First Republican President Dr Kenneth Kaunda has appealed to Government to consider extending bursaries and financial aid to students at private universities.

Dr Kaunda said private universities are playing a critical role in supplementing Government’s efforts in the provision of tertiary education.

Dr Kaunda was speaking in Lusaka this morning during the 7th graduation ceremony for Cavendish University held under the theme ‘Quality Education with a Difference.’

448 graduands were gowned bringing the total number of Cavendish graduates to 2,500 since inception.

“Bursary scheme for our students in private universities is essential. It should be noted that the private universities in the country have carried on their shoulders an equal burden of providing tertiary education across the board to all eligible Zambians hence our continued request to the government to extend financial aid and bursaries to eligible Zambian students enrolled in private universities,” Dr Kaunda said.

He added, “I must hasten to say, at Cavendish University we continue to set our standards very high and we are proud today to send out into the world another big crop of graduands that will fly the Cavendish flag high.”

Dr Kaunda said urged the graduands keep the focus and continue with their hard work.

“I want to focus my address to the graduating class of 2014. First and foremost, I extend my congratulations to all the graduands. Today marks the phase of the end of your pursuits at one level but yet only to mark the start of another journey,” Dr Kaunda said.

And Cavendish University Zambia Prof Ram Chandra announced that Cavendish is planning to go launch programme in Engineering, Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy, Agriculture Education, Biotechnology, Cavendish Community College Programme, Cavendish Bachelor Preparatory and Waste Management Programme.

“All these areas are very important for the growth of the country. The time will not permit to touch upon all these areas in detail but I will definitely ouch upon the issue of waste management. High standards of living has become synonymous with high generation of huge amount of garbage and discarded material. The urban societies are generating mountains of used aluminum canes, plastic bags and boxes, glass bottles etc. dumping waste material in open spaces is not the solution. A good quality of life can be maintained with much less consumption of material and energy. We have to start a right kind of education to teach masses for the sustainable development,” Professor Chandra said.

  1. most Zambians on this platform talking about the
constitution are dull.if the document is not
important as some of u say why did they decide
to pump in money into something that is less
important. what has made it to be a less
important today. they can’t tell us it has
contentious articles when I have not seen it.lets
have it and edit it if necessary.kibimba is not
government and neither is Sata. most of PF
sympathizers are naturally dull just like there
master.I say so because mostly they rush into
commenting even on things they least
understand.u are talking about something serious,
in response someone is talking abt food.let’s get
serious for once. I need the draft constitution so
that certain things are changed. the Presidential
powers are too much.public resources are…

    • @king shaka
diye nchito, trying to look and sound educated while expressing oneself in other people`s language,,, black people!! yaba, instead of addressing real issues with facts and the truth a thing which can move the race forward, the nation forward busy looking at darkness and seeing light,,, black people must be cursed; damn!!

    • No No Ba KK don’t ask for bursaries for these fikopo from private universities they even admit them with 33points. Only UNZA and Apex deserve bursaries

    • It’s again the problem with our dark skins. Scorched under the sun and fried up brains that don’t want us to see others do well. The curse of the dark skin. How can people be happy with one university serving a country of millions who are eligible to further their education?

    • The inventor of the dual core processor is black. Head of the US is black, you are the only clowns that are cursed, nga bana mi lowa do not include us all.

    • In case you all didn’t know,kk is chairman of this university,to me,that is more of a business statement than it is a noble one.

    • @Nubian Princess
Kwati bena eba mano. You have a very serious problem. You are the reason most of us do not want to join Zambian associations in the U.S. You are insolent, you are a liar, you collect information about others, twist it, and make it public. You have such a dark heart. Sick Sauliso is right.

    • Nubian princess: kanshi what is going on with you? How can you call bonse ifikopo just because they went to a private university. Did you know that the university of zambia will not accept a student with distinction in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, History, Commerce etc if they have a grade equivalent to 45% or less in English? And i have seen this at unza. Are you telling me that such a student chikopo just because he never went to unza? this is the problem with your type of thinking. You deprive and filter out potential isaac newtons, einsteins, noam chomskys by virtue of a language that is not even yours by decent. I thought you were a nubian princess who would understand these things seeing how rich the nubian culture and civilization is. there is no dull

    • there is no dull person, only bad education systems which dont function as they should. a real education makes you self aware. it does not program or mass produce you like cars out of an assembly line all having the same type of logic/operation. Real education builds you up from within and uses disciplines such as history, math, physics to make you more aware. Physics is not the goal, it is but a small mean to the goal. There is nothing new that you can learn. all the knowledge that you will ever have is all stored up inside you at birth. You understand because you already know. thats why the word UNDER stand. meaning the stand (knowledge, principle) is already there, and you are just going under it to comprehend it more. Buts its always already there.

