United Party for National Development Party (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema has appealed to Health Minister Joseph Kasonde to find a lasting solution to the strike action by nurses instead of threatening the nurses.

Speaking during his tour of the UTH this morning to assess the situation at the Hospital, Mr. Hichilema appealed to government to pay the nurses the salary they promised them and clean up all the distortions in the new salary arrangements.

Mr. Hichilema said it is the constitutional right of the nurses to express themselves in the manner they have done and that no one should use brutality or charge them.

He said it is unfortunate that the nurses are not in the wards to help patients, but that it is not their fault that this is happening as government has failed to honor its promise them.

Mr Hichilema said when UPND comes to power their approach to doing things will be different stressing that they will increase the salaries of nurses and other public service workers before increasing the salaries of ministers and the president.

He lamented that Zambians are losing lives due to the carelessness of the PF government which he said has no love for the people.

And the striking nurses found at the hospital complained of being harassed by Police when they are only expressing themselves peacefully.

The nurses have also called for the resignation of their union President Tom Yung’ana accusing him of lacking direction.

And Mr. Hichilema appealed to the nurses to be strong and hold on stating that he is going to put pressure on the government to resolve the problem.

    • Nurses are the most hardworking but least appreciated civil servants. Go to UTH and see for yourself. One nurse attending to 50 patients on night shift. Sometimes the have to clean patients and changed soiled bedding without gloves as these and other necessities run out. Some nurses are forced to buy gloves from their meagre salaries. Please give them what you promised and fire the erring officials who messed up payroll as you claim

    • 1.3 a small penis syndrome is where a guy tries to make himself big and powerful when infact they are a paper tiger! There is nothing in this mans life and accomplishments to prove his worth. What evr his accomplishments we can write on the back of a cigarette pack. H e became UPND leader based on his tribe pushing out more worthy men like Sakwiba Sikota ,Patrick Chisanga,Bob Sichinga ,late Henry Mtonga and many others who stood with Mazoka.H e made his worth from privatisation by short changing the Zambian people and towards 2016 will hammer this point until he cries for mercy. He privatised the hotel that was there before the present sun hotel and later became a shareholder in sun hotel without having declared an interest ! that is dishonourable if not scandalous-

    • Sata and the PF can solve this crisis about pay by cutting Cabinet and politician’s pay by 10%. The money saved can then be given to other lowly paid workers and fund projects. Another thing the government can do is cut down the number of foreign missions abroad in places where the number of Zambians living in these places is less than 5000. For instance I do see any sense in posting a foreign envoy in Turkey when Zambia benefits nothing from that country. In places like west Africa we need only two embassies ,one in Nigeria and the other in Ghana to serve the rest of the area. This can also be replicated in European countries where Zambia does not get much aid from and the number of Zambians living there is less than 5000. If this move is adopted Zambia can save about $100million

    • 1.6 you ask why l sent that msg-because the man suffers from a small penis syndrome-it is obvious-the man has psychological issues -it stems from his upbringing and issues surrounding his parentage

    • @al

Realistically it seems its you who is deluded indeed. Have you looked at the man ‘s CV before you label him ?. Even without privatisation which Sata and his MMD colleagues contracted him to carry out HH had already made his millions working for the square mile in London. At the time when every one looked up to politics to make money he made his through hard work without any political influence of any sort. It is absurd to compare him to other political opportunists you have mentioned including Sata who swindled the tax payer big time.

    • @al
To set the recoed straight the man worked for Lybrand and coopers at the time MMD privatised most government parastatals. Lybrand and coopers won the bid fair and square and tasked HH based on his experience to do the job. The proceeds of privatisation were handed over to Sata and his MMD companions who then shared the money. When RP and PT tried to stop it they were both eliminated.

He became a leader of UPND by winning free and fair elections at the convention. The problem is you read and believe too much the lies that Mumembe and his past paper write. Mumembe wanted a lozi to head UPND just like he now wants Kabimba to head PF after Sata so that he too can be handed power on a silver plate.

