Human Rights observation in Zambia non negotiable – Expert

A Social Consultant in Development Cooperation has called for observation of Human Rights in Zambia as they are not negotiable.

And Livingstone based Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) Paralegal Christine Mutema said the fight for gender equality was being hindered by lack of funding from government.

Ms Jutta Wagner said Zambia was among countries that had committed to adhere to universal human rights and its citizens had an obligation to respect the rights of those around them.

ZANIS reports that the Consultant said this during a capacity building working on HIV, Gender and Human Rights mainstreaming for the District AIDS Task Force members and civil society organizations in Livingstone today.

She also noted that HIV/AIDS in the workplace threatened livelihoods of workers and employers, undermined employment rights, reduced the supply of labour and available skills, increased labour costs and reduced productivity.

Ms Jutta however, said these challenges could be addressed by practical and effective HIV work place policies.

She however, cautioned that HIV work place programs should conform to the International Labour Organization (ILO) Code of Practice on HIV and AIDS and the world of work.

Meanwhile, Livingstone based Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) Paralegal Christine Mutema said the fight for gender equality was being hindered by lack of funding from government.

Ms Mutema said lack of a safe home for victims of Gender Based Violence (GBV) in Livingstone was negatively affecting the fight against the vice as victims were forced to return to the perpetrators of the violence since they did not have alternative accommodation.

She said efforts to lobby for funding from government had so far proved futile resulting in GBV victims withdrawing charges against perpetrators of violence who subjected them to more violence.
