Government says the construction of 288 chiefs’ palaces at a cost of KR11.3 million will start in September this year.

Chiefs and Traditional Affairs Deputy Minister Susan Kawandami in an interview said officials would soon start going round chiefs’ palaces to show traditional rulers the designs for the palaces.

She said only recognised chiefs would benefit from the 288 palaces to be built countrywide.Ms Kawandami said the modalities for the designs had been completed and her ministry was just waiting for the chiefs to study the new designs.

“We have made very good progress and very soon we shall start taking the designs into the chiefdoms for approval,” she said.

She said the palaces would be electrified and that other basic needs like water would also be provided.Ms Kawandami said the palaces would be institutional houses, meaning that all the chiefs that come after the serving chiefs would occupy the same units.

“These palaces will be institutional and not personal, so we won’t have to worry about where the next chief after the serving one will stay,” she said.

She said the ministry would begin with construction of senior chiefs’ palaces then go down to ordinary chiefs. The palaces in a deplorable state would be rehabilitated.Ms Kawandami said palaces should be improved because they had for a long time been neglected.

  1. chiefs have never even be to school, zambian people never vote for them. they are not even capable of giving an advice to the president concerning the economy of the nation. you are just draining the little resources that poor country has.if you can spend that money on cleaning the streets of lusaka it can make some sense than buiding a house for a chief. will that house benefit the village dwellers?

    • I agree this is madness. Do the majority of Zambians subscribe to this nonsense? This is a waste of money to support inherently backward and corrupt institutions.

We should actually be thinking of how to modernise or abolish the corrupt groupings .

    • Assuming exactly the same scope of work at each of the palaces, this amounts to almost K40million per palace. These are our chiefs and deserve to look, behave and live in a respectable way, and K40m is a decent amount for this purpose. My only problem is that these facilities are remotely and sparsely dotted all over the country, and some of these palaces will be lucky to get anything. Others will only have doors and taps replaced, and the sites are too far for most Zambians to verify how the money would have been spent. I think a lot of if will also be spent on Accommodation, Travel, Meal and Beer allowances!!

  2. As a matter of information, how are the 288 palaces to be distributed [dotted] among the ten Provinces – could somebody with information let us know how the chiefdoms are spread over the Zambian geographical expanse? which Provines have the most recognised chiefdoms and which ones have the least, and why?

  3. Only those palaces that are pro PF will get a share and the change will go into someones pocket unaccounted for as usual

  4. This move is very welcome.more especially for my palace which is dilapidated and yet it is situated in the tourist capital.

  5. Rehabilitate roads and clinics in the chiefdoms. The chief can live in a ditch for all I care!

  6. This is very good.traditional leaders play a big role in our rural communities.govt need to recognise them in deeed indeed.