    • It’s only the truth and I ain’t ashamed of saying it! We are egoistic, selfish and don’t see sense even when it’s in capitals and bold letters. Why is that no matter where in the world – far flung places around the world where you find black skinned people their mentality is the same and are always at the bottom of the pile and the ecosystem? Is it just a coincidence? Be it in Australia, Europe, Far East, America, Madagascar or even if we all started afresh on another planet and took 10 pregnant black women, 10 pregnant white women, 10 pregnant Japanese women and all to bear their kind and then these women were brought back to earth and babies left to be looked after by some robots. The black ones will quickly develop the bad traits. It’s just the curse of the black skin….

    • May be it is because Africa is shaped like a question mark ( ? ) We don’t know whether we coming or going ?

    • ZAGAZE

The point you have raised is very valid,a cousin from the village travelled to look for a place at UNZA got distinctions in all papers but got satisfactory in English. He was denied a place and the guy wanted to do medicine.Went to Zcas, did ACCA BSc in two years.
      Our system is so mediocre.
When i came to do my degree here, they did not even want to see my Kalubale results. Ifyabupubafwe we need an overhaul.

    • @one hit wonder – did you know that perception is reality.did you know that science has shown that DNA can be altered by perception. If you doubt what am writing, read the work of Dr.Bruce Lipton. There is no curse of the black skin. How else would you explain the great civilizations of the africans, the dogon people, the dynasties of egypt (dont be fooled that egypt has always been arabs),the monomutapa kingdoms long before the white man even had a window in his home or ever read a book?I gave an example of how we fail to excel ourselves because a criteria has been determined for us to decide who does what in our society (unza and F grade in english). But why is this happening? because we let in the enemy thinking they were friends.they raped and ravaged our societies and way of life

    • We are at war and while the europeans pay reparations to each other for the damages they have done to each other, they still keep the black man down and we willingly let him because slowly but surely our way of life is dying. And you the young ones dont want to keep these old ways and therefor you lose identity. A man who does not know who he is can never be innovative or creative to the fullest. he will always operate at very low efficiencies. and so you think with a degree they give you that you have actually made it when in actual fact you can do more, like our ancestors did if only you were allowed to practice your culture at all times,in all situations and all circumstance. For this is the real meaning of freedom. we aint free, and when you aint free, you cant do nothing constructive

    • Nubian Princess, is One hit wonder your husband. There is something seriously psychologically wrong with both of you today.

  2. That’s Kaundanomics manje ka. What is sustainable is student loans for those wishing to go to private university. They are private because they do not rely on state funding. If we are struggling to service the few universities we have in the country, where is the money going to come from? besides why would you want to supplement the rich unless you want to offer government scholarships to poor students to study at private institutions?

    • Man you have a valid point. Ba mudala Ba KK bali musocialism iyapwa kale elo bale fwya abanabo ba pange same mistake ya kuchita subsidise aba kankala. For Private Universities student loans are the way out. We have lamentably failed to run UNZA and CBU how do we bail out Cavendish?

  3. Private universities should focus on improving the quality of their education and training, instead of wasting time on things that cant happen.

  4. The most important statement of the year coming from a wiseman. Hon Minister of Ed please take note.

    • It’s a multi-coloured blanket made in Scotland which is sometimes used to make kilts. Kilts are what Scottish men wear mostly in summer and look like skirts and it is rumoured they have nothing their bursaries.

  5. It’s a multi-coloured blanket made in Scotland which is sometimes used to make kilts. Kilts are what Scottish men where mostly in summer an look like skirts and it is rumoured that they have nothing under their bursaries.

  6. So kaunda wants govt to give burseries to students at Cavendish, unilus, zambia open, northrise, copperstone, sylva, chreso, rusangu, city, africa etc. And what criteria will be used to award the funding to students in these institutions where academic excellence at enrollment is not an factor?mr kk muleibwelamo mufintu fimo even if it’s old age.

  7. Thinking that you deserve a basary because you are at Unza is sinking too low. We all know the quality of some graduates that come from there and their level of thinking. That money is tax payers money not your fathers money. It is just a previlege not a right.
My daughter was not accepted at UNZA yet she had 10 points in the School of education. Some people with 18 points were accepted. We know what goes on there.
Dont habour a spirit of selfishness understand that when you think you are intelegent you may be very dull. Thats why you think only you should benefit from government money. All wisdom comes from God and you must appreciate that
