GOVERNMENT says there is need to clean up the Bursaries Committee to rid it of corruption allegations.

Minister of Education, Science and Vocational Training John Phiri says that he has received complaints that some undeserving students have been awarded bursaries at the expense of genuinely needy scholars.

“We have given the bursaries committee guidelines, I have asked them to give me a report on the allocation of the bursaries,’’ he said.

Dr Phiri said the findings of the report from the Bursaries Committee will be made public and Government will only take the next step once the report is out.

  1. A welcome development indeed! Those found guilty should be handed down stiffer punishments to deter would-be offenders. These criminals deprive the poor the sure escape route from the stranglehold of poverty. Cage them and throw away the key!

  2. ARM CHAIR PROPAGANDA. A PHIRI ANABWERA………..KUCHOKA KUHARARE

GET RID OF IREEN CHIRWA.. NDIMWE AMOZI STUDENTS SPOKE ALREADY

THAT IS BULLSHIT. BURSARIES OFFICE IS NEXT TO YOUR OFFICE. YES WHILE THE IDEA IS OK, JUST WALK IN THERE AND GET THE DATA YOURSELVES BEFORE THEY DOCTOR IT.
IN FACT IT IS ALSO LEARNT THAT YOUR CHILD OR RELATIVE ARE AMONG THE NOT DESERVING CHILDREN AT THE EXPENSE F POOR.

I HAVE ASKED AND /OR ENCOURAGED THE SOLDIERS AND STUDENTS TO STAGE A REVOLUTION AND YOU DR PHIRI WILL BE AMONG THE PEOPLE TO BE LOCKED UP.

  3. A Phir an Bwera, that is just arm chair propaganda.
    step one.

    1. Ask Ireen Chirwa to step down
    2. Then demand the immediate lists print out of the all students who got bursaries
    3. Screen their against the parents and see who is who?
    4. Compare with the data or details from UNZA just in case they faked the details when applying if found that they faked, scrap them off
Dr Phiri, If you are not smart on this one, believe me, the spirit of the dead will haunt you

Soldiers and students will soon stage a revolution which I thin is long overdue.
You guys wasted resources on BYE election and now you have no money for future leaders who will stear the nation to the next dimension.

    REVOLUTION IS THE SOLUTION NOW.
    SOLDIERS WAKE UP MULI NDWIIIIIIIII

  4. Sadly, this is the Zambia I know: We wait for things to boil over before we address a crisis. It is amazing that one is not one too many in the spirit of conduct in
Zambian circles and practice. This state of affairs has been symptomatic since the late 80’s onwards and despite numerous demonstrations and near-violent protests nothing tangible was ever done. Now we wait to see whether this will be the end of it or if we will be blaming the next government for the same rot.

  5. Bursaries committee has been corrupt through and through for a long time now. Mwanawasa cleaned it up briefly but then after his demise, corruption crept in again. I was denied a 100% bursary for 3 consecutive years I was at CBU despite having recommendation from the social welfare department and only awarded in the 4th year after Mwanawasa ordered a shake up at the institution. Meanwhile those with connections or money were secretly meeting bursaries officials at lodges and pubs near the campus for business transactions and were awarded 100% schemes. Anybody from CBU remembers Mr. Silwamba? A very corrupt bursaries official who never got fired. This country is retrogressive.

  6. reactive all the time and not proactive. even then i suspect nothing will be done after 2 weeks zambians will be back to normal again. this is what we have been and this is what the politicians have taken advantage of.

  7. Really enough is enough. We cant have a country where only the rich get it all. The poor are becoming even poorer while the rich are growing richer. Can we continue like this? No no….why having a child of PS, Minister, etc on the bursary while the child from shangombo, kaputa , Nabwalya is left out? Guys the PF, be warned that enough is enough and soon people will rise against you if you will not clean up the Bursary.

Peace and Prosperity to Mother Zambia.

  8. The gov’t needs to understand its power to Order Reports by a given date.

You don’t wait for an institution to take their own time. Within 21 days should have been the order.

This might end up on the same disappointing timeline of the amended constitution.

Until then, watch this space is what they have actually implied.

  9. IT’S TRUE THOSE GUYS THERE ARE SO CORRUPT THAT I WAS DENIED A PHD SCHOLARSHIP TO RUSSIA EVEN AFTER GENUINELY ATTAINING IT. REPORTED THE ISSUE TO THE PERMANENT SECRETARY EDUCATION BUT STILL NO RESULT. THEY USE PEOPLE TO WIN SCHOLARSHIPS THEN THEY AWARD THEM TO THEIR RELATIVES OR BIG MONEY SPENDERS. THOSE PEOPLE THERE AT BURSARIES ARE CORRUPT AND THEY SHOULD ALL LEAVE. BUSY AWARDING BURSARIES TO MINISTERS CHILDREN WHEN POOR PEOPLE ARE THERE STRUGGLING TO THE POINT OF COMMITTING SUICIDE. IT HURTS ME A LOT IN THAT WAS ONCE A VICTIM OF THERE CORRUPT PRACTICES.
