Three time winners Zesco United reached the2014 Barclays Cup semifinals on Saturday following a 2-0 win over a brave Mighty Mufulira Wanderers side at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.
Mighty had missed real chances before midfielder Maybin Mwaba headed Zesco in front on 22 minutes after he was set up by Jackson Mwanza.
Mwanza graduated from provider to scorer when he doubled Zesco’s lead on the nick of half time with a solo effort after dribbling past Wanderers keeper Daniel Phiri.
The Division One North side missed a chance to equalize as Taonga Bwembya saw his power shot hit the crossbar in the 30th minute.
Wanderers were the first one to create a serious opportunity with striker Brian Ambungeni heading slightly over the bar after four minutes.
In the second half, Mighty fruitlessly tried to fight back but their best was not good enough to crack George Lwandamina’s Zesco in this lunch time kickoff match.
Later at Nkoloma Stadium, Napsa Stars joined Zesco in the last four after edging Lusaka Dynamos 1-0 in the second quarterfinal tie.
Ivorian Jean Paul Simao scored the decisive goal for the 2012 Barclays Cup winners.