Any way like him or hate him Haliesa Haleisa, Habwela Habwela,Hajika…

    • 1.9 was it honourable for your leader to sell the hotel to sun hotel and later aquire shares in the same without declaring an interest prior to the sale? whose interest was he serving -the Zambians? no l very much doubt ! this is why he was against the banning of quoting in dollars because he was protecting his interest in sun hotels. This man has no heart for the country and must never be allowed anywhere near the levers of power and we will keep reminding the people of Zambia which includes the miners in luanshya which includes nurses on how he short changed them when he was appointed receiver-he is an empty suit

    • 1.10 you are re writing history-which elections did he win ? there was an outcry from the tongas that only a Tonga should take over and it led to Sakwiba and Patrick Chisanga who were the 2 vice presidents walking away and for privatisation when we point out that he profited from it we are saying the truth and please challenge my points on sun hotel and if you have time -talk about how he plundered lima bank as well. l have more respect for street vendors who make their money through hard work than for chaps like HH who shoraged the people of Zambia took the golden parachutes and left the workers with an empty bag and then late say vote because lm rich

    • @al
Who owned Lima bank, and the hotel you are referring to? Is not the government under Sata and his MMD colleagues? Who sold these institutions? How could HH sell what he did not own? These institutions you are talking about were government property and when the government decided to sell them they engaged HH to facilitate. He charged them a fee which they agreed to pay. Direct your blame to Sata and MMD as to what happened to the proceeds of privatisation.
How come these people you say were swindled by HH are now willing to with him. If they were bitter about the way he came to lead UPND they would have not been in favour of HH’s policies. Sakwiba himself is UPND’s lawyer to day.Come 2016 you will see Sakwiba standing as an MP under UPND.

      Get your facts right? .

    • @al

You have talked about paying the workers their dues. Whose responsibility was it? The responsibility to pay those workers fell squarely on the MMD the government of the day which sold those properties not HH.

You need to read more to understand the role and responsibility of a privatisation agent before you make irresponsible allegations against HH. If there is anything illegal the man did there would have been a court case against him today, especially to day under Sata. The man HH gives Sata and you sleepless nights because he totally has no case to answer what so ever regarding the way he handled privatisation.

Stop being bitter and learn to accept and use the facts as they are ,not twisting them to suit your misguided agenda

    • @al

Sata was recently challenged to prove that HH was not elected. Imagine the President failed to prove. HH presented the PF and Sata the day and date when HH was elected. The document also showed how many votes HH got compared to other contenders including Sakwiba and Nchete. The way you are twisting the facts about HH ‘s UPND leadership begs the question;how old were you in 2006 when Mazoka died and the three HH, Sakwiba sikota and Baldwin Nchete stood for UPND elections which HH won by big margin?

    • W e entrusted him to sell the nations assets for the benefit of the country and he ended up taking care of himself-how do you buy shares in a company you were entrusted to sell-whose interests was he serving.lf he was eyeing the company then he must have priced it with his interests in mind. You vilify the nchitos who were given share in roan air mine services as payment for legal services during its sale but glorify HH when they both profited in a similar way-we will reminf=d the nationof his greed in the run up to 2016 until he cries for mercy

    • @al,u are posting childish and stuped comments. If i were u,i would have felt ashamed to even continue exchanging words espacialy with one WANZELU coz the guy has beaten u pants down.Mendo Mumwamba.kikiki

  1. With they way we treat nurse who have remained at home how do they expect to attract those that are in the diaspora? It is a game of simple economics. Pay well and you will attract the right caliber of staff.

    • Shem ! PF can you address this problem don’t allow these pipo to make political points out of your slow rate of comflict resolution .

    • @Chinyama. Does PF (Pay Facient) have any skills of conflict resolution at all?

Right now every in PF is wishing the Kabimba GBM issues goes away on its own. MCS cant even address the real problem and is still talking about “endorsements”

    • @Bwana mukubwa,,,To be frank they are letting me down, but I remain hopeful they can manage themselves and concentrate on develpment for once until 2016.

  2. if opposition means condemning the govt of the day when they increase salaries saying they are using Eurobond and on the other hand urge the govt to pay striking workers their demand which is on in the budget jst to win pipo then I would rather be with my UKWA, CNP, SATANA BUFI which ever name u call him and his PF. I mean there is nothing wrong with out calculator man to counsel our nurses with those analysis he keeps talking about. opposition can also mean advising striking workers to get back to work.

