Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema has said that the demand for a new constitution from the Patriotic Front (PF) government should not be left to political parties and the civil society alone.
Mr. Hichilema said that all Zambians should unite and get focused on the constitutional subject especially that it has become clear that the ruling PF is not willing to deliver a new constitution going by president Michael Sata’ statement that people talking about the new constitution should be ignored.
Mr. Hichilema said this was why all well meaning political parties, the church, the civil society and the nation at large must galvanize to ensure the PF government is not necessarily put in position of choice whether to deliver a new constitution or not.
In an interview with Qfm news this afternoon, the UPND leader also charged that the PF government must deliver a new constitution because it belongs to the people of Zambia not the ruling party.
He said this was also why people in the country should refuse to be digressed to other issues that will allow the coming up of a new constitution to be delayed even further.
And the opposition leader has maintained that the manner in which the ruling PF is dealing with the current constitutional making process is a further confirmation that it is a party that has allegedly lied on many other issues.
Only now that you have come to understand the real meaning of Don’t Kubeba. Very gullible Zambian are! You haven’t seen enough yet.

HH is absolutely right about the constitution issue. No one is safe under Sata including those supporting him today. Sata has no permanent friends. Once he feels he does not need you he chucks you out to dance to his music and brutality.
So whether you are in PF or not, the only way to guarantee you and family from suffering under Sata’s immense abuse of power when you are nolonger useful to him, is to support the call for new constitution to be enacted before he turns against you. If we could address production, sales and security of our copper as a nation, just like Botswana manages and controls its diamonds. Zambia would be rich, who ever the leader is. We have forgotten about our elephant in our room, copper. Whilst we are ever blinking, they are busy taking away our main source of funds. A good constitution will empower citizens to challenge MPs, Ministers, senior government officials without being threatened. The courts of law/judiciary will look to the law – constitution for direction and NOT the appointing authority. ACC and the police will not wait for a person to be out of power before they are investigated and arrested for crimes. Yes, ignorance is our enemy.

At Chinyama LMA died during the days of Kaunda and the current head of state. How could Chiluba pay workers who were producing nothing. The company was bankrupt. The same will happen if you re-introduce Indeco, ZNS , Mulungushi Textiles etc. Privatision is the answer. Indeco failed to build and maintain a sigle shopping mall in its 20 years of existence but private companies have managed more than five malls in 5 years. LMA was assembling cars to sell to MPs and other Indeco employees. That is like owning a bakery and giving all the bread you bake to your relatives free of charge.

Well and good to keep prodding all Zambians to demand for a new constitution. However the biggest omission is that most people in the rural areas are not privy to what this new constitution is all about coupled with the fact that the discussions on the constitution are mostly in cities or among those along the line of rail. The PF has come out clear and is backing out on delivering on the new constitution thus the onus is on opposition political parties and civil society organizations to interpret and share with the people the high lights of the new constitution!
