Sundowns sink Zesco United

Share

Hosts Zesco United have finished bottom of the four-team pre-season tournament staged in Ndola after succumbing to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns in their final match at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Saturday.

Winless-Zesco had lost the opener 1-0 to DR Congo side Don Bosco before Power Dynamos thumped the Ndola side 2-0 on day-two of the mini-league competition.

In the two teams’ final match, substitute Percy Tau handed Sundowns a 56th minute lead after scoring with his first touch connecting a low pass from Surprise Moriri.

Eleven minutes later Maybin Mwaba equalised for Zesco after chipping the ball over advancing Kennedy Mweene before Teko Modise poked in Sundowns’ second goal from close range in the 84th minute.

Anthony Laffor completed the rout with a solo effort goal two minutes into additional time- beating four defenders before rounding up the keeper prior to walking into the net with the ball.

Zesco are preparing for the 2014 CAF Confederation Cup.

  1. So sad. Even at our own backyard negative results. Something wrong with our players attitude & character whn in action. Never blame our coaches

  2. The 3rd goal scored by the South Africans was very embarrassing. The striker took on the entire Zesco defense which ended up colliding and injuring each other in the process before he rounded up the goalkeeper and literally walked with the ball into the open net. He didn’t even celebrate the goal, he just calmly picked the ball from the net and gave it to the dazzled Zesco players who seemed not to know what was happening. A great individual effort it was.

  3. Zambian clubs can not compete and compare with South African clubs in terms of sponsorship. The S.A teams are coached by coaches who are well paid an knowledgeable with the latest soccer techniques. If FAZ does not make remedial measures, the soccer standards will plummet further.
It is really embarrassing to see ZESCO players being made to look like school boys by Sundowners.
My appeal to ZESCO management is that they must get a coach who is experienced and avoid experimenting with former players and hire them as coaches.