    • Noone forced the government to promise 200% they could have spread this over their remaining four years and pay at least 30% and reduce on opening up new missions/positions for relatives and bye elections to beef up their numbers in parliament. If you are intelligent there are many ways Zambia could save money for development and paying Civil Servants other than Eurobond and World Bank, my brother Mwanawasa must be turning in his grave. We have let loose monkeys in a banana plantation.

  3. Nurses are the most hardworking but least appreciated civil servants. Go to UTH and see for yourself. One nurse attending to 50 patients on night shift. Please give them what you promised and fire the erring officials who messed up payroll as you claim

  4. my office orderly gets more “take home pay” than I do. shame on these 1diots who do not respect the effort we used to go through at obtaining the qualifications that enabled us work in these offices. a cadre who is just cleaning my toilet getting more than me, then who is the boss? this rhetoric of bridging the gap is nonsense

    • You still the boss coz u are wasting time blogging while ur office orderly sorts out ur messes up table full of papers, injections under your table calendar and those gloves u hid in that drawer.

  5. HH THINKS THAT HIS PRESIDENT OF ZAMBIA,NOT IN THIS WORLD NOT EVER 2016.TOUR OR NOT U WILL NEVER BE THE PRESIDENT IN JESUS NAME.

    • @KASSY NO no no no! NOT in the Name of JESUS but in the name of SATAn. In Jesus Name every thing is possible just like Sata is the President of Zambia today…!!

    • @MIKE IF YOU DO GOOD TO OTHERS GOD WILL BLESS U BUT FOR HH HAVE NOT SEEN IT,ALL HE WANTS IS TO BE PRESIDENT AND BRING CONFUSION TO THE COUNTRY.

    • HH never paid benefits to my father who worked for him as a tax manager under Grant Thornton. FYI he died not getting his dues. where is the morality here

    • This type of joke ‘jesus’ who promotes hatred that Kassy follows should be avoided at all costs by all peace loving Zambians.

    • Do not use the name of Jesus in vain. Is your pastor one those fake Zambian pastors that have been, and continue to be, deported from Botswana?

    • your president is lucky he is in a game of politics and not in a game of football.
otherwise he would have been substituted a long time ago cos he is a very bad player and lacks strategies.
how will the sick look at him now…..
      future president, MY FOOT!

  6. True, if the poloticians were hyping about 200% salary increase and I only receive 4%, I would be annoyed, just like the nurses are.

    • @saulose, spot on ,Sata’s formula remains the blue print for the Zambian opposition,UNDP,MDD etc it was exellent,Even that Donchi kubeba is currently taught at a Ghanaian university sch of political science as a successful election tool.keep up the Creativeness President Sata, but please sort out your party squabbles firmly, the way we know you.

  7. @KASSY YOUR COMMENT IS MORE THAN USELESS ONE CAN NOT KNOW WHEATHER ITS A CURSE OR A PRAYER OR MAY BE A DRAMMA. OOOKE ALL PF CADRES ARE COMEDIANS

  8. Nurses should just go back for work last year they were give huge salary increment, while other civil servants received peanuts . In my opinion nurses are not Superio to teachers, to me they are just “improved type cleaners or house mades”. Thank you.

  9. What a loser ! Only a mentally challenged individual can believe in this man.He is an opportunist who tries to take advantage of situations.Last time I checked he was caught taking advantage of a sick person by using a wheelbarrow to take him(patient)to the clinic while leaving his car with a full tank by the roadside.

    • The greatest opportunist is one who rides on a 90days promise when he knows he can’t deliver. Gets in State house and all he can do is find relatives to swear-in so that he can peep though the camera and condemn the opposition.

    • you are one of these chaps wiping butts of abasungu in the diaspora. ifwe bene who stays with him are seeing the good things he is doing for his fellow country men. what good have you done for your fellow zambians other than sending ration for your few relatives who are starving?. grow up

    • @miss Saulosi. HH is following Satas foot steps. Sata would go to a petrol filling station with an empty plastic meanwhile he had a full tank in his vehicle at home. He would also board a mini bus while his 3 vehicles would be packed at the Road side. It appears you have a very short memory?

