Over 200 000 male circumcisions successfully performed on men in Zambia this year

THE Ministry of Health with the support of cooperating partners has successfully performed over 200 000 male circumcisions on men in Zambia this year, Lusaka District Health Management Board representative Mata Mata has said.

Speaking during the Launch Satellite Activities on Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) at Kalingalinga Basic School ground in Lusaka yesterday for the August Campaign, Dr Mata said Kalingalinga Clinic had circumcised 216 males.

He said Zambia had set an ambitious target of scaling up the VMMC programmes to reach 80 per cent of HIV-negative uncircumcised men aged between 15 and 49 years by 2015.

Dr Mata said for this target to be met, 1.86 million circumcisions should be performed between 2012 and 2015 as this would avert an estimated 339, 632 HIV-negative (29.9 per cent) for a net savings of US$1.7 billion between 2011 and 2025.

He reiterated the Ministry’s position to effectively reduce the incidence of the rate of HIV in Zambia.

He said government had targeted to circumcise 45, 000 HIV negative males for the August campaign in order to ensure Zambia achieved universal coverage of male circumcision.

“Government through the Ministry of Health and its cooperating partners has been undertaking national VMMC campaign periodically, with the aim of increasing demand for this service throughout the country,” Dr Mata said.

Society for Family Health (SFH) Executive Director Namwinga Chintu said Zambia still had a high HIV/AIDS prevalence though the rate had in recent times significantly dropped adding that campaigns such as the VMMC would help reduce the incidence further.

Dr Chintu said the society was currently working through community structures where people went to sensitise the males in an effort to make them understand the benefits of male circumcision.

She called on circumcised males to advocate for circumcision for others to access the service as they were best suited to speak out on the matter.

  1. I fail to understand why a normal man would want that foreskin on him.. To start with, it smells bad just after 30 minutes from bathing. It holds the last drop of your urine, need I go on? please go MC

    • The foreskin has over 10,000 nerves and keeps the glans sensitive. Without it, male orgasms are 70% less intense.
By the way, if your foreskin smells bad after just 30 mins of bathing, I’d go see a doctor!!!

    • @Justine, you lost your foreskin from akaswende/ syphilis. You smelled it because you had purse it. Thank God your grandfather had to pill-off that rotten skin for you.

    • God created everything and He said it is good,,,,,all that is created in His name is good. The fore skin plays a very vital role in sex above all in the protection of the deligate cells at the glans.Scientifically the glans must never be hard for the cells would die and the purpose of the creation become defeated by few selfish people.Iam not surprised that the doctors and others in the health sector are heading the NGOS to continue getting rich on poor people. This fraud, scam called HIV is for sure enriching people.Go to internet and research on HIV..Just say..HIV SCAM all will come.

    • It’s a woman complaining. Justine with an E at the end is the female for Justin. Her male partner should go and see a doctor indeed.

    • 2.1 He must be a Justin, but since he hates his manhood so bad, he decide to be “woman” and change name a bit.
He even hated the last drop of URINE, he was shaking it viciously, without realizing that if he shake it more than 3 times, then he is playing with himself!!

  2. Hehehehe these things u can jst never understand them.until now am not seeing it as important as going for vct.but my advise is allow children to make such decisions when they grow up kaili.ah I can be upset if am a small boy and when I grow up I notice am different because bla bla happend when I was a baby

    • Good point sisy Susan..
But they are doing it because they already received donor, most of it from USA. They have to implement the projects.

    • me i went to mukanda when i was about 12yrs it was done there… but am made to believe that women appreciate `cut ones` @sisy susan what do you say???

    • @Ndobo, what kind of mukanda was that where they never told you to keep a secret?? I think mwapanga fye story.
But Ba Ndobo, what can Susana say, of course she will be neutral.

