The Ministry of Health has installed a fixed thermal scanner at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport to automatically detect any traveler with suspected Ebola.

And the Ministry has disclosed that the installation of a similar scanner at Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International airport in Ndola is near completion.

Ministry of Health Spokesperson Pauline Mbangweta said the scanners are in addition to the portable hand held thermal scanners that were purchased earlier and distributed to border posts.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health says it has continued to be vigilant and has heightened its surveillance at all points of entry to prevent the spread of Ebola in the country.

  1. Correction ba LT!
Thermal scanners at Airports are used to detect feverish passengers! Blood tests are later done to establish the cause of the fever! Thermal scanners don’t pick germs like Ebola virus! Remember that this surveillance method is NOT 100% effective but it helps. Incubation period is 2 – 21 days. One may still pass through undetected while still in the incubation period, I.e. before developing symptoms like fever! This is the reason why multiple levels of interventions are required.

    • Yaba, Zambians always have to object to everything. We have a lot of “Mr know it alls” in Zambia.
We all know that multiple interventions are required to detect Ebola. but this is the beginning of the detection at airports. This machine is just used to detect fevers, then the passengers will be pulled away for further screening. Atleast the government is doing something about it, had they not installed this, you would have been the same mouth condemning them for not installing the scanner. If Ebola wants to make it to Zambia, believe me, it will, with or without multiple intervention points. But such efforts reduce the risk. So instead of trying sound like a smarta$$ here just because your ka flag is foreign, lets commend the government for the efforts they are implementing to protect…

    • Ba kaponya$$, Did you see how misleading the title is?
The average Zambian brain is interpreting this literally.
Thank you Muwe for making that clarification!

  2. Funny how someone would actually put a negative on this comment when it is absolutely true.Good job though from the ministry at least.