    • Dull man, success comes by taking advantage of every situation. You seem to hate HH but that doesn’t matter. If God decides that HH becomes president, just like he decided to make him rich, who are you to stop him?

  10. Projected Zambian Budget Deficit

The projected expected budget deficit is has widened to gross domestic product GDP .Ministry of Finance needs to work to reduce it to below 4% in the yr. 2014/ 2015 .Looking at the growth rate of the Zambian economy and other economies there is very little scope to raise personal or corporate taxes or Vat ,the three major sources of tax revenue. The rate of taxes are higher than most would afford already and regionally and may go against PF policies of trying to put more money in the people. Widening the net would be helpful but even then it will not be enough to account for deficit so were is the policies being advanced to support yes its noble but see and analyse

  11. Nurses should just go back for work last year they were give huge salary increment, while other civil servants received peanuts . In my opinion nurses are not Superio to teachers, to me they are just “improved type cleaners or house mades”. Thank you.

  12. HH… Just tell us what you want . On one side ‘no government is spending too much on increaments’ on the other ‘ no I will increase salaries before increasing for ministers and president.’ we know your MP’s voted for their salaries to be increased and no one has so far refused to take it as an expression of demonstration.

    • He is simply saying “if you can’t WALK the TALK then DON’T TALK THE WALK.”

In 2011 they promised the 90days.

Today they are promising 200%. When will they learn to tell the truth.

    • Spot on, he is just politicking nothing else nothing new even.We thought he is more creative than using recycled methods to win support while ending up lying.

  13. should we not be talking about first tax planning how we will raise taxes and other forms like environmental and carbon taxes before emphasing the expenditure side thereby creating and adding to gov reserves in anticipation of the capital expenditure flows we have created. Its good by flexing the Receipts and expenditure of the gov will be a priority and reducing the deficit.Should there be a fallout in china as a result of the many investments that Chinese have made back to back with investments here in Zambia, then we will feel the terrible impact.lets learn to see thru and agree.Proportionate increase yes and only revenue driven and people can understand a little to cement the economy and its gains

  14. HH What goes around shall come around one day but with full force. Consider…. you shall be next and what about the patients?

    • I agree with you. HH is making too many promises and they may backfire on him when(not if) he becomes president of Zambia. He should be advised to desist from making many promises. Remember the failed ’90-days’ promises?

  15. What patients need is the return of health workers to duty. It is about saving human life. Money matters require negotiations. It is selfish to paralyze all health services in the country. There is need to complete infrastructure development and recruitment of qualified personnel.

  16. Why blame HH..He’s merely reminding PF what they promised…with their own mouths. FTJ was right Some Zambians especially PF cadres have very short memory. PF wanted to be in GOVT, So let them walk their talk!!

    • With his support for RB, 2016 might not be possible, let him classify RB as a failed prone t and in the past then may be he may stand a chance.

  17. This is a lesson to PF cadres . It is a reminder that lies have consequences! These are the same lies that were told to Barotse64 advocates. The chickens have simply come home to roost!

  18. Ba HH is really a failure and i think his coming to politics was a mistake. Nurses, have been to school just like other people in the Govt. Truthfully, speaking nursing programe is to easy compared to what others who are not complaining have done. ASPIRING PRESIDENT INCINTING NURSES TAKWABA. Gwilani muntu, our relatives are dying chena chilelanda ifya bupuba. NO VOTE FOR HIM

  19. NO VOTE FOR HIM. WE SHALL CONTINUE SUPPORTING PF

  20. I can’t imagine the opposition hh will receive in the event he becomes next Presindent with all these promises. l think it will be worse. l dont what others think.

  21. HH is a scumbag for sure, a cheap minded person. Whats he going to achieve by inciting those who-lays making noise out of selfishness. Did other civil servants complain when the who-lays were awarded heft increament, the answer is ”NO SIR.”

    • The bigest scum bags are Sata and PF. They promise what they can not deliver hence the mess we are currently witnessing. There is more chaos to follow soon under sata. Another huge prise increase is in the pipe line before the end of this year. Just watch the space.

  22. Awe iyi ba hh mwapusa. hh is not original. because. Sata got a container to buy fuel . the was a strike at uth when rb was president l dont remember him opening up his month because it involved peoples lives. hh should lean to love and guide the hatred he has for pf is blinding him and his supporters. shame on him he should have told the nurses to go back to work people were going to like him.

