Zambia consolidated second place in Group F after a 1-0 away win over Mozambique on Saturday afternoon in Maputo.

The win sees Zambia move to 8 points, three more than third positioned Mozambique and one behind leaders Cape Verde who host bottom placed Niger this evening in Praia.

Mozambique gave Zambia a first half scare in an opening 45 minutes that they dominated when Manihno failed to connect with a close-range effort in the 42nd minute with goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene beaten.

Zambia however had one chance in the first half in the 31st minute when defender Christopher Munthali ‘s bullet header went wide off a Rainford Kalaba cross.

Mozambique then won a dubious penalty in the 58th minute for an Emmanuel Mbola handball that never was.

Elias Pelembe stepped up to take the resultant penalty but his Mamelodi Sundowns team mate Mweene saved the effort.

Zambia sealed the three points in the 66th minute when striker Given Singuluma finished off a neat pass from his TP Mazembe clubmate Kalaba.

Honour Janza’s side now turn their attention to Cape Verde on Wednesday needing just a draw in Ndola to see them return to the scene of their 2012 success in Equatorial Guinea this January.

    • Something strange here. Zambia won Africa Cup, just when new government came into power…
Again they go back to E. Guinea with new UPND government. I think they will win it again.

    • How can your dedicate a match to someone who lied to you that he was fit as a fiddle for 5 months and on his last trip lied to you that he was going to London for a basic check up!

    • Even if Zambia lose 10-0, they have already qualified by beating Mozambique. This is based on head to head Zambia having drawn and won against them. Kipeto, so no worries about the wednesday game

  1. Myles Sampa should have gone along with the boys for boostele so they could have won with a great magnitude of goals

    Chao

  2. i dont understand why you people hated Sata so much, all these activities were supposed to be put off for at least 90days,, am worried for kabimba, at least Sata was mourned for weeks,,, kabimba the most hated zambian by zambians might be mourned for seconds

    • Amafi ama comment lyonse kabiyo uko kolwe iwe it’s football not politicking ne chisungu cha mubwalwa machende iwe.
      Zambia well done

    • @Ndobo, sorry that someone had to insult you in that way. I really want to stay out of it, because that “Mwila” must be lost to find himself here.

    • Awe ba Mwila, insele twakana. Say what you wish to say and back your point with sound reasoning. Insults wont help us understand each other. There are no enemies here. There’s just freedom of speech which comes with responsibility. We’re all trying to figure out what’s good for our nation, and at this point, everyone, including you, must be heard, but please, not that way.

  3. A few observations to FAZ, jersey must be improved upon, it looks like a ZAWA game scout uniform. To the technical bench, a lot of disjointed passes, very weak shots on goal especially from Mayuka. Mweene, good in goal but should avoid over reacting by shouting at his team mates, he is doing well to keep them alert but may be over doing it. A few confidence issues by the players like releasing passess very quickly even before monitoring position of the guy to receive the ball. Set pieces must be practiced, shooting on goal must be practiced.Otherwise, great result, keep it up

  4. Read the rules of the game. Zambia has already qualified. Assuming Zambia looses on Wednesday against c verde and the mambas win on Wednesday, then both teams will be tied on 8 points each. What then comes to play is the head to head record and Zambia has 4 points against 1 for the mambas. Invest in sports reporters please.

    • For now they have qualified on head to head assuming they loose and Mozambique win on Wednesday. However any thing more than a lose Will be a bonus

  5. the game was a disaster, we survived by the skin of our teeth, defense uncoordinated, no midfield,if Given gets injured the front line will have to depend on luck. the squad is great and young they need to do more drills, set pieces and passes.other wise big ups to the TP Mazembe boys that was an excellent pass by (if not a fluke) Kalaba and a good one time by Given

  6. Zombies that display by the national team was appalling, I watched the 20 minutes of that it was all misplaced passes…teams like Mozambique were once upon time used by Chipolopolo as canon fodder BUT now the opposition has improved whilst we are wallowing in mediocrity like Sata’s PF. As for the horrid jersey the empty suits have short-changed us again, no way is that a 2014 nike kit, someone is stealing from you again.
Wake up Zombies from your docility and passivity!!

  7. With all due respect mayuka needs a lot of work.never played to expectation. At times he would shoot in goal when he needs to pass. That malama is a big suspct.Janza needs a lot of work,I realy doubt if he can coach.

  8. ZAMBIA HAS QUALIFIED WITH A GAME TO SPARE ! WEDNESDAY WILL JUST BE PAYBACK ! AS FOR THE TEAM , IT COULD BE BETTER , I AGREE ! BUT NOBODY , REPEAT NOBODY , HAS A PERFECT TEAM !

  9. Thanks for winning but don’t cheat yourselves that you can take such display to the Africa cup. Very uncoordinated game from Zambia, no players tormenting the Mozambican defense, just passing quickly prematurely. The basics, the basics, hold the ball, see which player is open, dribble if you can( ever heard or seen a man called messi) control the tide, not just jumping around and running anyhow, hit the ball hard to score, be goal hungry

  10. Oh god!.. some comments, anyway a bunch of miseries i guess. Am pleased with the comeback boys and the fact that they picked up the automatic spot. Thinking of that, Egypt with its glorious record is now hoping for third best placed position to qualify. Come on now peps, sometimes its good to just praise your team for the effort and if they played poor which is a lot of rubbish is not a bother for me because they won the match. They probably will play a lot better on wednesday with the pressure to qualify off their shoulders. I don’t know about the jersey but at least they were not running naked for 90 mins which was a bonus. Cheers boys keep shooting the bullets.

  11. Mweene wasnt at his best but his performance was still one for man of the match as he took command of the 18. The referee did a very good job emulating Diramba and CAF should never ever give him another match. He was a disaster giving plenty wrong decisions especially for invisible handballs. Chipolopolo were far from championship material although they qualified. They put in a very disjointed performance. The commentator explained that Zambia would qualify if they won as head to head would be employed in the case of a tie. Supersport reported we had qualified from Saturday afternoon. VIVA MWEENE! You saved Zambia!

    • Kwena Mweene should be our next president. He is the only one who makes the whole nation happy. We need insansa at present mwebantu. ChachineZambia qualified on Saturday. It’s only the LusakaTimes reporter who thinks we need a point to qualify

  12. talk is cheap, only talk the walk but cant walk the talk…3 points is good enough and we are going to the afcon if we get eliminated in the first round life goes on because no team is sleeping all want the trophy so the best we can do as spectators is to support our team not to be experts in all fields
