Former Defence minister in the MMD Government and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president George Mpombo has endorsed Patriotic Front (PF) candidate Edgar Lungu in the January 20, 2015 presidential election.

Dr Mpombo, who was at the weekend released from Lusaka Central Prison after
being pardoned by Acting President Guy Scott under the presidential amnesty, said that Mr Lungu was the appropriate person to take over the country’s presidency so that he could continue with development projects initiated by the late President Michael Sata.

“As PDP, we have resolved to endorse Edgar Lungu as our preferred candidate in the forthcoming presidential by-election as removing the PF from Government immediately may lead this country into retrograde-gradation,”Dr Mpombo said.

“What we are witnessing today is the PF development agenda which Mr Lungu, who was close to the late President, clearly understands. Hence, he must be given an opportunity to rule the country so that he continues with the developmental programmes for the wellbeing of our people,” Mr Mpombo said.

Dr Mpombo also said his party would soon commence mobilisation of internal party structures in readiness for the 2016 general elections.

“After going through the recent brouhaha, my focus is to mobilise all PDP structures and ensure that we work hard to become a key player in mainstream politics and form Government in 2016,” Mr Mpombo said.

Before the presidential pardon Dr Mpombo was serving a nine-month jail sentence for theft by public servant, forgery and uttering a false document.

    We all know Edgar is winning these elections.HH will never be voted into power and its becoming increasingly clear that Hon Edgar C Lungu is the 6th President of Zambia. Our tribal tactics are not working well. It looks like Zambians just want to vote for ONE EDGAR and this has made our Job very very difficult.
    Meanwhile our Preferred candidate Hakainde Hichelema hasn’t been doing well ever since PF reconciled. We advised him to slow down a bit on his promises but unfortunately, he keeps on promising Zambians unachievable and unattainable promises. As you can see from his recent rally in Chadiza, only little kids came to see him because am sure they mistook him for father christmas.

    • It is a poor campaign strategy to campaign heavily in one’s strong hold. Zambia does not have an electoral college which ascribes weight to certain areas, but has a one man one vote.

      Saying that, if I were PF and was confident that I was popular in NP, I would go there only once to excite the base. But because PF knows it the structures have disintegrated in the North, it is taking Ed there again and again.

      You are just getting a visa to the land of the vanquished! That’s just my opinion.

    • UPND has never been in Government to be rated on tribal basis, PF has been and we have witnessed how tax payers’ money and public resources have been channeled to uplift living standards of a
      particular family forest and clan. National resources are supposed to be distributed on equitable basis to all regardless of tribe.

      How democratic was MCS and his PF? PF was a personal to holder party for MCS and you can see how it has disintegrated following his demise. EL is being imposed to further late MCS’s agenda period, the reconciliation and unity so far demonstrated is artificial it wont hold.

    I remember UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema leading in Internet opinion polls in 2006 beating Michael Sata and Levy Mwanawasa in a distant 2nd and 3rd.
    But the electoral vote and results were markedly different.
    In 2008 Hichilema was also leading in the same opinion polls. But the voter results remained different.

    You somehow feel sorry for EL because it is like a curse when people with dodgy characters keep on endorsing you! EL deserves people of integrity and good standing not convicts!

Mwaanga, Liato, Mpombo, Munkombwe, Katele Kalumba, Chungu are proof enough for the wise to keep away from the ballot. If you are indeed expecting change, then you all need your head examined.

    It is important to harness this group, as a way of rehabilitating them back Into society! Prisoners, where they are allowed to vote, tend to make an honest choice since they are free of election campaigns. For that reason Mpombo has clearly exhibited a clear choice based on ability of the candidate.

  63. This shows that release came with conditions. Mpombo and Masumba were released with a mandate to campaign for PF. Other prisoners were released just as a cover up. Well, I guess it is birds of the same father feathers flock together.

  67. Good morning, good afternoon, good evening foreign bloggers. This is to let you know you support for a certain candidate cannot change my mind on who to vote for. Most, if not all of you are not even voters. I can tell by the flags of the countries where you are currently. Most of you keep changing names to lure the people you call dull to think you are in the majority. One of the two candidates has no pedigree in Luapula, Northern, Muchinga, Copperbelt and Lusaka. You better come back to Zambia and see how it has changed. People are selling freely, that is the ‘more money in our pockets’ that was referred to. But most of you intelligent people know that but you pretend as though someone told you to stuff your pockets with money. We know who is popular.

  71. Zambian Politicians think that by endorsing someone who is potentially likely to win Presidential power puts them on the right side of the political spectrum. Xiever Chungu who is a criminal is right behaving like that and has been for a long time. Katele Kalumba has also been a beneficially of such behaviour. Zambian politicians should try principles as a yardstick. People and the citizenary will take them more seriously.

  72. If Mpombo and Masumba can be released why can’t other petty convicts be released? There are many prisoners who committed lesser offences than the duo who are still in prison. While releasing Mpombo and Masumba may be criticized by others, I think that it must give us a basis upon which to reflect on our justice and correctional system. Perhaps it is time society re-looked at custodial sentence and substituted it with other forms of punishment. Some crimes do not require custodial sentences.

  75. When I read blogs on tribe, I wonder what those bloggers were done or harmed by those particular tribes they abhor with such vigour.

    May be I would suggest that those who have the time to talk about tribe than personalities should give us empirical evidence as to what that particular tribe did or did not do.

    I feel this platform is being under utilised by us spending time writing, reading and replying to issues of tribe instead of progressive ideas or criticisms.

    Can we for once bring out the weakness and strengths of all presidential candidates, and as bloggers weigh who of all the presidential candidates is suitable to take thus forward.

    This issue of tribe (race) is everywhere but those who champion it have never won, and have, and will always be relegated to the dustbins…