    • @nostradamus…
its a open secret today… every jim and jack is doing it, it used to a secret then because when you are `cut` you are told that you are more `powerful` than an `uncut` man… and to keep the powerfulnes you keep your `cutting` a secret

  3. Recent studies do not support circumcision to reduce the hiv transmission. infact in industrialised countries like USA, sweden its been discouraged. No doctor or medical organisation suports circumcision. its a medical myth. To understand better you can google “myths about circumcison you likely believe, functions of the foreskins, relation of male circumcision to cervical cancer sexuality and female circumcision. Read widely before making a decision or else you will regret. The study been done in Africa actually they are calling it “cargo cult science” meaning practices that have the semblance of being scientific, but do not in fact follow the scientific method. Dont just do it simply coz MPs are advertising it. For children let them grow up to come and make their own choice about…

  4. Africa mayo Africa…ala salapuka..nanomba ucili uleingila fye panono panono.Open your eyes, some of these issues are only talked about in Africa the dumping field.Kindly spare some few coins and sit on the computer and start searching ,,,just say HIV Scam or fraud or go to youtube.

  5. I wonder why this should only be the solution in Africa. HIV cases in the UK, for example, are on the increase and no one is talking about circumcision. Wake up my beloved dark continent. I hope we are not being used as guinea pig for experiments by some chaps in the West.

  6. Stop genital mutilations.God made man complete, why subtract? If one has sore gums, removing the lips is not the solution!

  7. This subject irks me. I’m ok without being circumcised. I have no problem and need no sympathy. I do the dreaded VCT’s and that is good enough. It’s ironical that women are speaking loudest about it and yet they discourage women genital mutilation, which they call barbaric. They accuse our fore-skin of causing cervical cancer! This is insane and unsupported. Get the correct cause of yo cancer to achieve the solution and not sensationalism. MP’s advertising the VMMC act in public, are just seeking cheap publicity making up for their failed representation in parliament. Please give us a break as men from the shameful adverts conducted any time of the day without being sensitive to the audience. We don’t like complaining about anything as you women but you shud not take advantage of our…

  8. This is a tragedy. Circumcision will not be “voluntary” when fathers force it on their sons. Many professionals have criticized the studies claiming that circumcision reduces HIV transmission. They have various flaws. The investigators did not seek to determine the source of the HIV infections during their studies. They assumed all infections were heterosexually transmitted. Most HIV infections in Africa are transmitted by contaminated injections and surgical procedures. The absolute rate of HIV transmission reduction is only 1.3%, not the claimed not the claimed 60%. Authorities that cite the studies have other agendas including political and financial. Research shows that circumcision causes physical, sexual, and psychological harm. This harm is ignored by circumcision advocates…

  9. From a USAID report:
“There appears no clear pattern of association between male circumcision and HIV prevalence—in 8 of 18 countries with data, HIV prevalence is lower among circumcised men, while in the remaining 10 countries it is higher.”
    http://www.measuredhs.com/pubs/pdf/CR22/CR22.pdf

It seems highly unrealistic to expect that there will be no risk compensation. The South African National Communication Survey on HIV/AIDS, 2009 found that 15% of adults across age groups “believe that circumcised men do not need to use condoms”.
    http://www.info.gov.za/issues/hiv/survey_2009.htm

It is unclear if circumcised men are more likely to infect women. The only ever randomized controlled trial into male-to-female transmission showed a 54% higher rate in the group where the men…

  10. Very interesting comments. Fellow Brothers & Sisters, what you should know is that the Government does not force. It is voluntary and hygienically correct. Let’s call it Good tradition and depends on your beliefs, norms and values. So let’s not insult one another but respect ones, beliefs??? One Zambia- One Nation_ One People (circumcised or uncircumcised).

  11. I wld like to put my voice 2 this debate.
My thot is that circumsision should only b done when one has prbmz with the foreskin..Even pipo that ejaculate prematurely should turn 2 circumsision as a second option.Otherwise its painful and i wld not encourange pipo out thier 2 do it 4 funny.

  12. #5 you are spot on. I just do not know why these Zambian medical doctors are being hoodwinked into believing that male circumcision prevents contracting HIV-AIDS. This is totally a myth and a miscarriage of vital medical information. I live in the USA and I can tell u that most American males are circumcised yet there is an appalling number of increased AIDS patients among them. In South Africa, most males are circumcised yet if you took time to look at the statistics of AIDS related cases you will be shocked to say the least. They are on the increase. So please stop the nonsense and just stay hygienically clean, wash your tweno always. Every part of the body emits a certain odor whether cut or uncut. Don’t buy into mutilation of your genitals. Infact most women wishes most men were…

  13. Those of who are using God, you’re wrong because he told Abraham to do it and the man was 90. I have done it and it is good.
