Mealie meal prices have continued to rise in most parts of Western Province with Sikongo having the highest cost of K90 per 25kg bag of breakfast and K85 roller meal.
Kalabo and Lukulu residents are buying the commodity at K70 breakfast and K65 roller while in Mongu a 25kg of breakfast is going at K65 and K55 roller meal respectively.
ZANIS reports that Sikongo District Commissioner Kufuka Kufuka confirmed the development in an interview, today.
Mr. Kufuka expressed sadness at the rate at which prices of mealie meal have been hiked in the district
He said residents in the area were unable to buy the commodity adding that the district has also been hit with hunger due to poor rainfall.
He said he has since written a letter to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to send at least 5000 bags of maize for community sale.
AND Mongu District Famers Association Chairman Muwelu Muyumbana has observed that millers have a tendency of imposing their production overhead costs on consumers.
Mr. Muyumbana said it is a well known fact that millers are buying maize at a very cheap price against the K65 set by government hence it was strange for mealie meal prices to continue being on the rise.
He bemoaned that the continued rise in mealie meal prices in Mongu and the Province as a whole was a burden on most people in the community.

Cassava, Millet, yellow maize, sweet potatoes, ( Rape or cabbage) made together with baked kandolo or bananas can be a main meal, learn how to spice up other over looked local products which are easily available and less expensive, i just wonder what it will take to change your mind set Zambians awe sure mwe. When are we going to diversify our diet let’s try to introduce fufu, potatoes, rice, cassava in our meals, these options I have just named are far more nutritious than maize meal….I for one I’m testament to the fact that one can survive without nshima for more than 12 months.

But I always wonder why a normal person should buy a 25 kg bag of mealie meal at 70 K while a 50kg bag of maize is going at 65k. Please people buy a 50 kg bag of maize and gaisha it into Mugaiwa. Mugaiwa is so nutritious than berak fast. If you switch to Mugaiwa the millers will be forced to reduce the prices. There is no need of always crying when the cheap solution is there.
