind on that front too. This is not by choice but by many years of oppression and unlevelled playing field subjected to them by successive white minority racist governments during apartheid. We symphazise with you our South African brothers and sisters. Make no mistake our brothers and sisters in SA are catching up quickly and two generations from now the country will have some of the most educated people on the planet with all that infra structure they have. Aluta continua, umkhonto we sizwe!
Zambia needs South Africa more than South Africa needs Zambia. South Africa trades directly with the EU and is regarded as a peer. SA has a large sea front from end to end or east to west for her sea exports and imports but all we wanted to do was to import cars through these ports as Zambians. Short sightedness! Zambia is not a directly connected country with SA but we enjoyed relations as if we shared borders. Zambians have enjoyed a lot of respect from the South Africans until in recent years and these flare ups and miscommunication gaffes won’t help matters. The South African route is still the safest for Zambia exports and imports and I am not talking about the importation of a Datsun or a Pajero this and Mitsubishi that. I am talking of imports and exports that change people’s…
Those are things you take up with Governments. Making remarks that personally besmirch the character of South Africans is not wise. They are ahead of us economically. That does not mean that they are without fault on different issues. Contrast Guy Scott’s method of communicating his displeasure with Obama’s approach. The Mexicans recently decided that they US federal agencies were not going to have easy access to Mexican colleagues for cooperation. Obama, when queried on this matter said he would not get into this until he had visited Mexico and got an understanding of their internal concerns. Just because u personally hate them doesn’t make it good policy to shout it from the rooftops!
I think he should have been more diplomatic considering that he not only represents himself but the nation too. There are better ways of addressing issues without causing chaos.
Somebody essentially help to make critically posts I might state.