    • @mwine mushi
you sound like an 1diot, you want the nurses to go back for work on empty stomachs while those of the politicians are having overflowing bellies? imagine you were in their shoes, would you give your labour for peanuts?

  23. NO HUMAN CAN STOP HH TO BE PRESIDENT OF THIS NATION.GOD ALONE.IF YOU HATE HIM,TAKE IT OR LEAVE SO MANY ZAMBIANS LOVE HIM.AND NO SINGLE ZAMBIA CAN SAY HH SHOULD NOT COME TO MANSA BECOUSE MANSA IS NOT FOR YOUR MOTHER.NURSES KNOW WHAT THEY WANT.SO PF NIOS STOP BLAMING HH.THIS MINORITY GOVERNMENT IS NOT EVEN GOING ANYWHERE.OUR PIPO SAID THEY WERE TRIBLE THEY REFUSED BUT NOW THE VIP AND KABIMBA ARE IN THE FOREFRONT TELLING US,THIS IS HOW GOD WORKS!
THOSE WHO HAVE EYES LET THE SEE,THOSE WITH EARS LET THEM HEAR.THE MINI-TITANIC IS SLOWLY SINKING.ITS CAPTAIN HAS GONE TO SLUMBER.BUT VIVA , UPND,VIVA HH,VIVA WELL MEANING ZAMBIANS BECAUSE A SKILLED ECONOMIC CAPTAIN IS COMING-HH.YOU HATE HIM WE LOVE HIM.WE KNOW WHAT YOU STAND FOR.THANK GOD ZAMBIA IS FOR ALL ZAMBIANS AND NOT JUST IFYABUKAYA VILLAGE.

    • Meantime develpment is visible here in Livingstone we are greatful, just polish up ba PF so that there is nothing for UNDP to refer to as failure.

  24. Last time I checked Sara as an opposition leader asked and begged the ZRA workers that were on strike to ho back to work when RBB was president that is what I call leadership. Many of you are expecting Sata to be harsh ny sorting out the trouble makers but he has proven to you that he is actually a sober man not the dictator zwd likes telling about to the world when he was in opposition he was fierce because he was burning for Zambiahe now needs to lead not politicking

  25. Expeditiously sort out the nurses so that they can go back to work. Actually all that is required is for the government to pronounce a pledge to them especially from the highest level and that should see them of to the wards. No politician should be blamed for the strike. The devil is happy to see Zambian s hurl insults at HH. The same pipo will troop to him and worship him should he win and turn against the opposition. Shame.

  26. Assuming that the average pay for an enrolled nurse was k3000 then 4% will be something like k120 then there is a new allowance which has been introduced called shift differecial which is 15% of basic bringing total increment to something like k520 then less tax. compounded by the fact that they have patiently waited for this payrise since February. As if not enough somebody miscalculates the 4% for 1.1%. Adding salt to injury the president tells parliament the increment is unprecendented. Then as the last straw the cleaner goes home smiling bcos his salary is now equal to that one of a trained nurse. You can the total confusion.

  27. @hear me & psycha…The minister arranged a meeting they refused which govt official do they want?bwana is their unions they should be spitting on Not the patients, get back to work or be dissiplined.

  28. To incite nurses to strike is certainly not way to go…people’s lives are at stake. Bwana hh should have considered the number of lives that will be lost because of the strike. To play politics with people’s lives is a big miscalculation.
I know they are trying to do politics the Sata’s way but I think they are proving to be BAD students of Sata’s politics. Bwana HH, its a NO for me.

  29. Mr Hichilema, we understand that you are a politician and you are trying to got good favor from the masses by letting them hear what they want to hear but, we are taking about the lives for the people who are seeking medical attention from the university teaching hospital and other clinics alike. those people need help and the nurses can assist them.
Mr Hichilema you should have told the nurses that you will intercede for them to the government and not encourage them to continue with there strike.

  30. naimwe ba government can you honor your promises, because if any lives are lost during this period that the nurses are on strike then it will be in your hands and you know how agitated this situation is going to get if you don’t stop sitting on your ears.
