The Women’s movement has advised MMD Spokesperson Dora Siliya to recontest the Petauke Central seat.
Ms. Siliya recently lost her Petauke Central seat after the Supreme Court nullified her 2011 election victory saying it was marred with widespread electoral malpractices.
NGOCC Executive Director Engwase Mwale said in an interview in Lusaka that Ms. Siliya should consider re-contesting the seat in order to promote women’s participation in politics.
Mrs Mwale said Ms. Siliya is one of the strongest female political figures hence the need to retain her in the political landscape.
“For us Ms Siliya has demonstrated over the years that she is powerful female character in our politics and she has adequately represented the women in Parliament and we would like her to try again, ultimately the people of Petauke will have to decide but we would like to have her in Parliament again,” Ms. Mwale said.
She bemoaned the low levels of women’s participation in Parliament adding that losing Ms. Siliya in Parliament further weakens the female voice in politics.

Agreed. I thought NGOCC was with us in the corruption fight. Even powerful politicians shuld be punished if they are found wanting. Infact they should not recontest but taken to court by the unticorruptio commission as proof is already in court hands. Just find other equally powerful women.

Is this the view of NGOCC or is this Mrs Mwale’s view? If it is NGOCC’s view then we have a big problem. How do you try and portray Dora in a positive view despite all the crap she has said and done? Am sure Silvia Masebo is a better option in your eyes right? This is woman who is supposed to be a mother but took politics to a “slaughter ground” called Kapasa! I would rather we have a politician use their middle finger in parliament than have one that has no heart for the people whose sons have been slaughtered like dogs by the government she represents!

Gender equality should be met in parliament. One day Zambia will have a woman President. That time is coming sooner than later. Go Dora let the women be empowered and tell them enough is enough with bye-elections by the PF trying to make Zambia a one party state. We are a multiparty state. We need to practice democracy and not just talk about it. We need to use our resources to build the country and not build bye-elections.

Engwase Mwale should stop being a hypocrite. Engwase, you can’t encourage Dora to stand again on the one hand but turn a blind eye to the illegal holding of office by Chibesakunda on the other hand. Condemn illegallity first.
