The Inspector General of Police has directed all the Zambia Police Provincial and Unit Commanders to come up with physical fitness programmes.

The Inspector General Stella Libongani says she has observed that most officers have slackened in maintaining physical fitness despite having been observing Thursday as a day for physical fitness for a long time.

She said the nature of police work was a taxing one and it calls for alert and physically fit officers. She said engaging in various sporting activities gives police officers strength, stamina and improves agility necessary to perform functions as law enforcement officers effectively.

Ms Libongani said sport also increases longevity by reducing stress and lifestyle related diseases. She said she will be conducting periodical inspections in various formations to confirm on progress.

The Inspector General of Police issued the directive during 2013 Ingepol Netball tournament held at Sikanze’s Imboela Stadium in Lusaka yesterday, 11th August, 2013.

Earlier this month President Sata raised concern regarding police officers who are over-weight saying they might find challenges executing their duties which often require fitness.

President Sata expressed the concern when he swore in Mr Malcolm Mulenga and Ms Lombe Kamukoshi as Luapula and Western Province police commissioners at State House yesterday.

“How can this police officer run? There is need for these people to have regular training. Do we still have press-ups in the Police Service?” President Sata said, pointing at one of the officers he was swearing in.

Mr Sata directed Inspector-General of Police Stella Libongani to address the issue, saying it was not right to have overweight senior police officers manning provinces.

    • The proper way of doing things is that, the Police Service should ideally have set standards which must be adhered to strictly. As it is on recruitment so the process goes on when individuals are being considered for promotion through out their Service career. There should be a set standard BMI, for the age and gender and if individuals don’t fall in the set standard, they are immediately suspended from duty, put on half pay for a prescribed period to be reviewed later. If during the period of review no change is made then the individual is indisciplined and not suitable for service life. It is as simple as that, do you need us to come back to the service to show you how to perform your duties Stella?

    • Good point. But long term fitness will come
through membership of a gym. Officers should
      be involved in bodybuilding.

  1. Zambia Police used to be very good at Judo, is it still there. I remember at Peter Singogo police camp we had Mr Mukubesa,as mwana kapokola we used to train very hard ………….Good old days., This is a welcome move. Well done madam IG.

  2. The police now is not balanced out of 73 tribes only one ethinic group being uplifted almost all provinces are headed by one ethinic group. Rubbish!

    • @Mwansabemba why can’t you simply stick to the subject without involving tribe Libongani doesn’t even sound Bemba! because am sure that’s what you are implying. I wonder if you even have statistics to back your tribalism. Learn to see sense in things before you expose your ignorance and hatred.

  3. Ba Stella, you have just woken up just because the president said something. Learn to do your jobs professionally without being prodded.

    • @Jairos

My thoughts exactly. She’s not even smart enough to come up with an initiative which seems like her own good idea, while she implements what her boss said in a disguised sort of way.
      Embarrassing.

  4. The UK has called for its police officers to keep fit as they are required to chase after villains. When Sata said something similar, he was insulted left, right and center. It seems in Zambia once you are hated, nothing you say makes sense!

  5. Before this ‘clever’ IG embarks on impressing her boss she needs to make these guys go for a thorough check up. Most people develop high blood pressure, diabetes, hyperventilation and many other side effect as a result of being overweight This can only be detected with a check up. Any ‘boot camp’ exercise could result in a stroke or worse, the death of the individual. So madam look before you leap!!

  6. Is stella Libongani fit herself? She looks plump and overweight. The late Wazakazi N’guni was one hell of a fit police officer. MHSRIP!

  8. 20km jog per week, 3000 push ups, 13000 sit ups, every six months they must clear an obstacle course in 20 minutes and 4 km in 7 minutes.

  9. No I think apa pena bakateka munasheko ukuchita embarrase others. Why don’t you start with GBM and all your chunky ministers so that they lead by example. Embarrassing a seasoned officer who always runs in the morning just because he’s big is not right. You need to have some manners apa pena bakateka.

  10. Coachez #20, you are so right. The lack of etiquette is embarrassing. Do you remember that picture of GBM sitting in that anti-aircraft gun seat. The guy is a slob. And thats our Defence Minister? Has Ukwa been to NYC and seen those Chunky officers on the streets? Charity begins at home. We have got to stop making a mockery of the presidency by treating our people like kids. Thats quite a humiliating thing to say in front of the whole world. What happened to closed door management? Sure the police need to be fit, but it is an inappropriate utterance under the circumstances. Who writes this guys speeches or is it all just ad lib ?

  11. naimwe ba IG you seem to have signs of obesity.. will you please lead by example.. can you even chase a thief in an open street ??? open gyms in every Police camp and keep your officers busy and fit , you inclusive and stop wasting our time and money, what boot camp??? improve conditions of service instead of dreaming about such costly projects….this type of reasoning is wasteful…

  12. Ya kabamba i agree with you Wasakaza was a good example of a cop also known as PHANTOM SOLDIER good people go early MHSRIP

  13. Try as you may, but the ASOS control system don’t allow for
various discount codes being applied in one particular order.
The Marketplace allows shoppers to sell directly to each other.
Thus, do not be greedy to make the most of the promo codes in the
    course of sales period.
