Lusaka Mayor Mulenga Sata has appealed for support and strengthened ties in science and technology programs between South Korea and Zambia.
The Mayor was speaking when he featured on an exclusive interview at YTN Science television in Seoul, South Korea.
This is according to a statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today by Lusaka City Council Acting Public Relations Manager Habeenzu Mulunda.
Councillor Sata said South Korea has shown over the decades that it was one of the up coming powerhouses in information technology, hence Zambia would benefit a great deal if strong relationships were to be promoted especially in science and technology.
Councillor Sata said Zambia was already enjoying good bilateral and economic relations with South Korea and hoped that the two countries would widen areas of cooperation in trade, natural resource development, agriculture as well as science and technology.
“South Korea has developed quite fast over the past decade this is all because of the serious investment the country has made in science and technology. As a country, Zambia would benefit a great deal if we can partner with countries like South Korea in exchange of science content especially in schools, colleges and universities,” he said.
Councillor Sata further indicated that Lusaka City Council had great passion for the grass root and that the council was in the process of revamping the community halls in all the constituencies for the purpose of supporting and implementing educational as well as developmental programs.
“With the support of YTN Science television we would like to introduce and extend this program to community centers because as you may be aware most of our people are not exposed to science and technology, so we would want this program to be rolled out to the townships and peri-urban areas. And in this regard we will bank on continued support and cooperation from the Korean government through the YTN Science television and to expedite this relationship I offer myself as an ambassador for YTN in Zambia,” he said.
Councillor Sata pledged to rekindle the already established relationship between YTN Science television with the Zambian media oraganisations for the purpose of promoting science and technology through television programs.
“I am aware that YTN Science television screw visited Zambia in 2012 and established the relationship with our national broadcaster Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC), all we need is to rekindle the relations. We also need to involve other television stations such as Muvi TV, TBN, Prime TV and Mobi in airing these science programs so that we can capture a wide audience,” he said.
And YTN Science President Dr. Heelim Ryu assured the Mayor that the station would be readily available to provide science content to the Zambian community as the country was striving to develop young scientists.
Dr. Ryu said YTN Science television had a lot of programs which have already been translated from Korean into English and they were available for sharing.
Dr. Ryu reiterated the need to continue promoting the relationship between the Zambian media and YTN Science in order to have a consistent following of programs.
“Our television station is ready to help in which ever way you want, all we need to know is what content does your country want so that we can prepare something which of help and interest to your nation,” he said.
Meanwhile, earlier the mayor toured the Land and Housing (LH) Corporation Limited, the company which has been entrusted by the Korean government to build the New Wiyre City District.
LH Corporation is engaged in urban land use planning and development, consultancy as well as project management and feasibility studies for the government.
Speaking during the tour of the corporation LH Director Mr. SooHong Park said the corporation has approved a development plan up to 2017 and has embarked on constructing 43, 580 households.
“The corporation has been undertaking government projects since 1960 and it has done a lot of consultancy in housing development as well as financing and buidling most of the houses within Korea,” he said.
Mr. Park said LH Corporation had a lot of experience in housing projects and that it has undertaken such projects in other countries like Tanzania, Indonesia, China and Vietinum.
Mr. Park further informed the Mayor that if there was any need of help in housing LH Corporation was readily available to offer such advise.
And Councilor Sata noted that although Zambia and South Korea shared similar historical background it was gratifying to see how Korea has developed in all the sectors in a few years.
Councilor Sata said Lusaka City Council would take advantage of the newly opened embassy in South Korea to promote exchange programs so that such developmental plans can be replicated not only in Lusaka but Zambia at large.
in what and whose capacity is this boy there in terms of science and technology?,ZAMBIA TWASEBANA,I THOUGHT THE CHAP WOULD BE BENCHMARKING HOW COUNCILS RUN IN KOREA AND COLLECTION OF GABBAGE
Baby Ukwa
Start by cleaning the streets of dirty Lusaka before you start jumping on grand ideas.
To start talking about science and technology when you don’t even have public toilets in Lusaka and the town as dirty as a pig house is like trying to go to the moon on a bicycle.
Cleaning the streets is hard work….he is only interested in “get rich quick” schemes mind you this silly daddy’s boy is in S.Korea at the invitation of a Korean construction company…just don’t be surprised when the next govt construction project is single sourced to a Korean company….there is no such thing as a free lunch.
MAYBE THE MINISTER OF HEALTH IS IN GEAR 4 SLEEPING. OR WHICHEVER MINISTER IS CONCERNED WITH SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY.
Some one is closing his eyes so that he does know what is going on. Athough that is not how God operates
2016 come fast please i have appetite for this BOY
How long does it take to “woo” Investors?
Guy Scott said ‘it will take as long as it takes’.
Mulenga is placed in South korea strategically so that he able to jet to Israel to check on his dad and back without Zambians knowing anything.
It is interesting to note that we have unsolicited updates from Councillor Mulenga’s trip and yet we have no updates on the Head of State’s working trip to Israel!
@wanzelu wasting taxpayer s money unwisely,
Where is the Minister of Commerce? What capacity is this corrupt “Daddy’s boy” commenting on National issues….he is now turning into his step mother who is a self appointed minister of health.
Do we have Minister of Commerce?
ZANIS are quick to issue a bulletin on what Mulenga Sata is doing in S. Korea but they have not uttered a single word on what Sata has been up to for a couple of weeks he has been in Israel. ZANIS are a failure as a news agency, they are just PF cadres.
