ZESCO puts 660,000 customers on meters

ZESCO 1

A total of 660,000 customers have been connected to the ZESCO prepaid metering system since the project was officially launched in 2006.

ZESCO Spokesperson Henry Kapata disclosed that the figures represent 97 percent of all the ZESCO customers that are on the prepaid metering system across the country.

Mr. Kapata told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that the prepaid metering system has helped the company to reduce confrontations and resolve customer complaints related to billings and metering. He explained that the power utility company connected a total of 60,000 new customers to the national electricity grid last year.

Mr Kapata said the move is in line with government’s desire and commitment to ensure that all Zambians in both urban and rural areas access electricity. He said ZESCO is connecting an average of 200 customers a day throughout the country and has a backlog of 20,000 people on the waiting list.

Mr. Kapata said the trend has put ZESCO under extreme pressure hence the company’s resolve to upgrade its systems and replace old equipment and facilities.

  1. I paid for new installation on 19th September 2014, how long does it take Zesco to connect? Its a pity that Zesco can take this long when in the past responses of such a nature were being dealt within 3 weeks. What happening to the once vibrate institution? I don’t subscribe to answers such as there are no new meter, where is your procurement policy?
