ZDDM warns ‘selfish’ traditional leaders over constititution

Share

The Zambia Direct Democracy Movement (ZDDM) says it is wrong for chiefs to request President Edgar Lungu not to enact the constitution.

ZDDM vice president Charles Kafumbo says some traditional leaders do not want the constitution to be enacted because of the fear to lose jurisdiction over traditional land.

Mr Kafumbo said traditional leaders should not be selfish but instead put the interests of the people before their own.

He said it was unfortunate that chiefs have u-turned when they were part of the consultative meetings at both district and provincial levels over the constitution making process.

Mr Kafumbo said such sentiments are disturbing to the Zambian people who by now should be scrutinising the draft constitution as government earlier promised.

He maintained that the constitution should be passed at the national referendum.

Some traditional leaders have called for the removal of a clause in the draft constitution that they perceive will take away their jurisdiction over traditional land.

  1. Indeed, Tanzania did away with Traditional Leaders why can’t we do the same. In this modern world the way to go is democracy not ancient monarchs which have become ceremonial world wide.

You see now some of these traditional leadership are now claiming to be kingdoms.
The thing is that all this Chiefs who now want to appear very powerful are just greedy for money through selling plots and hindering Govt developmental programmes. KK had no time for them and I think that’s the way we should go

    • Chiefs are out of place in democracies. Even payments given to them are unjustified because noone elected them into office for them to demand payment from taxpayers. Some chiefs like that potential dictator in kwazulu, Zwelithini let the money they beg from govt go to their heads. They then start making undemocratic inhuman decrees such as kill the foreigners

  2. I agree totally, infact these chiefs in my view should just be custodians of traditions cultures and customs of ethnic groupings and not become parallel administrative structures which just cause confusion

Funny thing is that even those tribes that didn’t have paramount chiefs want to have paramount chiefs and for what when now we are moving away from those to democratic institutions

  3. Am not aware of such an NOG with name ZDDM let it join a small clique of NGO’s who have no following or a constituency

  4. Lets agree to disagree. The modern world is digitally operating and require modern solutions, Everything should be modern even the constitution. Traditional leaders ( if any) should operate on the sidelines as modern technology lenders them jobless. Opposing the new constitution (and new technology) is not only ironical but selfcentered. Young vibrant learned generation can tackle upcoming problems better than the old folk stuck in colonial laws . The largest folk nationally is young and fellow learned youth can understand their needs easily. Let these traditional chiefs with all respect accept this revolution and allow the reality to evolve gradually. Do not be left behind in any way as the world is now a global village operating digitally in all aspects.

  5. Though I don’t regard this ZDDM party I wish to add on what they have said; these chieftancy or chiefdoms in Zambia are irrelevant just causing confusions. By the way Zambia has no Kings nor queens. These chiefdoms should be abolished, they retard development.

  6. Don’t be misled,we still chiefs in our country. In europe there is democracy but kings and queens are still relevant there.Failure to develop the country should not be blamed on wrong pipo, the chiefs but politicians who control the budget.

    • Thank you! Some muppets on here have absolutely no clue of what they are talking about. I bet they think Queen Elizabeth was elected too