@The London Eye
Ala walasa good observation. The Head of State who has allegedly gone to Israel to meet potential investors is dead quiet even government has no clue on the whereabouts of the Presidency. As Dora Siliya rightly put it, no network where they are residing. Poor George Chella aletencha Ba Presido no time for Facebook updates.
ZANIS or ZANA as it was called under UNIP has always been a government mouthpiece a branch of ministry of information. ..even in a Western country like UK or USA you can’t expect it to start reporting contrary to government agenda.
Haters zambians you never speak good for your brothers , let mulenga exhibit his ability that other didn’t know about , surelly I support any one who speaks progress even if he was any one , don’t envy anyone jelous is a disease that kills the mind and keeps in bondage , go mulenga we are seeing why your fellow councelors wanted you to be mayor
Another reason why people should elect a city mayor..who does he answer to?
They appointed him so they can get richer whilst your mother, father, brothers and sisters wallow in filthy streets. ..USE THAT THING YOU HAVE BETWEEN YOUR EARS AND BEHIND YOUR EYES. ..IT’S THERE FOR A REASON.
WAKE UP FROM YOUR DOCILITY! !
Leave Mulenga alone baf.cala, why every time istead of looking at economic issues, every time you have to critise
Haters have been left in Jejune… lol via Mpombo’s dictionary
When it comes to transfer of technology between countries, I agree with what Mr. Mulenga Sata would like to see happen between Zambia and South Korea. Though the idea is great, history has it that we have a lot of Zambians that have lived in developed countries and have seen how things are done but are not able to implement some of those ideas once they are in decision making positions. Mulenga went to school in Los Angeles, California. I bet for the time that he was in Los Angeles, he saw how services are run and provided to the Angelinos. Notable are Trash Collection, Water Distribution, and Sewage Management. In my oppinion, he must invest his time and effort at improving on these three areas. One Zambia One Nation.
Transfer of technology can work only if is preceded by transfer of education, knowledge and working practice. Who is mad enough to suggest that ZESCO should operate Nuclear power-plant?
I think it would be wise to study how South Korea rose from being an insignificant economy to its present heights – the reason might just surprise you.
“…revamping the community halls…”
BA SATA MWAICE INSTEAD OF COMMUNITY HALLS MAYBE THE COUNCILS EMBARK ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF STATE OF THE ART THEATRES WHICH WOULD INCORPORATE COMMUNITY HALLS, OPRAH, STANDUP COMEDIES, DRAMA PLAYS, TRADITIONAL AND CULTURAL DANCES, AND OTHER SHOWS SUCH AS JAZZ, RUMBA, KALINDULA AND POP MUSIC, ETC. THIS IS ONE OF THE WAYS HOW COUNCILS ARE EVEN GOING TO RAISE REVENUE. IN OTHER COUNTRIES THOS CONGOLESE MUSICIANS ETC STAGE THEIR SHOWS IN PARKS, CONCERT HALL (THEATRES) AND NOT IN 5STAR HOTELS AS IT IS IN ZAMBIA.
Peter, you certainly qualify to be “standup comedies”.
HEHEHE Mr Mulenga just say ba South Korea you are adavanced in technology help us out, and not exchange bra bra bra!!!! What technology can Zambia exchange with Korea
kokoliko, be reminded or informed that at one time, Zambias economy was above the Koreans,we are a country of 13 million population, what the f*C IS WRONG,poverty mentality is the issue
THATS MY MAYOR, VERY INSIGHTFUL, OPEN MINDED…HE HAS ACCESS TO THE MONEY BUT CHOOSES TO SAVE IN PUBLIC OFFICE, CASTRO AND THE BANDAZ CHOSE A LIFE OF ENTERTAINMENT… THIS MAN IS HEADED FOR GREATER HIGHTS, WATCH THE SPACE FOR MORE…
Has he stopped his dog-selling business?
Why do we have to keep on insisting on updates from the president’s “holiday”. Is it not already too clear that the president has not gone out to relax but to seek serious medical attention……ignore the government lies about the holiday. Do they think we are children to be lied to. Certainly I am not one!!
1. HAS HE ANY KNOWLEDGE OR SCIENCE APPLICATION NOWHOW?
2. WHAT CAN HE DO WITH SCIENCE, OR WHAT DOES HE WANT TO ACHIEVE?
3. LEAVE THINGS TO THE EXPERTS, RESTRICT URSELF TO COUNCIL MATTERS.
YOU KNOW IT IS VERY EASY TO PROVIDE A SOLUTION WHEN YOU DO NOT KNOW
THE PROBLEM, AND THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE IN ZAMBIA TODAY.
Yes he has, that of rearing and selling puppies!
There are no policies and procedures under this government. Any one can be anything as long as they are PC. Mulenga Sata is by no means not supposed to be doing the job which falls under the job description of the Ministrer of science and technology unless he is there on his own and at his own expenses. Alas We all know it is highly unlikely that this akantemba government would allow him for pay his way out. At the end of the day tax payers are paying for this guy malingering instead of pumping the money into expanding and developing our sewage and water system
There we go!!
The Zambian way…ever critising…never reasoning!
One Zambia…diverse views.
Teye nayo!!!!!
In that what Mulenga is saying is good; but as a mayor he should be ashamed of the dirt and filth that cover the streets of Lusaka and the vendors and misconduct there; kido clean up the city and we will be happy with you, get the vendors off the streets and we will hold you in high esteem: If ebola has to break out here, you will be the one to answer for it as no one knows where all those people go to relieve themselves:
You can also stop what you doing may join politicks and be an mp for muchinga , if what you are doing is not helping out then start something more marketable than just be a complainer, for all you r life learn to think progressively that is why you have that head
